Why do I like music that's older than I am?

I was born in 1976 and yet I love the Beatles. I also like many other music from the 60's (motown) and 70's. I feel the 80's was rich with very nice music. Then it all kinda went downhill from there...

If this track doesn't make your toes twitch you're not human.

By the way I also love Betamax, tube amps and Apple IIs

    It's because you're getting old mate :)

All modern music is processed, all sounds the same, doesn't have that originality etc? Sounds like what my dad said to me when I was young.

    You're right though.

I sometimes cannot believe the noise set to a drum machine that some of my students listen to. They think it's amazing.

Because there has been almost zero GOOD new "pop" music since ~1973, Springsteen, Mark Knophler and Eddie Vedder and perhaps a few others excepted!

Music (pop music in particular)needs to have some social significance to be relevant and to have an impact. The 60's (and the music from the 60's) were a time of great social upheaval, and the music reflected it. Compare that to the music of the 50's or the 80's?

So true. MTV is also turning into porno. If I ever have kids I certainly won't allow them to watch videos from the likes of Gaga only to mention one. I'm no prude, but what's with all the booty and sex in the music videos??

People have ALWAYS complained about Pop Music. Let's take the Wayback Machine to 1969.

That was the year that gave us "Something" and "Come Together" by the Beatles. "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Gimmie Shelter" by the Stones. "Space Oddity", "Whole Lotta Love", "The Boxer", "Pinball Wizard", I could go on for hours like this.

And the number one selling song of the year? "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies.

Sorry, but the Eagles were a mere shadow of their former band lives/evolution. Buffalo Springfield, Byrds, Burrito Bros etc.

As for MTV. I have NEVER watched a music video! I think it destroys the whole image of the music. No only that, they are boring!

Exactly. Even my kids know that. Dad's old tunes are still cool. And we've traded - some of my favourites are much younger than I am. :)

Can't disagree. Try listening to Duane Allman and Dicky Betts on the original version of "Revival" for great ensemble guitar work. (In memory of Elizabeth Reed" is another one as well.

I like Mozart, and he is a lot older than me. Beethoven is pretty good too. Stravinsky, Schubert; there are a lot of good composers a lot older than me.

Think about this logically and you will see the answer to your question. When you go back in time you get to cherry pick from the very best. If you listen to only new music, you get everything that is currently out there. Only a few will stand the test of time. Time is a filter that eliminates most of the crap.

While I agree that there is a dirth of good music being made these days..it's not a total absence..
Nickleback is a tad pop for my tast, but it is still excellent modern rock
Linkin Park does some amazing things and may well be reflected upon as the link b/w old and new in the realm of Rock and Roll. They blend hard rock, rap, blues and their own flavor. If you haven't given them a fair listen but consider yourself a fan of classic rock--give them a go.
The Tragicly Hip are also interesting (though I don't know if they're still making music) and represent a new but honest direction for rock.

And my favorite history of rock chart:

Of course we have to differentiate between "mainstream Pop" and artists on the fringe. Occasionally cross. Carlos Santana has always been a bit on the fringe, but his grammy winning brought him briefly into the mainstream for example.

Get a little further from the mainstream and there is some quality out there. Casually, I have heard John Ledgend, Robert Rudolph play do some interesting stuff. I could probably come up with a few others that are on my I pod, but not very many.
