Harry Reid arrives at clean energy summit. . . in a fleet of giant SUVs

Excellent. That's like Algore's electricity usage being equivalent to that of 30 of us.

So businesses should run on the usage of a small shack and politicians and the president should drive in Priuses, interesting. While Reid or any politician should realize that the people they are addressing in environmental situations are usually radical one way or the other, politicians usually aren't thinking how radical the group really is.

Could be a lot worse, the US could get to the point where we simply pay rich people to be rich like England, talk about a huge waste of money, paying rich people to be rich and live in fancy castles for nothing.

Grumpy, you have been getting a lot of crap recently. I hope you don't take it personally. There are a lot of people on this forum, and each is entitled to his own set of opinions. Likewise I enjoy hearing yours.

I guess you're refering to the Queen? A lot of debate has gone on as to whether we are better as a monarchy or become a republic.

The popular response a few years ago was "would we want a President Blair"? The answer being a resounding no. The Queen is good value for money, very popular around the world and brings in lots of business and/or tourism for very little outlay.

Are we brain washed to think that? Or is there a good feeling of stability with having a hereditary monarchy which is there for the benefit of the people/country as a whole, regardless of their political persuasion?

I'm sure there are arguments for and against and we have them here all the time but the majority are still royalists.

What Canada and Australia think having the same head of state is something I can't answer but find intreguing.

Well there is still a lot of money going towards them living fancy lifestyles, you could still get the same tourists by turning the fancy homes into tourist attractions, instead of guarded mansions, probably get more tourists.

I'm guessing you've never been - Buckingham Palace for one IS open to the public. The other 'castles' and fancy homes are either open to the public or strictly private - possibly in the same way that certain Presidential properties are?

Perhaps you should come over and find out? ;)

You call this getting crap? lol, you should be in my cab at 3am in the middle of nowhere with a couple of thugs who object to paying the fare. Now that's getting crap. :(

I enjoy a good balanced debate and like to hear others views - however different to mine they may be. I also enjoy my job because I get to meet different people from all over the world and find virtually all of them to be pleasant and interesting. Politics may get in the way of Governments, but I find people to be people where ever they're from - you get good and bad and everyone inbetween! ;)

i like the queen. I don't see anything wrong with it if that's what the people want. I think the traditions and history are too important to just do away with. And I would agree that she is a positive influence on the world.

I'd go if I could bounce on the Queens bed or walk through the living quarters, use her bathroom, that would be cool.:D It would be cool to tour England, I'm sure it gets better in the countrysides.

Still think the royal stuff is a lot of money wasted, maybe if you could just keep one royal and make the rest go find a job selling fish and chips. LOL

It is my understanding that the Royal family has its own income, from property and investments. It's not like taxes are supporting their entire lifestyle. I think it's neat that the UK has Royals.

Speaking towards "Demos"... since you brought up politics in the House of Pancakes:

In the US, over the past 34 years, when Republicans held the Presidency, the deficit has gone up. When Democrats were in office, the deficit has gone down. Without exception.

Now, I would expect this thread to be magically transferred to the House of Politics, where it belongs. Bye.

"Do as I say, not as I do" is not a Democratic thing. It's not a Republican thing. It's an All Politicians thing.

I'm sure the day that I'm allowed to bounce on Obamas bed, use his toilet and go for a ride with him on Air Force One will be the day you'll be allowed to jump on the Queens bed

Apparantly keeping the Queen costs less than £1 a year per person in the UK. One wonders how much it costs to 'keep' your President with all the security requirements, even after they've left office.

The other thing about our monarchy is that they are liked by the majority of people from all political persuasions, whereas with a President half the people didn't vote for them and don't like them because of this and half the people who did vote for them don't like them either.

My understanding is that Obama isn't proving too popular? ;)

Your understanding is spot on. Lots of change, not much hope. But back to topic--pretty much have to secure them after they leave office. I imagine it costs us much more while they are in office. My bro was in the air force as a flyer for 24 years and it's pretty amazing what happens every time he (the president) steps on air force uno

My understanding is that Prince Charles isn't proving too popular neither? ;)

What do you think is going to happen when the Queen says bye bye? Will the British "vote" for Prince Williams and ask that big ear Chuck and his camelian consort be skipped?

Charlie's ok. Think it will be a change though. Am sure it would be a good moment for Oz & Canada to consider if they'd want Charlie as King or whether it would be a good time to become republics?

The down side to a monarchy is you have no choice, but Charles is OK and means well and is a bit of an old hippie at heart. Still rather him than President Tony Blair.

I'm not so keen on the polical structure of the US where the President holds the top most power and honour, as opposed to other countries with monarchy or the jobs of the President and the Prime Minister are held by 2 different person. The former often produces dictators. With the latter the Prime Minister is like a top public servant who gets the job done and if he sucks, replaced and forgotten; while the President/King/Queen holds the ceremonial post and acts as a super-embassidor to the rest of the world and also acts as the emergency care taker/power holder in case the polical parties went into civil war. It maintains a sense of unity for the country even though the polical parties are deadly ememies with each other.

It's just that you do need to have a President/King/Queen who's really loved by the people or else it's useless. I wouldn't go see Chuck 'o cheese if he visits Canada.
