I have a pkg 2 2005 Prius and I have in mind (for now) a couple of mods which I'd like to post here for validation.

    1. VIDEO. The first one refers to having some video on the MFD coming from a back-up camera and/or from a divx/dvd player. This was fairly discussed on other threads but I'd just like to validate my setup idea. I already have the Grom Audio USB2 as audio interface (see a review here http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-prius-audio-electronics/63594-product-review-grom-audio-usb2.html).
Based on my understanding I need first of all the "ultimate camera lockpick" (available here http://www.coastaletech.com/CAMERALOCKPICK.htm although it's not cheap at all). This would enable the video input and controls for the factory MFD.
Then I need a switch since I plan to use 2 video sources as input; I don't know yet what kind of switch, I hope it's not expensive.
One video source I'd like to be coming from a backup camera. I'm looking for something like this one http://www.amazon.com/Pinecom-SQ-309-Infrared-Vehicle-Camera/dp/B002QCV982/ref=sr_1_47?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1259874495&sr=1-47 although I'd like it to be more discrete and I think I can find it cheaper on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/IR-Night-Vision-Back-Up-Wide-Angle-Car-Rear-View-Camera_W0QQitemZ180440602753QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2a03191881
For the second video source I am thinking to use (occasionally) a headrest player (I have a kid) such as the Innovatek 709DVD (see here http://cgi.ebay.com/Innovatek-709-DVD-7-HEADREST-TFT-LCD-CAR-MONITOR-IR-FM_W0QQitemZ190339282760QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2c511af748 ).
I think this should be fairly easy, but if you have suggestions or links to other relevant threads, please don't hesitate.

    2. ALARM. Another thing that is bothering me is the alarm. I live in an area where an alarm is highly recommended. I am not afraid that somebody would steal my car, but I am afraid that somebody would break my windows or damage my car (it happened before). An alarm which goes off after my window was broken is useless for me. Consequently I'd like to have an voice alarm with a proximity sensor such that when somebody approaches too much my car to be informed that the car has a security system. Of course that I'd like to have a sophisticated alarm long range and with remote start but installing that one it's a pain and it's not cheap as far as I understand. So I am thinking to do the following:
First I asked the dealer to activate/turn on by software my stock alarm (I hope he does it, the car is still in service - I took it for the water pump noise and brake actuator noise TSBs, which they claim they don't hear, so I left it for tests; the first one should be covered by warranty; for the second one I hope the dealer would pay since I bought the car certified with 3months/3000miles warranty; I am sure I will have difficulties, so any advices on how to push them to fix the issues would be welcome).
Then, I'd like to add a talking alarm which to be armed automatically when the stock alarm armed (or door locked by FOB e.g.). I hope this is possible. I guess there should be a kind of a pulse available on some wire when I lock the doors. Any suggestion/info more than welcome. The alarm that I spotted is a DEI 516L - http://www.amazon.com/Programmable-Voice-System-model-516L/dp/B0009SZHRY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1259875829&sr=1-1 . If anyone knows a better voice alarm, please let me know. Another challenge I guess would be to connect the DEI alarm module (which would probably go under the dash) to the DEI alarm siren (which would probably go under the hood).
Then it should be fairly easy to connect a proximity sensor ( such as this one http://www.amazon.com/Install-Essentials-508D-Disturbance-Sensor/dp/B0009VFOME/ref=pd_cp_e_3 ) to the input of the DEI talking alarm and a led light triggered (I guess I would need some kind of electronic switch, but maybe not) by the exit of the DEI talking alarm (such as this one http://www.dinodirect.com/Decorative-Car-Lamp-SQ-21/AFFID-11.html?DinoDirect or this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/7-LED-Car-Sound-Alarm-Indicator-Reversing-Light-3-C-13_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2a031aaf8dQQitemZ180440706957QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories ) just to scare the potential thief.

What do you think about this. It should work right? Any advices highly appreciated. Thank you!

I am thinking to add a voice module 516L (I couldn't spot a newer voice add-on) to my factory alarm installed on my Prius. I plan to do this in conjunction with a perimeter sensor just for warn way messages. I found the diagram for DEI 516L here. There it says to arm it I should ground one input (H1/9). So I was thinking to use some wire like the Lock one. But from what I read it seams that Prius has one wire for Lock and another one for Unlock (see here, at page 78). So I am not sure now how to do it? Is the Lock wire set on ground all the time when the doors are locked and on positive voltage otherwise, or on that wire all I get is pulses!? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have to say that I am not interested in the other triggers (doors, hood) since those are taken care by the fabric installed alarm. So I only need to find a wire which has 0 on it all the time when the doors are locked (or the fabric alarm armed), and 1 otherwise.

The unlock is seperate from the lock. chassis ground triggers it.
    Prius Auto Lock
Take a look at I3E block. Pointed out is IE3-6 is the lock. Below it is the unlock (brown wire I believe is IE3-7
Door switches (on the armrest lock the doors) are momentary NO. Panel where the block is at the drivers door kick easy to remove just follow the above Prius Auto Lock pics.

Check out another great link I found hidden in the forums
    http://www.hybrid-synergy.eu/showthread.php?tid=407
    page 202 lock/unlock
    Hope that helps.

