Hello Everyone,
First, thanks for this OUTSTANDING website, its Members, and the info you all have already provided me.

I'm new here, and I've tried the search feature, and not a whole lot comes up for what I'm looking for.
I posted this in another area too, but I figured it would get more exposure here instead.
Sorry for a double post, I’m just looking for guidance form the experienced people here.

I'm an Outside Sales Rep., and I currently drive an Avalanche at 15.1 MPG.
I do ~800-1000 miles per week, and I get paid mileage at the going Federal Mileage Rate of 50¢ per mile, so a Prius appears to be a no-brainer. :D

I drove a Prius few months ago, and I drove 2 more yesterday at dealerships, and I'm just about ready to buy one.

I'm looking at a 2010 IV with Remote Start, BUT I’d consider a III instead.

I'm in Long Island, NY.
One dealer quoted me $26,500 + $480 for the RS = $26,980 for a IV.
He said it was $500 over his cost.
Second dealer quoted me $27,500, then $26,900 for a IV (after he "went to check on something").

I asked each Rep if that is the best deal you can give me, and they said yes.

I just now found out that one of the pricing websites says dealer Invoice is $26,188.

Any advice as to what should my next move be?
Should I skip the leather and go for a III instead of the IV?

The Classic Metalic Silver IV:
MSRP = $27,889 Invoice = $25,902 TMV = $26,188

The Blizzard Pearl:
MSRP = $28,109 Invoice = $26,078 TMV = $26370

Thank you very much for your help,
BigBen

Yes i would skip the leather. The leather isn't even 100% leather. And yes, that price they quoted you could be better. go to truecar.com and get the best truecar certified lowest price from a dealer, and then offer $1000 under that.

Is there any reason you want a III? If you don't care about the sound system, just get a II. The only difference between the III and the II is the upgraded sound system and bluetooth. The differences between a III and IV are more profound including leather, auto-dimming mirror, 3 door smart key system, plasma cutter air system...all frills if you ask me.

I'd seriously consider a II as you will save lots of money. Your high mileage and a prius will go hand in hand. Prepare to spend $30 on gas and have enough gas to drive 600 miles.

You had me going thinking that this is some kind of comparison or a crash tween an Avalanche and a Prius.
You're basically asking which one to buy and how much is a good price.
My advice is figure out that options you want, what's available then check out http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-main-forum/61492-2010-prices-paid-details.html to get the real world prices paid. New Cars, Used Cars, Car Reviews and Pricing - Edmunds.com New Cars Pricing and Comparisons Local, Regional and National Car Price Reports at TrueCar Overstock.com: Online Shopping - Bedding, Furniture, Electronics, Jewelry, Clothing & more Car Dealers - AutoNation - New & Used Auto Dealerships - Cars, Trucks & SUVs are all good websites to search prices and to buy from. If you ever served in the US armed forces, check out www.usaa.com As for options, only you can figure that out. Ask yourself the "Do I want this, do I need this" question on all the available trims and options. Driving 800-1000 miles a week probably demand options and features that make driving easier. I'd suggest the V with advanced technology. The dynamic radar cruise control alone and the pre-collision system are worth the extra price you pay for. The Lane Keep Assist may help but not as useful as the DRCC. You're getting reimbursed 400-500 a week on mileage. You'll have the Prius paid off in less than 2 years. I'd say go all out and buy the most feature packed Prius. It will make your drive more enjoyable.

Well I would test drive both models just to see if you feel more comfortable in the leather-wrapped chair or a cloth-wrapped chair. The benefit of going with a IV is the addition of adjustable lumbar support which may or may not be useful to you given the amount of time you are on the road. It'll also bring heated seats which are a nice touch in the winter =).

^^ Just a note, if you want to buy a fully loaded prius simply for the comfort and advanced tech, you'll be paying around $34,000. At that price, i would recommend you wait until the Lexus CT 200h comes out, which has an estimated starting price around $30,000 and will have many of the features the fully loaded priuses have plus more comfort you'd expect in a lexus.

But it won't have the AT Package features... give and take I suppose. For the price of my Canadian Tech Pack, I could've had a base IS250 RWD w/ automatic (cloth, no moonroof, 16" alloys and metallic trim) or a base 323i w/ automatic (leatherette, 16" alloys, metallic trim, metallic paint extra) or a loaded B200 w/ CVT (heated seats, pano moonroof, 16" alloys, cloth seats, wood trim, media interface)

Thank you very much for the replies, ideas, and website links.
I already went to the Edmunds website to get my current info.

I like the idea of heated seats, as that's what I have in my Av. I don't use 'em very often, but when I do, It's NIIIICCCCEEEEE... LOL...
Another main reason I'm looking at a Prius is because I'd be able to drive in the HOV lane here in NY, which would drastically ease the commute into my territory.

Do you happen to know what the Lexus CT200H's mileage supposed to be rated at?
I think I need 45 MPG to drive in the HOV lane.

Thanks Again,
Ben

No idea but if it's the Prius' drivetrain with added weight (you know.. Lexus standard stuff), it might be pretty close. We are speculating at least 45mpg combined but we won't know for sure till the EPA tests it

That makes sense, thanks Tideland.

