I have had a 2007 for less than a month (mailed first payment today) and the disc changer died. I have played many audio book CDs in it during my 3 hour daily commute but today it decided that was all it would do.

Owners Manual said to take it to my Toyota dealer for this problem. I am reading posts which say it will take 4-6 weeks for a repair. Library will be upset about disks being gone that long.

Only time I like this car is at the gas pump. Any updated information on how to fix this problem without disassembling the entire dash?

Glad I kept my 98 Buick. It still works after 168,000 miles.

Go in to the library and let them know. (Show them the order for a CD Player)
My guess is they will let you slide...

At Worse offer them a Deposit and a Refund when you bring them back...

    As a replacement.
You can always buy a $20.00 CD Player and hook it to auxillary input?

My '04 suffered a stereo malfunction with a library tape inside. I was able to keep renewing the audiobook until I got the tape back. I called Toyota Customer Experience directly and told them that I really want that tape back because it belongs to the library. They were very sympathetic and sure enough they mailed me the tape.

Go to the library and explain the situation. Most libraries are understanding. Offer to show them.

    Good luck.

Hate the disc changer, not the car....

Multi-disc changers always fail and often. Brand doesn't matter either. I did see more Ford vehicle multi-disc changers fail than any other "brand" but I've seen failures in just about every vehicle brand that came equipped with them.

Suck it up and buy a new stereo or iPod adapter. :)

Whoa. Isn't that a bit like hating your house because the TV won't work?

The only time I do NOT like my Prius is when I have to take it to the gas pump. Why do so many people say they *like* that?

prius stereo items - Get great deals on Parts Accessories items on eBay Motors!

Anywhere from $80 to $160 for a new stereo. Replacing it will take a couple of hours if you've never disassembled the dash before (which you haven't). The dash is actually pretty easy to take apart once you know how; I could probably swap out your stereo in under 20 minutes.

The dealer will want a crapload of money, because they're like that. You might be able to get it done for $150-ish (plus parts) at a stereo installer, which is probably less than the dealer will charge.

No way this will take 4-6 weeks, unless your dealer just sucks.

Alternatively, you can use the Aux-in port and connect a portable CD, or use an iPod or any of the other portable media players.

Well, the diff is that you can easily replace the DVD player in your home, that is a relatively unskilled task. It's too much to expect the average car owner to replace the CD changer on his or her own.

They are still close to equally silly. Hating a car or house over a single accessory.

I'll revise mine. It is like hating your house because the built-in oven stopped working. Good enough? :)

The 4 to 6 weeks is for the CD extraction service. The dealers don't open or repair the CD players. They swap it and send the old one somewhere that does the actual disassembly. That's where the CDs are extracted.

Wth is a library? Is that like a brick-and-mortar version of the google-webs? :p

I just plug my phone into the AUX port when I want to stream anything I dont have or when nothing is on satellite radio. Got to love HSDPA!

Library is cool about the discs, they understand the problem since many people in the DC area drive Prius. Just interesting that I bought a car with bells and whistles which are so unreliable and the users's community response to these options not working is to just buy a after market replacement and install it. Seems like we should be on Toyota to make these items work. Having owned Toyota's in the past, I knew them as having a solid reputation for reliability.

What I think we should be doing is warning anyone who wants a Prius to buy the base model and ignore Toyota extras. Buy a stereo, a GPS, and everything else separate. Heck ignore the AC and get a pan of ice with a fan.