I wouldn't buy the coastaltech mod. There are postings about how to do it. Depends on your level of electronics. I've had good and bad experience with coastaltech. Recently (within 2 weeks) not good.
Headrest video is easy and clean. Power is in the center console for most.

Proximity alarm is good but annoying in parking lots. Prius is among the lowest of stolen cars. Alarms are for the honest crook. Even the best wheel locks can be taken off. High crime areas don't leave your car out of sight. Eventually the windows get broken or the door jacked trying to get in. Depends on what you are trying to protect. Car theft put a good disable alarm and get better insurance. Protect stuff inside, dark tint. My .02 cents.

Thanks for input. I gave up to the idea of headrest monitors but I would still like to open the video and audio ports without paying the coastaltech mod. If you know any link or hint on that it would be appreciated.

Regarding the proximity sensor, it is not aimed against professional thefts, but against occasional ones and also I have some kids in the neighborhood that are always playing in the parking lot. So I would like to go further with that idea.

    Thanks a lot!

I would start by noting that there is something fishy in evnut's explanation of autolock mod (maybe I'll send him an email). Probably the implementation is right but in the scheme he mentions IE3 as the master door lock module. I searched in the wire diagrams (at page 201) and noticed that IE3 is the master window switch!! It seems that the door lock/unlock signals are given by IE1-14 / IE1-13, which is consistent with the description found by me here.

So what I essentially want is to attach a shock and proximity sensor which to trigger one of the custom vocal message accepted by the DEI 516L module. I also want to have a LED blinking while the alarm is armed and some other LED that lights only when one of the sensors detects some intrusion.

Of course that I want this add-on to be active only when the car is stopped and the doors are locked. For this I designed custom circuit 01 which based on the 3 wires (door lock, door unlocked and switched 12V+) generates a signal that is ground all the time when I want the alarm to be armed.

I am not sure if it's the best way ... myabe I could have used some other wire (like key sense, but I didn't find to much info on it) or some specialized circuit like DEI 611T.

Anyway I am not sure that my circuit is working and if/where I need to put fuses and diodes. I also forgot to include a master switch just to be able do disable the whole thing if I want to. Also I am nut sure about the battery drain; would it be to high perhaps?

So please take a look at the schemes and see if anything seems wrong. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

    I see.

Search around. Here's one link that gives some info for video.

IE3 I see what you mean. I will have to take off the drivers kick and see what I used. I was doing 3 mods that used the doors/locks at the same time in the same area. (and they all worked...amazing)
Looks like from his photo marked and the wiring p58 it is IE1, IE2, IE3, IF1 TOP DOWN. He marked his IE3, IE1, IE2, IF1

I protected everythiing with a diode to/from anything I installed and across relay coils.

Doors locked everything off. Accessory plug is off when the car is off. Dome is off when the doors are shut. I also tied in my two dome lights, the ones on either side of the door dome, to chirp the alarm (constantly) when left on and doors shut. BUT if the doors were shut and the accessory dome came on then no chirp (someone in the car using the light, car off). Matter of sequence. In mine the dome goes off after the doors are shut after 15sec.

OK, thanks! I searched and found all kind of mods for back-up camera in deed. However I didn't find anywhere some well documented (with pics) description on how/where are actually the video connections. Maybe I'll have to dig some more.

And another thing, my car is 2005 base. I understand that for 2004-2005 the display is analog, so it would probably be even easier to access the video. However the descriptions I found were based on 2006, 2007 and probably don't apply for my model.

Anyway I think you are right: if coastaltech is selling the ultimate camera lockpick for $239, such a circuit really should not cost more than maybe $50 (the parts) and should not be too complicated. But I need the know how.

But first I would be happy to progress with the alarm project during the following months.

I guess switching IE1, IE2, IE3 may explain it (although at least the wire colors are different). I wrote him an email, but no answer yet.

I am pretty confident (given your response too) that I can do everything based on door lock/unlock wires but I need to double check and refine (add diodes to) the circuit. Especially I am worried about my "custom circuit 01" since I never did in practice something similar ... there might be something that I may miss. So I am hopping some more experienced eyes will see it here on the forum and point out its weaknesses.

Only then I will look again to check the wires to know more precisely which is which, learn how to go through the firewall, how to take the dash apart, etc.

Your circuit is sound. Put a diode across the coil to prevent coil kickback into the car/circuits.

Also mentioning from the diagram on 201 wiring. Pin 13,14 says "key" unlock/lock

Right! But I guess it should be fine for the purpose: the key lock would arm my system and key unlock would disarm. It's true that I don't know what happens when I lock/unlock the car by using the door handles, but should not be a big issue.

I also read over the net about a "key sense" wire, but I could not find it in the wiring diagram to see how to use it; maybe that one would be more suited, I don't know.

For the diodes across coils (as you suggested) I also found something here.

Lock/Unlock use the same whether fob or handle. I keep my fob in my pocket and use the door handle to unlock (set to unlock all doors) get in and push power. Get out and press the handle button to lock.

Key sense is for the mechanical key if the car is dead. It's in the fob and only is used on the drivers door. I wouldn't worry about it since when you use it your car will have a dead battery.

Thanks. I think I will go ahead and try it according to the shown scheme in a couple of weeks since now I caught with some other stuff at work.
