Ok, so I am pretty much ready to ditch the factory NAV headunit in my car for an aftermarket unit. Can anyone tell me if there is anything beyond the parking assist that the car needs the factory unit for in an ATP car? In the quest for a much more feature l NAV unit and better audiophile quality. Not to mention I would like to have my center console back where my Alpine headunit is for my audio stuff now. Sounds really good now, but would prefer to see what I am doing on the dash as opposed to looking in the console on occasion to search for music on my iPod and such. Not to mention, would be a bit safer. Am willing to swap out the bluetooth and backup camera at this point, but want to make sure I can do it without affecting the adaptive cruise control or LKA. I can't imagine it would but would like to know for sure before dumping more money into an already ridiculously expensive stereo setup now. Thanks in advance.

Have you read through the nav's owners manual? Everything explained in the nav manual you will lose. AFAIK parking assist is the only thing out of ATP you will lose. Are you doing this to improve the SQ or do you want to do this b/c you don't like the way the factory stereo operates? If you solely want to inprove the SQ you could add aftermarket amps and replace all the speakers in the Prius.

I can only give partial advice since I don't have a V. Can't you turn off the nav and make sure the adaptive cruise and LKA work? I think only the Parking stuff needs the nav. With an aftermarket unit the oem camera should work. They all come with bt mics and you will need to replace this. For some reason the best nav units don't have the highest audiophile feature sets, but any of them should install easily, the fact that you already have an aftermarket amp makes the installation even easier.

If you've read my signature and read past posts from me regarding upgrading the stereo system and trying to use the factory headunit you'll see what all I've done. Gone completely crazy and have spent way too much but too far now to stop. I am replacing the headunit because the factory JBL setup all together is crap for a lack of a better word. The EQ and X-over points are all over the place and change as you change the volume. There doesn't seem to be a good alternative with all of the processors out there that can do what I needed to get true audiophile quality out it. Maybe some day, but Alpine, Audio Control, Audisson, and JL Audio don't do what we need to fix the problems with the factory amp to decipher the digital signal to pass on to an aftermarket amp/amps. I only use my factory piece for Bluetooth, NAV and backup camera right now. I have an Alpine IDA-X305 in the center console running the audio portion. I have a small toggle switch next to the Power button to switch steering wheel controls between headunits. Works well, but not as perfect as I'd like. Hence, deciding to make the change.

Am looking at the Kenwood Excelon DNX-9960. It has 5V pre-outs, Parrot bluetooth, Garmin NAV, and iPod control. Haven't looked at Kenwood in a long time but really like this unit. May not be full audiophile qualities as some purpose built headunits but should be every bit as good if not better than my Alpine unit. Beyond that, much better NAV that's much cheaper to update maps, just as good bluetooth as the factory. I'm sure you know Parrot makes some of the best it seems to me, from what I've read and heard. These are good encouraging words. I figured it would work out that I'd only lose the parking bit. That I don't really care about. Almost wish I didn't get the ATP and just got a base V model. Then I really wouldn't have cared about ditching the factory HU. Figure by next spring I'll be looking to change it up. Any idea where I might find a good new/used center console for cheap? Haven't seen the Alpine unit out of the car and don't know how much they hacked it up to get it to fit under the lid. We'll see....

I think you will be happy with the Kenwood, and it should sound as good as if not better than your alpine head unit. There was a bad UI and slow performance with its predecessor, make sure these things got worked out in the 9960, and that the early bugs are fixed with the new firmware. I ended up with the pioneer z110bt (upgraded with software to the z120 now), and am quite happy with it. It has parrot bt and this works great. I'm sure some junk yard will soon have a destroyed prius with an inexpensive console for you. You may be able to just repair the one you have though.
