I've learned from others here that the reason the iPhone doesn't work as well as it could with the Prius is that the iPhone is using technology that's outdated. Apple needs to update the iPhone to support greater functionality and control of the iPhone from the Prius's Nav/Audio system. That can only happen, it seems, if Apple updates the "Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)" from the current version 1.0 to the later 1.3 or 1.4 which could allow for much more control of the iPhone from your steering wheel or Nav system. To send your request/comment to Apple, please visit:

To learn more about the AVRCP visit:

Thanks- and make sure you pass this along to other iPhone users you know whether they own a Prius or not!!!

Hmm - not sure about that. I have several other bluetooth enabled cars and they all work fine with the iPhone including since the last update full voice dialing.

I think it's more the prius doesn't duplicate the sending the button hold properly.

AVRCP works over direct connect. AVRCP also works over Bluetooth - however, there is a software *bug* that prevents forward or reverse track over Bluetooth. This is a well documented bug, and will get fixed eventually - in fact it may already be fixed on the new OS 3.12 release.

If you ever intend to Jailbreak your iPhone, use it on a different carrier, run other non "Apple approved" apps, then doing the latest updates will permanently "lock" your iPhone...

In your other Bluetooth enabled cars are you seeing Track Information, Skip Forward/Reverse, Random, Repeat? If you are not seeing those buttons then you are not seeing an AVRCP 1.3/1.4 connection. The 2010 Prius (Nav Package) does support AVRCP 1.3 (see page 173 of the Navigation Manual).
AVRCP is a Bluetooth profile and is not used for direct connection (wired). AVRCP 1.0 in the 2010 Prius does indeed work as intended (with the iPhone 3.1.2 update) but that profile does not allow for any features beyond Play and Pause.

The point of this post is to pressure Apple to adopt a newer AVRCP profile. AVRCP 1.0 was adopted in 2003 whereas 1.3 was adopted in 2007 and 1.4 in 2008. Which bug are you referring to? The only bug I'm aware of was the one that would start the track from the beginning after the Bluetooth connection was stopped. This was fixed by Apple with 3.1.2.

PLEASE send your feedback to Apple requesting AVRCP 1.3/1.4.

For those that want a quick and easy way to leave feedback, copy and paste the following to the link from the first post.

I would like to put in a request that the AVRCP profile that you use for Bluetooth be updated to a new version. The version you are using right now is AVRCP 1.0. I would like to see either 1.3 or 1.4 implemented. The reason for this is to allow car interfaces to show the relevant command buttons on their navigation screens (Forward, Reverse, Track Information, etc.). This implementation would create a safer driving environment by allowing the users to control the iPhone interface without picking up and looking at the iPhone.

I sent Apple feedback based on your recommendations. Thanks for looking into this.

This might not be the best place to post this, but until I can control my iPhone's iPod through the in-dash screen, I've been primarily relying on the USB interface. However, the iPod will stop playing after 2-3 minutes and an error message will appear on my screen. If I unplug it and plug it in again, it will start working again temporarily. Otherwise, to get music to play consistently, I have to go through Bluetooth. Any ideas?

There is lots of help in the Gen II Prius Audio and Electronics - PriusChat Forums. With your vehicle you can do hands free dialing / talking and using a AUX cable play audio though the stereo system. Bluetooth audio streaming is not supported. If you want more functionality you'll have to add some options. Search that forum for more info.
