Tony got first dibs and posted his experience Here an Here, last week. But on Monday I get my chance to enjoy the PHV Prius for a week!

I don't anticipate anything quite as elaborate as Tony's Blog, or even a lot of experimenting. I hope to drive it just as I do with my current Prius--hypermiling on my usual commute. May have one longer trip to St.Louis (3.5 hours each way) for a highway test, and will probably just do one highway speed trip to work on the 'main' route to see if I can get there in EV (doubt it).

If there is anything Tony didn't cover that anyone's wondering about, let me know.

Hmmmm...it would be nice to have--I'm gonna miss the data available from CAN-View--I have the car until the 3rd, leave the country on the 5th (for 9 months), but see no reason I couldn't get it in the mail before I leave. if you're willing and Tony's able to get it too me this weekend.

When do you anticipate needing it Jay??

Thanks Jay--can't share what your potential need is for huh? I've got my CAN-View, of course, but no way it would work in the 2010 PHV.

I have been out of town at an off-site meeting for the last couple days with no time or internet connection. Otherwise, your ScanGauge would already be on its way to you. As it is, I'll just ship it to Evan.

Evan, I think you listed your address as Port Macquarie. :)

Even if the CAN-View did work in the 2010 I would not have a screen for you to borrow to use it. But I'm sure the ScanGauge will do.

If you get a chance, could you try an experiment called "Engine On descents?" I'd proposed it to Tony but I think it was at the end of his trial period.

The goal is to trick the car into running the engine in 'warm-up' when there is no load such as descending a hill or grade. The proposed protocol is:

    • EV on hill climb and flats
    • Hybrid-mode at or near crest and on back-side
    BACKGROUND

When the engine is in 'warm-up' mode, it is especially inefficient. But when it is in an 'idle' mode, say descending a hill or grade, it burns the minimum fuel. In an extreme case, it may make sense to break-up a PHEV drive into:

    1. EV at the start
    2. When EV ends, find a place to park or low speed route, 25 mph, during the warm-up
    3. After warm-up, drive the car normally
BTW, send me a PM with a shipping address and I'll loan an Auto Enginuity for your testing. Save and/or share the data and we can collaborate on the analysis.

What happens if you drop it into "B" gear in EV mode at 60 MPH? Would it brake with the ICE?

I tried that. It's a long and complicated story but my parents ended up not meeting at the high school dance and for a while I was never born until I got them back together. In the end, I had to perform that trick two more times before I eventually got everything back to something close to "normal."

Except for Jay. Sorry to ruin your professional music career. But hey, on the bright side, in this life you don't miss it!
