Help please-Car not recognizing battery key

    I used to be able to open my car door with my little battery key (if thats what's its called) in my bookbag, right when I went to the car.

    Then I had to get it VERY close to the door and it took several times to open door. Used my reserved battery key that I had at home and it opened 2X immediately but then did the same thing again.


    Now, the KEY sign pops up like I don't have the battery key with me when I try to start the car. Once it starts it runs fine. It acts like it is not recognizing that I have the battery key.

    What's wrong? I only have 35,000 miles on the car. It's a 2006 model.

    You probably need to replace the battery in the FOB. Do a quick search and you can learn how.

    Only other thing to check is that the SKS button under the steering column on the bottom of the dash has not been pushed....but from the description it's a bad battery in the fob.

    It sounds like the battery in the fob, which is easy to replace. Since it worked when you got closer, I suspect the SKS system is still turned on, but if it suddenly stops working completely, check the SKS button under the steering wheel, just as Evan suggested.

    Things you don't think about (at least to me). I was worried it was something much worse but I have had the car 5 yrs. Thank you.


    I don't even know what the SKS button is but I am going to check it out and see if its turned on.

    Is the battery I ask for CR2032 at the store?

    The button is labeled SMART. When sitting in the driver's seat, look above your left knee to find this pushbutton switch.

    Yes, the battery is CR2032 and your local drugstore should carry it.

    Yes, a CR2032. Here is a link for information about replacing your battery. Keep in mind that the Gen III (2010) fob is not the same as the Gen II fob.