Last night I checked TrueCar and came up with Invoice Price of $26,362, and "Your Prices" of $24,602, $24,861, and $26,312.
I e-mailed a couple of dealers back & forth last night, and they said those 2 lower prices were unrealistic.

Here's their replies:
I deleted their names & companies.

"Hi Ben Thanks for the email The prius 4 cost us 26142 I'll sell it for that without the auto start .It cost us 795 The prices you gotten for 24602 is unrealistic
And I know their going to hit you with made up fees, we don't ! I could tell you anything, but when you come back I'm adding fees ( delivery destation administration etc etc ) We don't play games here we give you a real price with no games. Let me know if I can help".

Dear Ben,
As per your request here is the information on the 2010 Prius IV with the remote engine start. The listed price on the vehicle is $28,215 and your internet sales price will be just $27,257 + tax + dmv fees please let me know when if you will be interested in coming in and discuss your purchase further we are offering special financing as low as 0% plus the 2 year free maintenance. Please understand that due to the high demand on these vehicles there are currently few of them available with the options requested and if you are looking to take advantage of the current incentives I will suggest to come in sooner.

Then she sent:

I see that there are Floor Mats, Rear Bumper Applique, & Wheel Locks added to the car, at the end of this e-mail.
I'm just looking for a IV w/Remote Start.
I read somewhere that this place "gives" you your first set of tires "free" too, but there's no mention of that anywhere in her e-mails.

Ben,
Here is the detailed information on the vehicle you requested the only thing extra on the vehicle is the Wheel locks priced at $40.00 and a rear bumper appliqué at $45.00 also there is a $750.00 rebate that you can use I didn’t include it on the sales price I provided to you because I assumed you wanted to take advantage of the special financing but if that’s not the case your selling price will be at $26,507 + tax + dmv fees but you wont be able to take advantage of the financing because is only on or the other also please keep in mind that other dealers may have extra fees such as higher dealer documentation fee, window edging and prep fee. Our price thru the program is based on a $700.00 over invoice on a vehicle in the store please note that I have honored the price even though we have to locate the vehicle. Please let me know if you have anymore questions.

There is one other difference between the II and the III and that is the III has satellite radio. I bought a III and while I didn't think I'd even use the bluetooth, I use it all the time, find it works well with my phone, and am really glad I now have it.

Hi Ben,

I also live on Long Island and opted for the Prius IV. I have a friend who has the III and the cloth is a pain to keep clean for him. He is now having the leather installed aftermarket. Anyway, I purchased my car on 7/25/10 for $800 under invoice (Invoice with extras was about $26,300) at Sunrise Toyota in Bohemia. The only other itmes I paid for was tax, DMV and $75 for processing. PM me and I will give you the guy's name if your interested. I believe you can get at least $500 under invoice from him. The saleman is a nice guy and very attentive.

Ben. Those emails the dealer sent you are bogus. If there is a truecar certified price for $24k, show it to them, and tell them that is your absolute highest price. Truecar certified dealers are supposed to honor the truecar certified prices or they will lose their certification with the website. The dealers will also try to add on extra things to the car (rear bumper thing etc) to increase the price of the car and have it not the same price you get quoted online. Its a gimmick, and i suggest you avoid that dealer.

Whatever you do, do NOT pay over invoice, especially $700 over invoice like that one dealer is suggesting. The dealers are full of crap when they say the invoice price is what it costs them to sell the car. They forget the dealer holdback fees, the bogus documentation fees that gives them $500+ in profits, mfg incentives for meeting sales quotas...etc. If you present yourself as a knowledgable car buyer, they won't be able to pull these lousy salesmen tricks on you.

Airbalancer, I was told the remote start WILL work, even though it didn't make sense to me as to HOW it COULD work.
Dealer Rep said the car has a storage tank or something like that, that keeps the water in the
system warm.
I'll need to do more research on that.

Colonel, thank you for the further insight on tge Sales Reps. My BS meter was going off as this guy was talking.
LOL...

A Prius is a far different car than my Pro-Street '71 Monte, with it's blown 565 in it! LOL...

The thermos he is referring to is real, but it is on a GenII (2004-2009). I believe they did away with it in the GenIII for simplicity. I like the overengineering of my thermos though!

Also, the remote start is useless on a Prius. The Prius burns rich until the engine is warmed up then shuts off for emmissions anyways. So on a cold morning, the car remote starts, burns tons of fuel sitting there, warms up the engine, then shuts it off. When your batteries compeltely discharge to 40% the engine will kick on again and charge them a bit and shut off. Bad fuel economy from a) just sitting there and b) draining your battery.

I suppose the substitution for the coolant thermos in the Gen 3 would be the exhaust heat recirculation system which uses exhaust heat to warm the coolant, which then proceeds to warm the engine.

Thanks for the remote start info., I'd like to find out more before my final decision.

Also, none of these dealers want to drop their price.

Re: Is It Worth The Upgrade for The Larger Rims/Tires?

Hi All,

I have a couple more questions.
As you probably already know, I drive ~800-1000 miles per week, and I was wondering:

1) Is it really worth paying for the upgrade, to get the larger rims/tires???
I think the car looks better with the larger ones, but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money.

2) Also, how does the size of the rims/tires effect to overall performance & mileage of a Prius???

Thanks again for all of your help & guidance,
BigBen
