I have managed to crack open my smart key only to find the battery is encased in a black plastic frame which seems to be permanently attached to the case. How do I remove the battery from this frame without breaking it?

There are 4 very tiny screws to remove...and it opens fine.

Opps, you said smart key and I was thinking fob. For the FOB, I use my thumb to press on the battery at the narrow end of fob. There are three, small, plastic bits that help to hold the coin cell centered in the holder. One end towards the center pops out, replace the cell with a new one (Radio Shack or others), and the problem is solved.

Now I'm wondering if replacing the smart key battery requires reprogramming the Prius to recognize the key?
