thanks, Pat and Daniel! we're looking forward to the new places to explore. so many things to see! after a lot of time and thought in my to-date career formation, i consider the payoff to be the privilege to have this career opportunity.

Congrats to both of you!! If you need help moving and/or settling in I could see a road trip springing up.

thanks Wayne! you're always welcome at our home.

we're here and working on the settling in part. the awesome thing about this gig is that they value me enough to pay my relocation costs. (not insignificant, and otherwise would have been nearly intolerable, given it's our second cross-country move within a 12-month period!)

i start work tomorrow. well, paperwork stuff. the science stuff starts in a couple of weeks- there's always a little startup delay on that.

I'm soooo happy that everything is starting to fall into place for you both. God knows you've worked hard enough for it!

If there's a security clearance involved, it's more than a couple weeks. Took me 3 months back in the day, not sure what it's like now.

I enjoyed going to Great Falls Park on the Potomac myself. Sometimes there's kayakers out there in the white water, definitely something different than downtown D.C. The National Cathedral is also something I thought was interesting and not on most tour hotspots. It's a more modern cathedral but done in the traditional style. Supposedly there's a stained-glass window of the moon landing, but I didn't find it. And if the Arlington National Cemetery and the carillon isn't your thing, there's the Balls Bluff cemetery outside of Leesburg, which is supposedly the nation's smallest national cemetery, with I think 13 graves from the Civil War. (And hiking trails to the Potomac, when I lived in Leesburg I would go out there and get lost).

Congrats on finally being more "comfortable" after all the scrimping.. I know that well having worked many part-time teaching jobs. See some of the museums, the cherry blossoms in spring.... relax!!!

it'll be falling into place for us *both* once DH lands a good job here. he's got a handful of applications in, more as the jobs are posted, and some networking leads so we're hoping for something soon. there are definitely more opportunities for him here. but i kinda needed a good break in my own career, if i might be so selfish as to suggest :)

they seem to let me come to work and do stuff, so i have no objections yet on this clearance thing. (but if someone else would do the months of administrative approval paperwork for me to do some experiments, that would be awesome.) thanks for the stuff to do suggestions, we're just settled in now and starting to think about what to do on the weekends! i've been thinking hiking trails now that the weather is nice.

hah, that seems to be the common path. too many years in school, then more scraping by, until the right thing comes along. so far so good on this one, so hopefully no more job swapping for a while! there is a lot to explore here, we're looking forward to it.

If you're looking for something easy (read: virtually flat), check out the C&O Canal towpath.

i've been asked for an update and i didn't want to derail the other thread. (hey Bob!)

things are going well! we're settled on the maryland side of DC, enjoying the area, working pretty hard to get established. i have a lot more responsibility than i've had before, which is good because it's a challenge, but also exhausting. always a new learning curve. DH thinks his job is just awesome, and they treat him very well. he doesn't work 70 hour weeks for flat rate pay anymore- a nice change.

i'm finding that sallie mae is not my friend, not at all. [shakes fist]

prius has 93k miles on it now- has taken us through countless road trips, 2 cross-country and several in-town moves, been registered in 3 states (this one requiring by far the most annoying process). his es250 is chugging along for the time being, but we're thinking about getting him an early model hi-hy within the next year. he's wanted one of those forever.

in short, we're getting on our feet. slowly. trying to enjoy the ups of this new life, when we're not working.

and with housing prices around here, we'll be renting for the next freaking decade O_O wow!

Thanks for the update. Glad things are going well, and that DH is working! :cheer2:

FYI, I made another trip to Emmitsburg in October ... uneventfully! :cheer2:

I'm so happy to see you both on the other side of the hill so to speak. I mean after all the struggling, let downs, and frustration, you guys are finally reaping a portion of the rewards that come from such hard work and dedication. I've said it before but you are both truly and inspiration!
