    The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Toyota plans to add two new members to the Prius family to on sale in dealerships by the end of 2012, according to unnamed dealer sources who said Toyota made the announcement at their national dealership meeting. One of the new members of the Prius family is what is currently known as the Alpha and was caught by spy photographers in the photo above. This new member of the Prius family is said to gain 50% more interior space and storage than the current Prius. Nothing was said about a 3rd row of seats that would enable the Prius Alpha to carry 6 or 7 passengers. I expect this model to achieve less than the 3rd Generation Prius' 50 MPG, but greater than 40 MPG. The 2nd model is a smaller Prius, closer in size to the Toyota Yaris. Perhaps this will be the model that is close to what we've seen in the FT-CH concept, which we covered back in January. This model is one that could reach 60 MPG. The last time we had a dealer meeting that covered the Prius, PriusChat's good friend bossdowner showed up with a bunch of exclusive photos of the 2010 Prius. Come on out, bossdowner! There's also Toyota to unveil new Prius models: WSJ - MarketWatch.

    Back to WSJ, if you do a Google search for "Toyota to Offer Two New Prius Models by 2012" (or any (?) WSJ headline), you should get a link to the WSJ to read the full article anyway.

    I believe they currently have some arrangement where if the referrer URL to the WSJ article is from Google, they'll show you the whole thing. If you visit the WSJ URL directly, you'll need a subscription (since the referrer field in the HTTP GET will not exist.).

    I think this is great news. Really.

    I'm probably being too anal...but the only very minor thing that bother me? The use of the term "Variants".

    While probably specifically accurate and perfectly fine...it makes Prius sound like a mutating disease.....IMO someone wanting to sound more technical and important than they need to sound...

    I'm for an announcement stating "We Done Gunna Make some Special Prius Real Soon!".

    Wow!
    94 + 22 = 116 ft. {3}
    116 + 58 = 174 ft. {3} :: big Prius
    This is larger than every small station wagon. I would not expect 50 MPG but it ought to put any equivalent volume vehicle to shame.

    The compact Prius is also interesting especially if it is 'sports tuned.' By that I mean a smoother steering and perhaps a sports suspension. This might finally bring up the Prius handling 'numbers' those vague, ill-defined handling opinions car reviewers write about.

    Given the number of announced (not delivered) hybrids and EVs, this is a good way to maintain market share and leadership.

    Sounds like the larger one may be the Prius Mini-Van that's been floating around here the past few days. If the smaller one is based on the Yaris, I hope they revise the looks so it's not as butt ugly as Yar nice person!

    I'd really like to see a full hybrid that can be towed 4 down behind a motor home! Currently we're stuck having to keep a convestional gas vehicle so we have transportation while on the road...

    Re: Toyota Motor Corp today told dealers two new variants of the Prius will be in dealers by end of

    Late thought but today, hybrids are less than 3% of the total vehicle market. Sure there are more versions coming but to be serious, hybrids need to take a bigger chunk of the total vehicle market. Having a wide variety of hybrids at different sizes and price ranges makes it much easier for folks to find the hybrid that matches their needs. Not all families come in the same sizes and with the same requirements.

    As for the gassers, well there are folks who don't drive much, less than 10,000 miles per year. They aren't burning much today so savings for these profiles are not quite as important . . . other requirements may be more important.

    Have you looked into towing the Prius on a front wheel dolly? Toyota's never had anything (likely nver will) other than manual trans. that could be flat towed.

    Yep, you're right. You're too anal. Would the term 'variations' be better? With cars, they'll probably use the term 'models' more often than not.

    Good thing you don't have a VW Type III Squareback (I've owned a few air-cooled volksies). This particular model was called the Variant in Europe, but the Squareback in the U.S. so it wouldn't be confused with the Chrysler Valiant.

    I'm guessing that it will be more of a basic car. Low priced, smaller engine, higher mpg. I was at some event 1-2 yrs ago and Toyota was doing a survey that asked (essentially) about what cars would I like to see as a hybrid. And a smaller, higher mpg model was one of the choices.

    It seems like a $15000, small, 80 mpg hybrid would be a nice car.

    48km plug-in? Has anyone else seen as source for this range?

    "The Japanese automaker will begin selling a Prius station wagon starting next summer as either a 2011 or 2012 model, said Adam Lee, president of the Lee Auto Malls chain of dealerships in Maine. It will sell a plug-in version of the Prius that can get 30 miles (48 kilometers) on a charge starting later in the year, he said."
