Last night at about 9:30p.m. I was driving on a country road and all the sudden, a deer came running out in front of me! Now they say to just go ahead and hit the deer, but naturally, I swerved and the car went one way, then when it came back the rear of the car swung around into a ditch. I was going about 50mph or so, and all I remember seeing was a lot of dirt and dust when the car was skidding sideways then BOOM, I felt my body shift its weight and before I knew it, I seen the windshield cracking from the top due it hitting the ground. Then when the car was at rest, I was hanging upside down in the complete dark and the only light was the MFD and the speedometer. I sat there for about three seconds before taking off my seat belt and falling to the roof, and trying to find a window to crawl out of. Luckily, I escaped without any broken bones and no scratches at all. I am very impressed with the Gen. I prius, it performed a lot better then what I thought and kept me out of harms way.

Glad to hear that you faired better than the Prius. Though I'm sad to hear about the loss of another Prius.

I rolled a Nissan Maxima under the same conditions. I was told that insurance would have paid out if I'd hit the deer before rolling the car. Like you, I ended up hanging from the seat belt. Unlike you, I slid into a tree which pushed a large amount of the driver's window into my shoulder.

It's easier to understand when you're older (I can't believe I'm old) but it really is just a car. Count your blessings and move on.

that's a bummer, glad you're o.k.! we live on a country road with lots of deer. the speed limit is 40 but i try to keep it 30-35 after dark because it happens all the time. people behind me don't appreciate it tho, senseless, i guess.:)

That is what a car should do in an accident . . . save the owner from harm. Looking at the car, the frame is rubbish. However, the rest of the parts should find a good home in another Prius.

    Interesting, no air bag deployment.

    Thanks for the photos,

Oh, you poor thing! Oh, your poor Prius!

Don't be terribly surprised if you have nightmares, weird emotional reactions, or feel funny for a few days or weeks. Are you sure you're okay? Did you get checked out at all? You might get really sore in a day or two... as muscles swell from bruising. Take it easy on yourself.

    Awe, Hi Rae Vynn! :)
I did have one nightmare last night, but hopefully those will stop. Yeah, I do kinda have those moments where I have a flashback, like i'll be sitting there and i'll start to see the sky when I was rolling and the feeling of hanging upside down in the car in the darkness. Surprisingly, I'm not sore at all, only my neck was today, and everything else is as good as new. And I will, and you take care! <3

Exactly, the car did very good in this crash. It did a good job. :) And I'm already looking at used Gen. I's.

You might want to track what happens to the old car and possibly . . . save some parts:

undamaged wheel rim - makes a nice start for a full-size spare in the next (I have mine but they run about $100)
traction battery - heavy to get out but nice to have (or sell . . . say to Oakland CA?)
inverter - tedious but another part nice to have handy (or sell)
accelerator pedal - some go bad so having one that was OK, is OK (I'd like the connector and pig-tail)
ECUs - behind the glove box is a steering and engine ECU, under the passenger floor mat, the HV ECU (along with pig-tail connectors)
unbroken light assemblies - also nice

If you pull any of the ECUs, send me a PM and we can do a deal. I'm especially interested in the HV ECU. Also, inverter pig-tails (where the cable for the connectors is hacked off leaving a wire 'pig tail' for other circuits.) Accelerator 'pig-tail' too, I'm interested.

They say you should hit the deer but you swerved.

    Why can't we just brake?!?

It was a reaction, I brakes and swerved, thus causing the car to loose control.

Damn bro, always good to walk away from a rollover unscathed. I smell a part out in your near future.

How close to max sidewall was your tp?

Put some money aside for driving lessons. Look for the AAA classes in your area.

I've hit deer before... and I have heard of too many people dying from hitting deer.

Just hitting the deer is not always the best thing. Deer are like brick walls, and I'd more than likely swerve, taking my chances with a ditch rather than hitting a deer.

Any wreck you walk away from was a good wreck. :thumb:

Glad to hear you're OK. Car/deer collisions in Michigan are very common and there is a saying that the state uses - "Don't veer for deer". I can understand the reaction though to swerve when there isn't time for thought, but I'd take a 100 some pound deer over a tree, culvert, or oncoming car any day.

Glad the OP survived his accident without physical harm. If that had happened in a car from the 60's or earlier there's a reasonable chance the roof would have collapsed and the OP would not have survived. Some recent SUVs that rollover have been deathtraps i.e., older Ford Explorers.

As mentioned earlier if the OP had hit the deer there's some possibility that the top-heavy deer would have hit the windshield with adverse consequences for the OP.

Hopefully the OP will take to heart the advice to moderate his speed in areas where deer or other potential obstacles are known to be present, especially at night when forward and side visibility is limited.

Here's one source indicating that rollovers account for only 3% of accidents, but 1/3 of fatalities.

lol, why? If you ask any one on here thats ever rode with me, they'll tell you that I'm a really good driver. If you ask me, even though the car was a total loss, I'm glad the way things went because I was not hurt. What if I did hit the deer, then wreck and flip? I'd be hurt from possibly the Airbag, impact, ect. Not only that, but you don't need to be a negative Nancy lol. The road was very slick anyway due to the tar and oil from that hot summer day and when I swerved to go around, the car fish tailed and did its thing.

    I know! I've herd of people hitting them too and the deer goes through the windshield and kills them. Its really sad...I think that even if I didn't swerve, that after that deer was hit, judging from its size, I would have just caused more impact, and then some. I'm just so glad the car kept me safe, and Brad (the passenger.) So like you said, it was a good wreck! (;
