I have a 2010 package IV with the standard 15" wheels just like 90% of the rest of you. I have issue with the fact that the speedometer is between 2 and 3 miles per hour off (fast). I am considering going to a wider and taller tire to correct this. I wanted to hear other's opinions on this because I don't want to do this and learn the pitfalls on the way home. I am concerned about clearance. I don't know if the tires will rub on turns or with four people in the car. I also would like to get the most fuel efficient tire to counteract the wider foot print so my mileage won't suffer to badly. I have always had good luck with Michelins but you have to watch the specs on the number of miles the tire will last. I have looked for other threads on this but I found most of the experimenting was on Gen IIs. I included a comparison chart below to show the differences between the two. Thanks for any feedback you can give I do take the responses seriously.

Another consideration is the odometer, my speedometer is off by the normal 2% or 3% but my odometer is much closer. If I increased tire size to correct speedometer error the odometer would be inaccurate. Of course that might not be to bad, it would indicate fewer miles that I actually traveled.

You might have clearance problems with a 225/60-15, I don't know if anyone has tried that size yet. I think one poster has gone to 225/45-17 but I cant find the topic right now. a more conservative approach would be a 205 or 215/65-15. Of course going to 16 or 17 inch wheels would give you more choices. A 215/50-17, for example, would probably fit OK and has about 816 revs/mile.

A wheel and tire of a different size might result in a more inaccurate speedometer reading. If speed accuracy is your concern, a gps navigator will give you a more accurate speed reading that is indifferent to tire size.

I have aftermarket 205/50-17's and speedometer reads the same or 1mph bellow my gps, my odometer reads 1.5% less than gps. I wonder how these things are calibrated at the factory?

I think your choice, 205/50-17, is a good size for the Gen3 Prius. I checked a couple of different brands in that size at Tire Rack and they seem to be around 828 revs per mile. I'll probably stick with the 215/45-17 size that was standard on my car though. I automatically correct for the speedometer error, my previous car had the same error, if I corrected it I would have to retrain myself, that might be difficult. :)
