I think everyone knows on legal issues, right-and-wrong can be turned upside down....the law can be used to punish or to get away with something.

Your parents might not sue, but others might.

Often businesses will prohibit something if there is a one-in-a-million chance of it going legal....it also makes insurance expensive.

I hate the lawsuit-happy society we live in, but we have to deal with it.

I don't find what 16 year old TPC did all that bad. As mentioned in his original post and video it was done in a pretty safe controlled environment. Its much better to find out the limits of your car in that way than face it in a panic situation. Going straight is one thing but knowing the handling characteristics of the car is critical when making accident avoidance maneuvers at highway speeds. TPC seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulder so does not need to be scolded any further. Its much more dangerous to be driving while calling or texting on your cell phone. This morning, I saw a guy texting and eating a breakfast bar while steering his Range Rover with the back of his hands. That's dumb and dangerous.

except that's not what happened at all. Seems like he already did the speed test before posting it, so he really didn't get some sort of future encouragement from members who have thought-police powers and can read his mind.

Wow, just wow. This thread seems to be a massive overreaction. Kids and young adults all do a certain amount of experimentation. Some of it is dangerous, some just stupid. It's part of growing up. The fact that this experiment was done on a closed course shows more responsibility than most. If anything, I would applaud him for exercising more caution than the usual young male.

And thank god for that, given some of the ones we met in Detroit.

I remember seeing the post in question when it first arrived and I had two thoughts, first that a moderator would moderate it immediately and second, why was the poster trolling this forum?

I can say with 100% certainty there is no risk of a lawsuit. That's because This little fantasy of yours never happened.

The ONLY possible way that there MIGHT be a lawsuit (which would probably be thrown out of court) is:

    1. Poster A asks "How fast can my Prius go?"
    2. Posters B - Z respond "The only way to find out is to go as fast as you can on the highway."

Where Poster A does just that and crashes.

Why it would get thrown out of court:

If there was 100% feedback to Poster A as I showed posters B - Z giving, then there MIGHT be a case. Maybe. But I doubt it.

However, people on this board are not stupid. IF somebody posted that as a response, there would be a half dozen posts saying that was a really stupid idea.

By the way, when I say "This didn't happen," I don't mean that someone saw that thread and decided to drive their car at mach 3 and crashed it. What I mean is they were on a closed course where it's safe to do things like that.

If they tried that on the open road, people (including me) would post saying how that's a stupid idea (in fact I just noticed yesterday they did just that, and I just posted how that's a stupid idea).

Finally, that YouTube line wasn't meant as a personal insult. I can tell by your reaction you don't know what it is, so I'll tell you what I meant. YouTube is a site on the Internet where anybody can post short films (usually of themselves), called videos. One of the most popular types of videos is of people doing stupid things, then getting physically hurt as a result of doing said stupid things. Wait, it gets better - then other kids watch these videos on YouTube, try the exact same thing, and also get hurt, and post THOSE videos on YouTube. There are hundreds - probably thousands - of these videos there. As far as I know, YouTube has never been sued.

For those of you who thought what T-P-C did was dangerous and irresponsible, watch this:

    That was fun. :)

At least on a bike, chances are less that he'd take anybody with him. That *was* a suicide attempt, wasn't it?

In this region, in the past year, a significant number of these suicide attempts have been successful. Fortunately, I don't recall any of the recent ones causing any collateral damage.

You mean his kids. He was late getting his 5 year old daughter to nursery school, which explains his hurry. She didn't mind the speed so much but those wheelies made it really hard to hang on. :p

one thing i learned from NASIOC

stupid people do stupid things, especially the young drivers.

the mantra over there is when a 16 year old gets a STI it will be mashed within 3 months. i holds true for the majority.

no matter how hard you try to prevent bad driving in a forum it always comes down to people will do whatever the want.

the best you can do is post accidents with dead people and hopefully it will sink in

here's one with a wrx and few kids got killed (no bodies).

they were flying (110 mph+-) through the middle of town, lost control, smashed into a tree. the tree won. they lost

I can't be the only one who's ever watched the "Getaway in Stockholm" series around here....can I?

    +10000000000000000000

Same rule at Evolutionm. Dumb rich kid gets their parents to buy them an Evo, subsequently wraps said car around a tree (oddly, the wing usually survives).

I won't event start about that Hogan kid who "drifted" his Supra into a tree permanently injuring his best friend:

    1. I know what YouTube is and linked them here on more than one occasion. YouTube has pulled videos, typically for copyright concerns, but they have probably had other types of objections.

    2. Most people have common sense, but a few don't and create issues.

    3. The US has more lawyers per capita than any other nation...yes we need a justice system, but lawsuits are often used to subvert it, often by people in point #2 that create issues.

    4. Lawsuits over internet posts have happened....I would not be too confident it could never happen here...although I hope it does not.

Say at a medical forum someone gave bad advise, someone took it and died. Even if it's legally protected, there are no winners and the forum it happens on certainly is not. This situation is not that much different
