Great news. Looks like the earlier reports of the PHEV Prius being quite a bit slower may not be true. As for the reported poorer braking, seems like Toyota could make a last minute fix and upgrade the brakes on the final production vehicle.

As for the $4000 price premium, is this the first time we've heard of a price for the PHEV Prius? Not sure if this includes the tax rebate? Of course, still not firm release date.

then the critics are going go "so there's a hybrid premium and a PHV premium! omg you're gonna take 200 years to pay it back!!)

In pure EV mode, no ICE assist, 0-60 takes 23.4 sec. Too slow for freeway driving, only suit for city only.

    You nailed it.

Can anyone explain where that kind of response comes from? It's not like you're asking them to pay for your car or anything. This is your own money that you choose to spend in this way. Why do these non-purchasers complain that the car they didn't buy is too expensive?

$5/gal gas will clear that up.

Actually, the EV in the plug-in allows for more aggressive acceleration.

Of course, the point isn't to remain in EV anyway. The purpose is to use the engine less, not eliminate it entirely.

If these numbers are correct then I would say too slow to get on the freeway, but once you are at steady speeds EV will work fine.

That doesn't actually apply in real-world situations. You'd have to work really hard to prevent the engine from automatically starting. Intentionally defeating a behavior like that is what hypermilers do, not normal drivers.

Well, when i drive now i EV up to 30, pulse the petrol up to 60, then drop back to electric. with the PHEV, you could EV up to about 40, petrol pulse up to 55, then EV up to 60.

If you need to, just floor it and you'll still get to 60 in 11 seconds.

That's the aftermarket upgrade behavior, not PHV from Toyota itself.

We've seen video of test PHV drives where oridinary acceleration exceeded the usual threshold due to that version of the PSD configuration specifically allowing higher tolerances.

because under some strange logic, their justification for their vehicle can be intangible yet for us, it has to be tangible...

And why would you ever do that? Use the engine to accelerate then use the battery to sustain

Are you sure? it might just bring it down to 100 years :D

I guess for those that DON'T drive 55mph in the slow lane, that might be important. I guess for some, 23 seconds is important too.

I have two eye witnesses* that the PHV can accelerate uphill onto a freeway and outpace a Mustang attempting to overtake said PHV before the merge. In fact, the acceleration was so pronounced that I eased up out of fear that the wheels were going to come out from under me on the turn.

    Whoever says that it's 0 - 60 in 23 seconds wasn't trying very hard.

That is with both ICE and MG1 running in full power, not EV mode.
My point is most of the PHEV owners want to drive in EV mode only for the first 14 miles without using a single drop of gas.
If you need to use ICE to accelerate to highway speed, then you are really running the PHEV in hybrid mode, why a PHEV.

That's quite an assumption and a contradiction to what Toyota has suggested.

Think about the restricted zone in London. Using up that EV capacity prior to arriving there would reduce/defeat the benefit.

    .
The point is not to eliminate the use of gas.

    It's to significantly BOOST efficiency.
