I had about four bars on my fuel gauge and was thinking about refueling. I was visiting a relative and left the car parked facing uphill ona steep incline for a couple of hours. When I got back in the car to head home, my fuel gauge was up to one bar below full and the miles traveled was reset. I KNOW I did not refuel. I have only driven a few miles since, but am concerned about the accuracy of the gas gauge -- and how did it reset itself????
First of all, welcome to PriusChat! :welcome: I think the gauge may just be fooled by the tipping of the fuel in the tank and thought you have added fuel thus resetting the miles traveled. No worries. I think the reading should come back down once you drive on level ground for a while. I do refuel my car at two bars to be on the safe side (running out of fuel and continue to drive is not good for Prius). Good luck!
The fuel level sensing system has an inclinometer to help adjust for grades, but it is far from perfect. The fact that you use the words "accuracy" and "gas gauge" in the same sentence show that you have a lot to learn about the Prius Gen II fuel system. Search this site for the term "guess gauge" and you will get a better idea. Tom
