I'm sure they'll get right on it as soon as they finish breathlessly reporting the exoneration of the "climategate" scientists. Yup, that's our left-wing, liberal media bringing the truth to the people.

Never DID take our '04 in to have the pedal chopped. I guess that means we got a clasic.

To give them their just desserts the WSJ had this on its site 3 days ago. The D3 faithful however are going nuts, Hello Malorn is that you :D?
    "BS"
"They're lyin because Toyota paid them off"
"I still think it's the electronics. I don't believe this new data."

    I don't think it's 100% driver error, but probably a vast majority.

I keep thinking about that CHP officer and his family that died in San Diego. Somehow I don't think he had his foot on the accelerator all that time.

The final findings from the SD Sheriff's Dept and the NHTSA is that it was the wrong mats - improperly insalled - that trapped the pedal. This was published last November.

    Hmmm.
I always thought the WSJ WAS the mainstream media (indeed, the creator of the mainstream US financial media).
And the reason you have this news is that a reporter took the time to go to the source and hack through the incidents.
And NPR (sometimes considered the standardbearer of the liberal mainstream media) jumped right on it, even if they didn't do their own investigating.

My point, in defending the alleged mainstream media is essentially that you can't get random unpaid bloggers to do this sort of investigation on a regular or a systematic basis.

Yes that's an extremely sad case. The vehicle should definitely have a brake override function (don't know why they wouldn't, i'd imagine throttle + brake is pretty bad for an autobox) and obviously the dealer was negligent for installing two sets of mats and not informing the customer how to operate the vehicle correctly. sadly i think there's a large amount of blame which can be apportioned to the driver as well. Would you drive a car you didn't know how to operate properly? i wouldn't.

Of course the media won't report this with as much vigor...or barely at all. Not as captivating to run a headline of teaser that say's " Toyota Cars as Safe as They Have Always Been".

More likely: "NTSA finds Toyota cars no safer than before." Or perhaps: "Still no improvement in Toyota Safety!"

So what happened to that guy driving near San Diego (?) claiming the prius accelerated out of control? Did they find his story to be a fake?

I had my gas pedal shaved, nothings changed. same reliable car.

All non-hybrid Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks are having the firmware "flashed" to include the brake override function (I'm told).
All Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles have always had brake override.

I think we can mostly agree the fellow in San Diego was doing it purposefully, for some purpose. I'll let the reader imagine what that purpose was, based on the record he had up to then.

This gets back to how sad it is that the NHTSA engineers had to leak this- the formal report will probably look just like this. NHTSA's administrator is not neutral here. He's also "Mr. Bell the Hybrid" lying flat-out about the results of NHTSA's study on that (yes there are more incidents, but the data is insufficient to be a valid study, per the scientists).

Flashing the existing computer, or at least one of them, to provide brake override will prove to be useless if in the end it turns out to be a firmware fault that results in SUA.

WHAT acceleration? WHERE? I can tell you 100% there's been no cases reported in the UK. To me it seems like a lot of people can't drive properly, and rather than suck it up and admit it when they heard some story about a floormat and some slimy (proabably that nutjob on fox) "journalist" asked "what's REALLY going on??? is is AL QAEDA?!?!?" and then these morons jumped on the bandwagon.

You know what happened to me the other night? approaching a roundabout at a slow speed, i saw a gap and applied a bit more throttle. i started to slow down. oh dear, i realised, my foot is on the brake, not the throttle. i moved it to the correct pedal and everything was fine. Now, is this Toyota's fault for somehow not telling me what pedal my foot was on? of course not, it's 100% my fault.
