I have a new Prius V with ATP and I've got 3 questions:

    1) What are the little red lines / markers that appear in my rear view camera when I back up? Are they supposed to indicate something about my bumper?

    2) Is it possible to start the car with only the mechanical key in a dire situation when my battery is dead in the Smart Key? I don't see a keyhole for starting the car.

    3) Should my car beep faster as I can closer to something when backing up? Or can I only tell distance with my eyes and the camera image?

    Thanks!

    1. I don't know the answer to your first question.
    2. You cannot start the car with the mechanical key.
    3. The beep is constant and only indicates that the transmission is in reverse. It has no distance sensors in the bumpers, such as on a BMW with parking distance control.
Best wishes with your really neat car.

    1) the red lines are part of the alignment markers for the intelligent parking assist.
lookup up the parking assist in the manual for Toyota's explanation.

    2) the mechanical key is only used to open the door. if the battery goes dead in
the smart key, I believe the Prius still recognizes the smart key if you hold the
smart key directly in contact with the Power button.

    3) I've never noticed my 2010 V with ATP beep faster going in reverse so you'll need to use your backup camera.

    1. They're used for alignment purposes. The T-shaped markers should line up with the edge of the bumper so that you know the camera is properly aimed

    2. Yes. The keyhole is found only on the driver's side. Once you're in, place the fob by the POWER button and then start the car within a few seconds (I forget the exact seconds you have to start the car after placing the fob near the POWER button)

    3. Not unless your dealer installed reverse parking sensors. The Prius does not come with reverse parking sensors (aka sonar sensors, aka back-up sensors) from the factory.

    1. If you've just shifted into reverse, the arrow and lines should line up with the edge of your bumper. If they don't, the Intelligent Parking Assist might not work correctly (the lines indicating your parking spot won't be in the right place). With IPA engaged, there are also red lines to show where the car will be parked.

    2. Answered - just hold the Toyota emblem side of the fob to the power button while depressing the brake pedal, then press the power button. The mechanical key is only for unlocking the door.

    3. No, the beep is only to indicate that you are in reverse. Many people choose to have this beep deactivated by the dealer; see other threads for many other customizable options.

    4. Not asked, but why yes, you CAN find all this (and much more) useful information in your manuals. #1 is on page 198 of the Nav manual, #2 is on page 542 of the Prius owner's manual, and #3 is on page 175 of the owner's manual (and customization of it is listed on page 592). Everybody here will recommend reading it thoroughly (multiple times!) because it contains answers to questions you haven't even thought of. You just paid a lot of money for a fancy car - you might as well not let any of its nifty features go to waste by not knowing about them!

Is this available? I asked my dealer about sonar and was told there is no such accessory.

I'm not sure if it's available in your region. They're not available in Canada (although Toyota Canada does offer "Park Pilot" sensors on other models) but there are 3rd party manufacturers that offer parking sensors for most vehicles in both black and body-colour sensors.

Imagine that--a manual provided to owners, which details all the features and options of their cars. If only more people read it, fewer would waste bandwidth here... :D
