I was going to post on the "Imagine a 55 mph speed limit thread, but this doesn't fit. Has anyone noticed the huge disparity in Satnav estimates of travel time on minor roads compared to highways?

Driving to Sandusky, OH, from Marietta, OH, a couple of weeks ago, I took Route 250 instead of the recommended I 70 and Ohio Pike, accepting an apparent penalty about an hour. The route takes you through attractive country on roads not exceeding 55 mph and through several small towns. We arrived nearly an hour ahead of estimate.

The return was even quicker though speed hardly ever exceeded 60. The surprise was when we stopped for a fill-up (of ourselves) at a Subway. When I was getting out of the car, a motorist beside us asked whether the Prius really averages 50 mpg. As I hadn't been paying attention to mpg I turned Power on and pointed to the screen. To my surprise the average over the previous 140 miles had not been 50. It was 61.

Moral: double check the Satnav estimates. Minor roads can save both time and gas.

At least in the Gen II, you can adjust how fast you expect to go on 3 types of roads. This helps the estimates. (I am at work on a company computer, so I do not have page numbers for where this is in the manuals)

For the Gen III speed settings, go to Setup -> Navi -> Detailed Navi Settings -> Driving Speeds. It gives you options to set up Residential, Main Streets and Freeway speeds. The closer you are to your average driving speeds, I would suspect that the estimated time will be closer to your actual.
