I know the bladder size is variable, but I would think in SoCal/warm weather, it should have the ability to expand to its full 11.9 G capacity. However, when I am down to 1 bar and I fill up, I can only get in 7.8 G. Somewhere, there is another 4 G of capacity that I am not getting to use. Could the bladder be permanently constricted? Is there a way to check this or fix it?

    Thanks,
    Dave

It could be that the fuel system inclination sensors need adjustment.

For info on this, and lots of other gory details of your "fuel and evap
system," see page 3-2 in this document.

The full capacity of the tank is not 11.9 gallons. The gross capacity is 11.9 gallons. From that you subtract unusable fuel at the bottom of the tank and volume consumed by the bladder. The usable capacity is somewhere around 10 to 11 gallons.

If that's true I cut it wayyyy to close today as I added 11.05 gallons at the fill up. I think maybe once that blinking begins I need to get over and into the next station available. I drove an extra 10 miles or so thinking for sure I had to have that much left. I made it but according to this comment ...not by much. What is "volume consumed by the bladder" beyond what is unusable

I have gone as much as 30 miles blinking, I have run out after blinking for 7 miles, the bladder adds excitement to your life. These days I fill up after 400 miles.

    The 2010 has no bladder.

I have an '08 as well and drove about 10 miles while blinking the other day. I was pushing my luck but in a very gas station rich environment. I added 11.052 gallons of gas at fill up. That is as close as I want to get ....period. I think I might not wait for the blinking as it is scary. I was proud of my 482 miles driven but feel it isn't worth the fear. I was hoping to get over the 500 mile hump but I don't see it happening or risking it. My area is very hill heavy so I don't have the throttle control to continually adjust well as of yet. Honestly I think I'm about where I'll be and I'm pretty happy with it. I did my commute to and from work today and managed a 43 mile drive at 51.6mpg according to MFD. I just don't see how some people get the numbers they claim. One guys cites 25 tanks over 700 miles and 1 tank over 1000. Maybe flat highway at steady speeds? Crazy numbers. At any rate I am proud of the pic I'm posting as I started a couple weeks ago averaging only 41mpg! A few tips here and boom ...better. The bladder though surely makes me wary now of pushing it to the blinking light. I am surprised that there isn't a little more warning than a 7 mile blink in some cases.

    7 mi??

    That's a cautionary tale.

I've always assumed I had 25 mi or so!

I once got 550 mi, but usually fill up before 500 for fear of the bladder.

There are threads around here with lots of accounts of running out of gas - I guess it isn't the end of the world after all...........

It's ok Jimbo I do that on occasion as well. I am hoping as dabize says ..."7 miles is a cautionary tale"....I would like to get 500 miles a tank but sure don't want to push my luck and walk in 100 degree heat all so I can say "I made it 500 miles"....especially if the last 2 miles are on foot :)
