Hey folks! I've been lurking for a few weeks, and I broke down and finally bought a Prius yesterday after 5 years of yearning. I tried to do as much research as possible, but I guess with the Prius, it's never enough. I was under the impression that the Smart key was standard, but I found out by many google searches that you can have the keyfob with a black Toyota logo which is a dumb key, or the silver logo which is the smart key. I noticed I have the "Key" toggle switch under the steering wheel in my 2008 Prius. Does this mean it supports Smart keys? I guess my salesperson didn't know about it, because I told him (incorrectly) that all keys were smart, and he agreed and ordered one for me.

So.. can I use a Smart key or not? Thanks for your help :)

By "key toggle switch", do you mean the SKS enable button under the steering wheel? If you have that your Prius is an SKS model.

All it says is "Key" below it.

That's the button to enable/disable the SKS functions. With the button in the out position, the SmartKey is enabled.

Yes, your 2008 is equipped with Smart Entry / Smart Start and the fob with the silver Toyota emblem is the correct one to order.

If you bought from a Certified Pre Owned delaer, I hope you get your new smart key for free. Youre always supposed to get the 2 original keys from them.

I made sure it was added to the "We owe" form, but only one was added, and I believe he only put "1 key" down. I'm not sure how shady dealers are with contracts, but I guess we will see.

Does your Prius have little black buttons on the exterior driver and front passenger door handles as well as the hatch trim above the license plate?

there is really just one easy way to see if you have a smart key: try and start the car with the key in your pocket. if it starts, you have a smart key. if it doesn't, you don't.

The black buttons on the drivers door handle to lock all the doors, if you have that? you have a smart key. if there aren't any buttons, then you don't. Many gen II priuses have it as dealers generally ordered them with the smart keys, but some of the cheaper ones don't i guess, since it wasn't standard.

If you bought the car from a toyota dealer, the salesman should know if the car has a smart key or not. If he doesn't, then he's a moron and i don't know why you are seriously giving him money for knowing squat about the car. If you're buying from an independent dealer, this is understandable if he doesn't know, but still laughable.

No buttons on the door handles...no smart key...
