You probably won't have had it on your news in the USA, though our Canadian friends might know all about it, but there has been a lot of problems with accomodation and the athletes village for the Commonwealth Games in India.

The games start in a few days but the accomodation in many parts of the athletes village is far from ready. Also, a new footbridge connecting the athletes village to the stadium collapsed onto the road below - luckily nobody was badly injured and no athletes were on it at the time.

At India’s Commonwealth Games, shame might be a blessing | Analysis & Opinion |

So, why the thread title of unusual names I hear you ask? Well, the Mayor of Delhi where the games are to be held is called Sheila Dikshit [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheila_Dikshit]Sheila Dikshit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] .

I know there are cultural differences and backgrounds to names but I must say her surname is mildly amusing in a childish way. Urban Dictionary: dick-shit

Anyone else know of any mildly amusing names?

At an urban summer camp there was a young girl whose name was
    pronounced, "Shith-e-id."

On the required forms, her name was spelled, Shithead

What in the world were the parents thinking? :noidea:

I remember making a support call to somebody who'd reported a bug. The ticket said her name was Ida Amin.

When I asked to speak to the user she said "It's Zida".

(Anybody who doesn't understand why I even mention this might like to read [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idi_Amin"]this[/ame].)

this one isn't as outrageous but i had a student named Princessa once. I kept thinking, what kind of arrogant parents would name their kid that, and who would like having that kind of name? it's not even a real name, but a title with an A at the end.

Omg, that's just awful. Poor girl.

Reminds me of a coworker whose sister is a cop. One day she pulled over two guys driving erratically. When asked what their names were, then said (spelled phonetically), 'Lamonzhelo' and 'Aronzhelo'.

She took their id's and discovered they were twins. Their names were spelled Lemonjello and Orangejello. :p

I worked with an engineer named Richard Dragon...he hated being called Dick...

During those days there were a lot of 12-14 hour days... his name fit...

He once even complained to the shift manager about us calling him by his own name...

We never stopped Jonesing on him though...

    Bigot

it's sad when one calls another a bigot, in a open forum discussion, when they really don't know the other person.

never apologize to people like this because they get off on the power of trying to control another. especially when they lack any intellectual retort.

Bollox to them. Their loss. Probably making up for something small. Like you said, they don't know me or my background and as such are unable to make such a judgement.

I know from my job that 99% of people are fine, but you always get a jerk. :D

A cousin was a substitute teacher for a brief time, and also encountered these names. They were also twins, iirc.

I think it's Venezuela that has a very.. interesting.. approach to naming their children. Ah, here it is:

That name should really be spelt Dheekshith. BTW, quite a common "joke" among IT folk here since it is not an uncommon name ... Infact the most famous Bollywood actress of 80's was Madhuri Dheekshith.
