What's this Cable For?

    Hey all,

    I've got a "Premium Package w. Solar Panels" car on order, and in Canada that car is not equipped with the navigation package/stock iPod connection. It does have an Analogue Aux-In connection.

    PriusChat Shop : 2010 Toyota Prius OEM iPod Interface Integration Kit [PT545-00082] - $209.99

    Can anyone tell me if this is the cable I would need to connect my iPod to the head unit directly, via the 30-pin conncetor?

    To clarify: I do not want to use a 3.5 mm phono cable from the iPod to the AUX jack.

    I'm confused in what I'm reading about what is required to make this work. :)

    I am cheap, I use the 3.5mm plug

    I believe the difference is this:

    $199 model: This is the Apple 30pin to USB cable for NAV-equipped cars.
    $209 model: This is the Apple 30 pin to some other interface that will presumably replace the XM radio on the back of the head unit. For non-Nav cars.

    I don't think the NAV has built-in 30pin. It has a USB in, so it is universal. Not everybody has an iPod.

    Canard: The 3.5mm phone jack is not that bad. I use it with my iPod Touch. The ability to charge while listening I thought was important, but in fact, just a convenience. I ain't paying $200 for a stupid cable. The Prius is a symbol of hi-tech, so it kills me that Toyota withheld the USB-in. So you have to bend over and take the NAV to get the USB and the NAV performance apparently sucks.

    Well - I'm used to a Sony head unit I installed in my smart that has the 30-pin interface, so I'm spoiled. :) I'm used to only having it charge in the car, and use it at my desk at work. I'm not satisfied with AUX-interfaces as the static hiss drives me nuts.

    Thanks for the clarification - although I'm still not clear... the second one ($209) plugs into an existing plug inside the glovebox?

    Actually, I have no hiss in mine. I turn the volume up on the ipod Touch almost full, and then head unit stays between 25-35 on the volume dial. You can always take your iThing to the dealer to try it out.

    The specs on that USB interface cable reads like it will come out the glove box, but I don't know which one (upper or lower?). Regardless if they have to drill holes or not, accessing my iTouch from the passenger side is stupid. Giving up XM is not a good option either. The AUX works great, no static, pops, hiss or dropout. While driving, I leave the iTouch in the cupholder. When I leave the car, I stow it in the center console.

    One more thing: I picked up a 12V to USB converter at Winners for $5. If I really need to charge either my iTouch or my TomTom on the road, I just stick it in the cigarette socket.
