    Hi

Just bought a Prius 1998 NHW10 from ebay. the seller put the ad as it got only a battery problem. So I just loaded in to a truck and bought back without starting the engine. I put a new 12V battery and charged the HV Battery and started the ICE ( Yahoooo!!!!!!!) but the bad thing is its making a heavy thumbing noise from the engine area. I look for it for days and even searched the internet but still no luck. It only comes when I put the selector to P and only sometimes it makes that while driving.

Sometimes when I put to D or R the vehicle is not moving at all. But when ICE is turned off the electric motors works all fine and can drive the car without any problem until HV batteries goes flat ( just unplugged the throttle cable down the airfilter then the engine management light comes!!!! and ICE turns off!!!)

And anyone can please tell me where can I find the filling nut for the transmission oil.

I do my best to get this beauty back in road.

    Regards

I'm guessing this is the NHW10 Japanese grey import Prius and not the NHW11 Prius that was officially imported to the UK/Europe/USA?

I think there are a few members on here with knowledge of this model but I think you might have a job for spare parts. Be nice to see some pics if you have them.

    check ignition coils.

i'll hold off on my answers as i don't own a gen I prius.

i'd recommend against unplugging anything as you did with the throttle cable. if you make your engine fail.. and the car tries to start it up.. you could potentially demolish your hybrid battery.

you mentioned always in P.. and sometimes in D... when while in D... coasting?... heavy acceleration... try to find a correlation between the mfd arrows and your engine. (always during regen.. heavy assist, etc)

    Thanks for the fast replies.

Yes its a gray import imported in 2006 to UK. I posted some Pictures below. As its a import I'm thinking to atten Japanese classes to understand what the car tries to say to me.

Yes making noise when its in P and charging and when idel sometimes it makes the noise and its non when put it to N. when driving its more feels like misfiring. still didnt drove fast (max 50Miles/hr)

I cleaned the Throttle body, Butterfly value, and all the fuel injectors

I checked all the plugs and coils they seems fine the spark is more near white/yellow colour.

Thanks for the advice V8Cobra I still forgot its a hybrid.

There WAS a leak in transmission oil from the transmission oil pan and I closed it today but still I dont know how much oil loose/left in the tranaxel. But I feel its lost some as sometimes the car wont drive at all while its is R or D.

I wish I could get her back in the road ASAP

Thank for your replies guys this is really helpful.

    Regards

Does the car enter READY mode at all? ( Do you see READY on the dash? ) When you say the car will not move at all, do you mean it wont respond to throttle inputs?

If the transaxle is similar to NHW11, then the fill plug is located on the side of the transaxle facing the radiator, and requires a 24 mm socket. The NHW11 transaxle fluid capacity is 5 US quarts of Toyota ATF T-IV.

Yes it comes to ready and I drove it at morning. The engine is bit rough but I managed to go upto 50Miles/hr. Can see the Gen charge the battery and gets power back from the battery when I accelerate.

After couple of miles I stop the car and try to go again it wont move at all I can hear the engine is revving but it want move at all I can hear the gears engaging or something from the Transaxle

After couple of attempts the car moves to front with but so slowly but no reverse at all. I had to push back to line it with the truck as I stopped in very corner of a street.

I parked the car at home and noticed there is a small leak of Trans fluid ( very small like one drop for 20Min time) And managed to find the hole and seal it.

Thank you very much for your kind replies.

BTW I just called the Previews owner and he said it was parked more than 8 months without moving and all he done is start the car on last December only for 20 Min. I really surprised to see the HV batteries are charging at least to start the ICE.

Thanks Guys I found the oil nut ( its more accessiblle from downside and its facing the Rad) and removed the drain and filled up with Mobil ATF 3309 ( Guys @ Toyota said its same as I cant wait till they brings Toyota IV ) Still no good and they said they cant diagnostic it as its an import. Tried with Snap on MT2500 but still getting comm error.

I put the car on ramp and select the gears when I put to R the wheels try to move forward and gives a heavy vibration and when I select D the wheels try to move backward then goes forward feels one motor try to go foreword and the other try to go backward.

Still I didn't gave up I still try to make her going and the good news is the HV battery holds charge.

Will see and thanks for the replies.

You might check out the Yahoo Group, "Mk1_Prius" that specializes in NHW10 Prius. If nothing else, you may identify other NHW10 owners near by who may have some 'lessons learned' to share.

Thanks Bob I already joined that group.

Thinking to sell the car as I think its beyond my repair. Or just break the car and sell as parts but I don't feel like butchering her. I called sombody know about prius and he said there may be a problem with MG1 and MG2 controllers.

    Thanks

I understand that NHW10 uses a non-standard OBD protocol so it's not likely that you'll be able to retrieve DTC. And even if you could retrieve DTC, without NHW10 service docs the codes will be of limited help...

