Just bought a used 08 w 24K miles. I have until Oct 5 to extend the warranty. Are people thinking this is worth doing? Also, what is it exactly that is covered in the 3 yr/36K?
    Appreciate the input.

    BTW, LOVE the car ;-))

Well, it's a Toyota and we buy them because they are reliable! Your hybrid system components are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, so I would probably pass.

Well that sounds promising. I guess because I bought it used (at a reliable Lexus dealer) and I didn't get it independently inspected (ran out of time, they showed me their own safety check) part of me is still not completely sure...I am still wondering what is covered on the 36K miles warranty , can't seem to find out. Thanks!

Should be in your owners manual packet. Basically, everything is covered except wiper blades. tires, fluids and filters.

    sktn77a,

The hybrid component warranty you stated in your post #2 is incorrect for cricket's Prius only because he is in California where it is 10 years/150,000 miles (whichever comes first).

And regarding your last post, your info is good, but he bought his car used & many used cars are traded in without any of the manuals the car came with unfortunately, so cricket may not have anything to refer to.

Hey Ken....I have a 2005 Prius and the main battery failed this week. The dealership replaced it as I have 55,000 miles on it and it's been just over 5 years since I bought it new. Live in North Carolina. My owners manual says the hybrid system is warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles... Is it just certain states that get the more extended, hybrid warranty? thanks

Ken, in California, only the HV battery is extended to 150K mi/10 years, the rest of the hybrid components are still 100K/8 years like the rest of the states.

    bedrock8x,

O.K., I stand corrected. I have not had to refer to my manual for anything for a long time & I was only remembering what my selling dealer told me 5 years ago when I got my 2005. It was a strong selling point he liked to stress. Maybe I just didn't quite remember properly exactly what he said.

    And for rickasmith98,

It's only the CARB states (ones that have adopted the California emissions standards) that have the warranty extension on the hybrid/high-voltage battery. Back in 2005 that was the 6 New England states, NY, NJ, & CA, but I think in the last few years they may have added a few more states.

    Hey Ken,

You're right, no owners manual. But the bottom line, do you think I should buy the extended warranty or not? I have 2 weeks to decide.

    Thanks,

    Cricket

BTW Cricket is a she :)

    Cricket,

So sorry to just assume the male gender. Thanks for correcting me. I never mind being corrected when I'm wrong.

As far as the warranty, I don't think what your dealer is offering you is the official Toyota Financial Services factory extended warranty since you have up until the regular 3-yr/36,000 mile warranty expires to pick up the REAL extended one. Just a word of caution, right now mileage-wise you're still O.K. to get it, but the 3 years (36 months) is from the original "In Service" date which doesn't always jive with the original purchase date because some dealers would back that date up maybe a few days or a week for the sale to be counted into the end of the previous month's sales figures/quota. So even though it is a 2008 model, it may have been put into service in the fall of 2007 (in which case the 2 weeks you're only being allowed to make your decision might be true), but definitely ask to see the paperwork of the one you're being offered to be sure if it is the official Toyota Financial Services one. Have your dealer look up in Toyota's records to find out what the "In Service" date of your car really is.

If it is the right warranty, I hope they only want to charge you about $1,000 or don't get it from your dealer. You should still be able to get it from Troy right here on this site for only about $990 (that's what I paid in 2006 for the one I bought from him for my 2005 Prius). I think the one for the 2010 model is $1,055. I've never had a claim against mine & it will expire in less than 400 miles (I'm at 99,6-- miles now), but it sure has given me great piece of mind, especially since a new MFD replacement was in the neighborhood of $4,000 & the PSD (Power Split Device= transmission) can't be repaired---just replaced to the cost of about $9,000. Whether to purchase it or not is really up to you if you have an extra $1,000 to spend now or a lesser amount or even larger amount later on down the road if anything normally covered were to fail in your car. If you do buy it, you're gambling/betting $1,000 that something bad will happen to your car that will cost more than $1,000 to repair/replace.

If the 3rd anniversary of your original "In Service" date is indeed fast approaching & you want to spend the money to get the official extended warranty, either ask your dealer to sell it (the official one ONLY) to you for no more than $1,000 (NO tax is supposed to be charged for it either). If he won't do it, you can always buy it here at this site from Troy Dietrich/Warranty Shack for that price (by the way, we're talking about the 7-yr/100,000 miles/$0 deductible version for that price). He has cheaper versions for same miles but shorter yrs, or shorter miles & yrs, & different deductibles. He tried to talk me into the same miles but shorter time that would have saved me about another $200-$300, but I wouldn't do it. How dumb I was!! I wish I had taken him up on it. I paid the higher price for 7 yrs/100,000 miles, but my warranty will expire by the miles first almost 2 years before the time period that I paid the extra $200-$300 or so for. If you want one from Troy [or your dealer if he will match the terms---but don't mention Troy's name or the dealership he works at (competition for the high profit that other dealers may charge $2,000-$3,000 for is cut-throat & Troy would be run out of town---at Troy's low prices his dealership is still making a decent profit], then have a good idea of the annual mileage you drive to best judge which version will save the most for you. Troy really has your interest at heart & will try to save you money (I wish I had listened to him).

Here is a link to the extended warranty he sells talked about here.

    http://priuschat.com/forums/sponsor...rranty-service-contracts-123.html#post1100563

Look at his contact info in the latest of his posts in post #'s 1226, 1228, & 1230. He uses the screen name TOG (for his dealership) & if you decide to use e-mail to contact him (rather than by phone), he usually responds with info or a quote in less than an hour. If you don't see anything from him within that time, then check your bulk or spam box because that's where his e-mails sometimes become trapped. He WILL help you.

Don't waste your time or money on a 3rd party or aftermarket extended warranty because they will take your money up front & have lots of "NOT-covered" exclusions or possibly go out of business before you need them & the warranty may only be good at your selling dealer (so what happens if you break down while crossing country?---you would have a really expensive tow back to your selling dealer to make use of that warranty if the failed part or system is even covered). [An extended warranty that says you will get your money back if you have no claims against it is NOT the official Toyota one, by the way]. NO such worries with the official Toyota Financial Services extended warranty. It's good at any Toyota dealer & check with Troy on this, but I think his warranty includes Toyota's Roadside Assistance for the duration & the use of a free loaner car from a Toyota dealer if your repair takes more than a day (I think there's a 5-day limit on this aspect, but maybe I'm wrong---maybe 5 days per occurrence).

I think I've shared just about everything I can think of regarding the extended warranty, but I can't make that buy/not buy decision for you. I hope I didn't bore you with all of this, but it is good to be an informed shopper.

Thank you thank you Ken for all of that great info. I bought it from a Lexus dealer so have not been offered the official from them, guess I could get it from Toyota somehow but was already considering Troy after reading other posts.
Yes, it is up to me to decide. Now, if I can just find out what is covered under the various warranties, the 36K which is about to run out vs. the 80K (I think?/) and the 100 K. Sure wish that manual was still in the glove compartment :))
