I just inherited my brothers '04 Prius. Unfortunatly I can not keep it (just purch. a new car-owe to much to sell it) This car has 95,000 mi on it, but everything is great. It was orig. purchased in CA. What type of warantee would be on the batteries. I have been reading lots of stories here about high milage Prius' still going strong. I am asking for some facts, etc. that I might give potential buyers. Several said they heard that you HAVE to replace the battery pack at 100,000. I know that is not true, but what is the truth?????
PS, I love the car, wish I could keep it.

If it still has the original 12 volt battery, it is about 7 years old and will need replacing soon.

The HV battery seems to have 1 failure in 40,000 in the first 100,000 miles.

    A CA 2004 Prius has a 10 year 150,000 mile warranty.

I think this is a serious misstatement of the Newsweek comment.

The fine print in our warranty book (p.21) stipulates that for the 10 yr/150k mi warranty to apply, the vehicle must not only be equipped with the CA emissions system, it must also be registered and operated in CA, or one of the other states that adopt the CA emissions system.

Florida isn't a CARB state, so davidj08's statement is correct, it wouldn't it'd only have the 8 year/100K mile warranty on the HV battery vs. the 10 year/150K mile.

"You HAVE to replace the battery pack at 100,000" is COMPLETE BALONEY. There are numerous people here and mentioned here that are well beyond 100K miles on the original battery. You can also point them to the couple Priuses at Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity - Hybrid Electric Vehicles that were taken to 160K miles w/their original HV battery and John's Stuff - Toyota Prius Owner - Jesse 4 on the original battery until its life was cut short at 349K miles.

THANKS for everyones input. Armed with sound responses to the mileage vs battery discussion, I sold the veh. this morning. I am going to miss it, I was really enjoying driving it around. Thanks again to all that responded.