From the little I've seen, the major NHW10 problems include the traction battery and the transaxle. However it's not going to be easy to locate a replacement transaxle. Might be best to get rid of the car if you can do so without taking a big financial loss.

Or pickup up a cheap slightly damaged one from an insurance breakers yard or maybe even ebay and swap over the good body panels and end up with one cheaper good one (or two duds - you takes your chances).

One quick question - the car you bought wasn't the one on ebay about a month ago for around £500?

No Grumpy actually is one of my friend bought from gumtree not from ebay he done the finance part and he mail me the details while sending he wrote ebay instead of gumtree. I happened to know it yesterday. It was in Worcester park - Surrey and I paid £580 for the seller.

With all the effort I still cant make it going I feel bit upset as this is my 1st failed DIY project.

But I fall in love with Prius It had full tank of fuel in it and after all this tests and experiments, the fuel gauge is dropped by only 2 lines. Just compared with my previous car (Jaguar S-Type) its like magic for me.
I heard they do around 50MPG is it true?

Thinking to buy something younger. And made some few calls to some friends in Japan with success. They say we can buy NHW20 for a lot less than here, But need to check with the import rules and a Japanese classes to read what in the screen lol.

Anyway I started the car from 99p and no reserve. I think Its still value for somebody who knows better than me.

    The ebay item
Toyota Prius Hybrid 1.5 No Reserve. Spares or Repair on eBay (end time 26-Jun-10 19:51:12 BST)

Thank you all for the replies I will update with whats happening with Japaneses girl friend

Actually better as most of our gallons are a little smaller (yankee gallons!)

I have a 2003 Prius, the 1.5L NHW11 that followed the NHW10 and my mileage shown below is for +70,000 miles.

We also have the latest, the ZVW30 Prius with the 1.8L and it is getting pretty much the same mileage after 12,000 miles. However, it does it about 5 mph faster, with air conditioning (Alabama is pretty warm this time of year), significantly more space and comfort. For example, I carried a 12 ft. ladder in the ZVW30 with the rear hatch closed.

    Oh yes, easily.

My mpg's are quite low at 48mpg as I work my car hard 10 hours a day in heavy traffic. On the open road you'll get 50-55 mpg with ease and upto 65 mpg if you take it easy. If you try a little harder you can get more.

They're a great car and fun to drive. Not sure what your budget restrictions are but what about a UK 1st gen 2000-2003? They cost a little more than a grey import but are supported by Toyota UK and might be a little easier to fix/look after.

I've heard the London Congestion Charge might be changed so that only cars (hybrid or otherwise) that emit 100g/km will be exempt but everything over this limit will have to pay the daily charge - including hybrids that had previously been ok. If this does happen then expect to see a drop in the values of older hybrids.

Its really surprising when I compared with my previous car ( Jaguar S type 4.0 V8) that only gives me 16-17MPG. ( Please don't ask I know its stupid but everyone made mistakes lol ) I simply cant afford to drive it around .

I thinking to go for a Prius and its the 1st car in my list. As soon as my Jag sold ( she had a accident and still repairing)

Yes its a good idea as I called my insurance ( Co-op) and they said they cant cover gray imports and The best part I would be able to read what is in the screen and My OBD reader will understand what the car says.

Anyway how is the prius performance on Motorways. Sorry for asking all of this. Hope you can understand why. This is the first time I'm used this kind of a car and I didn't had to taste it fully.

    Thanks for all your replies....

The 1.5L NHW11 (2001-03) Prius is not terribly fast, 13 seconds to 60 mph. On the highway, up to 65 mph (104 km/h) returns 52 MPG sunrise to sunset. At 70 mph (112 km/h) is falls to 49 MPG and 75 mph (120 km/h) brings it down to 39 MPG. The good news is 100 mph (160 km/h) it gives 23 MPG but it is rough on the car. It really does best cruising at 65 mph.

The 1.5L NHW20 (2004-09) Prius does a little better but mostly with more space and utility. But the 1.8L ZVW30 (current) Prius is much nicer.

It does everything the the 1.5L Prius do but 5 mph faster. I haven't measure fuel consumption at 100 mph, yet.

:eek:You seem to have both of the hybrid warning lights "ON" for the electrical side and the petrol engine side of things, on the MFD. This is showing that you have issues with probably both the main battery and the ICE, just because the main battery is "holding a charge" dose not meen that it is evenly balanced. Being out of balance and needing an "Eqilization charge" is part of the servicing issues of these NHW10 prius cars, If it was sat around for any length of time, then yes it will definetly need an EQ charge to enable the battery to use any held charge level. This situation usually acures as a result of total neglect.
:) I have sorted out many of these NHW10 prius cars now, with just these sort of issues. including full diagnostics, EQ charging and servicing. I have never fount it to end up being a machanical issue ever.
