I'm sure this has been asked before, but I was not able to find a tire discussion for us Prius V owners with 17" tires. It's been almost a year and 40,000 on the stock Toyo's, and I'm looking a huge upgrade. I'm looking for a quieter tire that will handle snow/ice much better. I currently live in Minnesota, but travel all over the Midwest. The amount of snow in no way warrants Snow Tires (I also don't have room to store), but when the weather gets nasty, it's NASTY so I want to be prepared. My searches came up with Continental DWS, however my local Discount Tire warned me that the tire is complete overkill for a Prius, and that it will destroy my gas mileage. What does everyone think?

Also does anyone have a good recommendation on where to get an Air Filter (engine not cabin) besides the dealer? Yes i'm going 40k miles on my stock air filter

I asked the same question a while ago but nobody seems to know probably because those low rolling resistance tires are so new. Along the same line, what's the best LRR all-season tire for mostly dry conditions (Los Angeles area)? I'd ensure that any replacement is LRR and has the raised rim protector.

Well, after having just purchased last week, Hankook H727's for two of my cars based upon the November '09 Consumer Reports review of tires, I find that the new November issue of Consumer Reports has the latest tire review. You might want to read that article for another opinion.

When my Toyo tires go, they will be replaced with Nokian WRG2 tires. WRG2's are available in the 215/45R17 size, are low rolling resistance tires, and are good enough in snow to get the snowflake symbol, although true snow tires are better still.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I could not find Prius airfilter on that site. Any more suggestions? Rumple do you think Nokian WRG2 is that much better than Continental DWS? Thats a pricey tire. Will LRR cost really be made up for long term?

I have the continental extremecontact dws. Its a good tire. tire rack has some comparisons, but its hard to pin down best. I would not believe consumer reports actually tests all the new tires well, if at all.

I'm not sure what is overkill, the continental should last 50k miles. I haven't seen tests that show gas mileage, but they do provide good traction in heavy rains from experience, and well in snow from tire rack testing.

I think your local tire store was wrong, the Continental DWS would be an excellent choice for a Prius V. Your mileage would probably not be significantly different than it is with the Toyo Proxis A20 tires you have now. I will be replacing my Toyos in another few thousand miles and I am leaning toward Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus from either Tire Rack or Costco, I will also consider the Continental DWS. Here is Tire Rack's survey results, which you probably have already looked at: Consumer Survey Results By Category

Here is another engine air filter number:
    NAPA 9320

I used the NAPA filters (ICE and cabin) they looked as good to me as the OEM filters I removed and they are a bit less expensive.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ordered my filter. I decided to stick with my original plan for the Continental DWS. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus look equally as good, however they are more expensive and weigh 2lbs more per tire :D . I'm going to convince myself that weight difference will matter.

I think you made a good choice David, I'll take tires that are a "complete overkill" anytime. I think that means they corner to well and stop to good, just what I want. :)

Thanks Tom. I often go around corners as if I were driving my previous Subaru STI, so hopefully the tires will be safer than the Toyos. The overkill comment didn't come into play until I said they were for my Prius. I believe he was referring to the speed rating. There are also the General Tire Alitmax HP out there, but they are not readily available through Discount Tire in this size so I'm bailing.

Let us know how you like the handling versus the Toyos. They have a flexible sidewall but its no problem when you pump the tires up to at least 40 psi.

Do let us know if either of these have the raised rim protector in the 214/45-17 size. The hi resolution photo on Tire Rack is useless in determining this because it's only a representative typical size that may not necessarily be the size you're looking at.

Will do. Just to warn you I'm not getting for another month. I have a couple 2k mile trips I'm going to burn on the Toyos before I make my move. There is a mazda 3 with these same DWS tires and size in my apartment complex sometimes. I never see the owner but I'll take a look for the rim protector. BTW these tires look like you can climb walls with them in person

I went by the tire department when I was at Costco today and they had the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus in our size, 215/45-17. They have the rim protectors.

I took a picture of these DWS 215/45-17 tires on the local Mazda 3. It appears they do not have rim protectors, as they are flush with the rim unlike the Toyos. If you would like pics let me know, I can Email. I have no idea how to post pics.

Thanks for the info. If you want to post pics, there's a Attach Files button under Additional Options (below the post window). This option is present when replying to a post, but not in Quick Reply (in which case you want to Go Advanced). If you know how to attach a photo to email, you know how to do this.

Here are terrible cell phone pics of how the Continental DWS 215/45-17 sit on the Mazda 3 rims. The rims seem pretty exposed compared to the Toyos..... regardless, I'm going to make them my next tire in a couple weeks. Thanks for the help in attaching the pics, it was embarrassingly easy.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new set of tires for my V. Right now, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus is the leading candidate. Reviews here and elsewhere are very good, plus I like the raised rim protector (vs. the Cont. DWS). Any updated reviews on the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus, or new recommendations for the (2010) Prius V?
