You gotta love a group of car nuts who would drive backwards "for miles" just to see what effect that would have on accelleration when they finally decide to drive forwards.

I always wondered what the top speed of a car would be in reverse, and now I know the answer, at least for a Gen I Prius.

BTW, as I understand it, the gen III is always supposed to maintain at least 2 bars--I think it's somewhere in the owner's manual.

Amazing, I wonder what the MPG is at 115?

    We had a 02' Mercedes C240 and a 06' BWM 330i.
And we drove those speeds, and it was smoother, but just in a heavy fashion.
The BMW felt at home at 85mph, and got 30mpg with premium gas.

I believe that you have just set the world land speed record for non-turbine, wheel-driven vehicles AND getting extreme fuel efficiency at that speed.

    Hey y'all.
I haven't posted in awhile, but Brad and I tested our first generation Prius and have found that the fastest speed I could reach was only 101mph. The battery was assisting, but it was very low, then the battery stopped throwing power at the electric motor and there was no flow to the battery. The MFD said that the engine was powering the wheels while supplying electricity to the electric motor, and the battery was just on standby. When the battery stopped assisting, my speed dropped from 101 to 100 then to 99 then 98mph and it stuck around there. The mpg from the MFD displayed at those speeds was about 23-28mpg.

    115. But I've gotten it up to 117 down a hill in West Virginia.

at the summers MINI vs Porsche event, i took the Prius out on the Road Atlanta track and hit the mid 90s on the backstrait..but scared myself pretty bad as the braking and handling were not up to the task..did 3 laps though..!!!

Look young man...I'm not your Dad but I would like to talk to yours...As a teen I did some pretty stupid things with my car including going over 100 and now that I'm older I look back I can say WOW that was stupid...can you guess what you really did wrong?

There are many things (even on a closed airstrip) that could have gone really wrong. An yes people do extreme things all the time (hang gliding, bungee jumping etc. so it's your life..)

BUT YOU HAD A FRIEND IN THE CAR!

    Not cool....

Sorry to sound like a Dad but it seems you could use a talk with yours about now...

Actually..in the video that you had just seen, I was by myself. I was in the wrong for driving fast, and holding a camera. In the 2001 Prius was when I had a...well ex friend. Don't worry, I don't plan on doing it again. I got a big talking to from my father.

Well you seem like a good person...and my definition of that is someone who looks out for friends and never ever endagers them. What you risk yourself is your business but never endanger another or let anyone put you in danger...

    Words to live by.

    Thanks.
And don't worry, I don't think badly of you for putting me in my place. Your not doing it to be rude, your doing it to protect me and others.

Doing speed tests on closed tracks, like in the opening post: OK, fine, if that's your thing. Doing it on the open road like in the video: Dumb, dumb, dumb. Not for crashing yourself, but you never know what (or who) will pop out in the middle of the road.
