Anyway to get the car to charge the traction battery idling?

    That also adds 100lbs of deadweight and more stuff to deal with, not worth it. Also revving with brakes on sounds harsh to the transmission

    Agree with the 100lbs of deadweight. However, the Prius doesn't have a transmission per se. It has the PSD (power split device).

    When you are doing a force-charge (revving with brakes on), MG2 (the outer-ring with the electric motor attached to the wheels) is not spinning at all. The ICE is driving the planetary ring and causing MG1 (the Sun gear) to spin and generate electricity to charge the battery. The only danger here is if the ICE were to drive MG1 faster than its design limits...something the ECU will not allow.

    Wouldnt the PSD wear out faster?

    All usage results in wear of some sort. Wear from Force charging is probably not significant over the lifetime of the vehicle.

    The reason NOT to do Force charging is that it is a waste of gasoline.
