True, it's all a belief system. Atheists are very strong in their belief that there is no God. It's their "faith". To argue otherwise is mere semantics. The interesting thing for me is how adamant some people are that their belief is correct. Their belief that they are correct is so strong, that they use demeaning pejoratives against others for their own beliefs. What's funny about that behavior, is that they really know no more than the person whose beliefs they condemn. No one knows a damned thing. It's all about one's own personal belief and faith.
Unitarian although I'm not so sure about the Universalist. Still, I'm trying to be more tolerant of other belief systems: Then there is this recent news article: Groundbreaking Pew Forum Religious Knowledge Study Features Stephen Prothero Bob Wilson
I believe that no god or gods has revealed themselves yet. I claim this makes me agnostic, although atheists swear I am an atheist. I do not disbelieve in gods, I just have not noticed any, yet.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Arthur C. Clarke, 1961 From where I sit, the appearance of the relatively untroubled 24/7 operation of PRIUSchat looks like magic... or a miracle. In the latter case, Danny is at least god-like. I think there should be a religion named Dannyism. We could make weekly contributions/tithes to send the Mods -- we will call them CeeCees, for Catalytic Converters -- on missionary efforts to godless high-rider and TDI forums... And randomly selected NOOBies to be used for burnt offerings as may be prudent/required.
you can't teach about religion, because, within every religion, there are many different beliefs. that's why there are so many different factions of Christianity, islam, judaism, etc. what would you teach?
No they are not. Just as evolution & creationism aren't just two belief systems. Ofcourse religionists have been trying to make this "argument" for ages without much success (so, they usually kill the atheists).
Grow up in the bible-belt . . . religious education is all but mandatory. I went to an Episcopalian middle school for two years which included religion class. On Sunday, we attended "Disciples of Christ." But before then, we lived in the Tex-Arkana area of southeast Oklahoma and met a lot of different southern denominations. Oral Roberts was over in Tulsa Oklahoma and on TV. Then in high school, I dated a Catholic girl. When I was in Marine boot camp, I found signing up for church services got me out of the barracks for an hour or two Sunday morning. It wasn't so much an interest in theology as a break and the cute girls were nice . . . Mormons. Bob Wilson
If you do not disbelieve in gods, then you are agnostic. If you beieve there are no gods, then you are athiest. Pretty simple distinction.
It is for the distinction between athiests and agnostics. If you do not believe in gods and are firm in your stance such as myself, then you are an athiest. If you have some doubt, any at all, then you are not an athiest.
There is a biological hypothesis for God and our species. We have an extended childhood with a substantial period of dependence up on our parents and community. To an infant and young child, our parents are omnipotent and omnipiscence, until puberty. Well you don't throw away 'omnipotent and omipiscence' easily so God or God(s) become an acceptable substitute. We are raised to believe in God and our parents simply carry that forward by including that in their teachings. It is a great hypothesis until one perceives the 'the spirit.' Bob Wilson
I see my ethnic group is rather poorly represented in Prius ownership, so in its defense I want to mention that Jews have a disproportionately high fraction of atheists within their ranks.
you know Zews is probably not liking this conversation ! I'D BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR LIGHTNING IF I WAS YOU GUYS!!!!
Strange how the meaning of a word can change with economic or social times. Sabbath used to mean "Saturday, the day the Witches meet" Theist, one who believes in (a) God Atheist, one who believes in the opposite of (a) God Agnostic, one who believes in neither I voted agnostic but looking at the "present" use of the word would not have voted.
Truely uninformed Prius owners ound:ound: More evidence of when the clueless have a keyboard... And your last sentence says it all... you think after you've voted... hmmmmmm... Lots more jokes available for that one Bra... Just saying...
