Add another to the line of overpriced Honda hybrids. They are capable of better.

A hybrid that only gets EPA 35/37 ? Seriously???

Gasoline is at $3.19 here in SoCal right now. Consumers looking to move away from gas guzzlers are going to want the 40mpg that Ford's non-hybrid Fiesta and Focus offer. Seriously, what is Honda thinking ??? (they AT LEAST need to match Ford's non-hybrid 40mpg!!!)

I just read the AW-AutoWeek review, "Hybrid Hopes CR-Z looks and--kinda, sorta--drives like a CRX" by Mark Vaughn. Their summary was 'not really all that sporty' and 'not really all that hybrid efficient.' I'm just passing on a summary.

Before you denounce the CR-Z's fuel economy, please keep in mind the Honda Insight is only rated for 40/43 but every review i have read gets up to 50mpg or more.

Really? You sure you aren't confusing it w/the discontinued 2 seater 1st gen Insight? I haven't seen any reviews (not random people just posting claims on message boards) of the 2nd gen Insight getting 50+ mpg. Please point us to these "every review".

I would recommend collecting the 2010 Honda Insight user records and 2010 Prius user records from: Fuel Economy

I just reanalyzed the Honda Insight and 2010 Prius records and got:

    • 49.4 MPG(*) - 2010 Prius (93 records)
    • 48.3 MPG(*) - 2010 Insight (29 records)

NOTE: The Insight remains too small for our family.

I personally think the Insight is a very good car for the price! No, it's not as advanced or efficient as the Prius, but still not deserving of all the disrespect heaped upon it here! The CR-Z is another story, since it has both mediocre mileage for a hybrid, and poor performance for a sporty car!

Are you saying its impossible to get 50+mpg on an Insight?

To tell you the truth i don't have the time to look for those reviews nor do i care... There are plenty of user and publication reviews stating 50mpg or higher.

All of those insight/prius comparisons you posted has the Insight within striking distance of the Priuses fuel economy. And the Insight costs $3000 less.

*edit* To make things easier for me, bwilson4web was kind enough to post stats from Fuel Economy showing an average of 48.3mpg with (obviously) some user reviews at higher than 50mpg.

I would have to agree with you that the CR-Z is a bit disappointing from a performance standpoint. However as i stated before, we should wait until we have real world feedback before we say the mileage on the CR-V is "mediocre".

    EPA estimates 41mpg combined
    fueleconomy.gov 29 user reviews 48.3mpg combined

No, I didn't say it was impossible. I wanted you to point me to these reviews where you claim:
    Here's two more for you:
    http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/reviews/reliability-report/4348444 - Fuel economy: Average—40.1 mpg; Worst—33.8 mpg; Best—47.1 mpg, after a year
http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/oneyear/1008_2010_honda_insight_update_5/index.html - 38.5 mpg. Looks like their car entered their long term fleet ~Sep or Aug 09.

Your price comparisons are for a a very stripped down Insight (LX) that doesn't even have cruise control or a center console. Toyota did a cost analysis at Hybrid Cost Analysis - Newsroom : Our Point of View Post / Toyota awhile back, but unfortunately (?), Prius I is available to fleets only. However, yes, nav equipped Insights are much cheaper than nav equipped Priuses.

No, thanks, I'm not in the market for a new car, but I'd have little reason to buy an Insight. Strangely enough, it has won some reviews against the 2010 Prius, but some comparisons/reviews have turned out like these:
Honda Insight versus Toyota Prius: There's No Comparison | Car News Blog at Motor Trend
Review: 2010 Honda Insight Take Two | The Truth About Cars
http://pressroom.consumerreports.or...or-its-ride-handling-noise-and-rear-seat.html where it scored too low to recommend

I think some of the reasons cited by the the above and other reviews, are why the Prius is outselling the Insight 7:1 in the US, despite the Prius being generally more expensive. (http://pressroom.toyota.com/pr/tms/document/June_Sales_Chart.pdf vs American Honda Reports June 2010 Sales Increase of 6.2 Percent)

OK can we go back on topic here?

I never did say the Insight is a better car, i prefer the Prius despite the fact that i am "traditionally" a Honda guy having owned a CBR600RR, S2000, Civic SI, CR-V, Accord, etc... and not a single Toyota... yet.

What i am merely saying is that reviews that i have read shows the Insight with an average of over 50mpg.

IMHO i would much rather follow a user review rather than a publications review since almost all publications test performance of the vehicle and push the vehicle much harder than most hybrid drivers thus lowering the fuel economy. User reviews such as those on fueleconomy.gov shows a more realistic fuel economy based on a persons everyday driving scenario.

This review shows 65mpg driving green with no a/c and 29mpg driving WOT both over a 3 mile course. First test driving with no a/c is somewhat achievable by most hybrid drivers, factor in a/c and i don't see a very significant drop from that baseline. 29mpg WOT for three miles really isn't bad but realistically most drivers here on PC wouldn't drive their hybrid anywhere near that manner. The Motor Trend editor also did a 20 mile test getting 64mpg, although he did not mention if a/c was on or not.

I'm done with this debate as it has already gone off topic far enough and you keep pushing the topic further off topic by posting things irrelevant to our discussion of MPG.

P.S. This is a forum on the WORLD wide web not just continental lower 49 states... and yes the Prius I is available to the public from other distributorships outside of Toyota Motor Sales, USA.

Well I averaged 50mpg on a test drive that I did on the Insight last year (A/C off, 8c outside temps) while I averaged 49mpg on the Prius that I test drove later in the summer on the same route (test drove both from the same automall to minimise variables). The weather was warmer though and I did use the A/C)

Looking over the specs I see the CR-Z weighs the same as the Insight, despite being a far smaller 2 seater. That, plus 24 measly hp more would explain the lackluster performance and mileage. C'mon Honda, are you even trying anymore?:(

It looks like it could be a fun car for autoX or curvy roads. The IMA could give it the torque it needs to make quick exits out of tight corners. There will probably be suspension / chassis upgrades.
