Do anyone go longer than 5000miles oil change?

Send in your oil and filter for analysis. I use to do 10k. Filter and oil analysis shows filter every 5k and oil at 15k for me.

Hi Britprius, do you know if there's a list of approved 10k oils? I'd be interested to have a look.

Also, is that 10 miles on the one OEM filter. I'm interested to know because I'm currently doing about 7500 miles (oil and filter) but would like to stretch it a bit longer so that I only have two changes per year.

Yes it's definitely true that the optimal OCI depends upon your driving conditions. Roughly how many months does it take you to clock up 5000 miles?

Erm, pretty much every Toyota owner in Europe. The official Toyota service interval over here is 10k miles (for most of their range including the Prius gen2 & gen3). Just use a good, branded oil suitable for the car.

I wanted my Tacoma to die faster so I've been changing oil once a year with mobile one for the past 5 years. Damn thing still runs. It won't die. Damn Toyota.

It takes me about eight months to do 5k, but lately it has been more. Then I can go into almost nothing again. Quite often small trips are to a store and back about 1.5 miles. The engine does stop during this distance, but if I remember right, this is not necessarily fully warmed mode. I feel that is very hard on an oil. So to each his own. I am comfortable with "My Way." I am still not going to pay 25-30 dollars for a snapshot test of my used oil from a midstream sample, probably after a longer run that burns things off.

Yeah that seems like a reasonable way to go given your usage. In my case I do my 7500 miles in about 4 month to 5 months easily. Also many of the trips are 20 to 30 miles, so I feel comfortable going this 7500 on just about any good quality oil.

FYI, I would NOT use Fram filters! I use the Purolator PL20195. It's about 2X the size of the stock and is a much better filter. This is especially important if you extend the changes. I'm doing the double interval; after 2 maint lights, (I reset the first one w/o changing) then I change on the second one. I use the PL20195 and Mobil 1.

If you get bored, Here's some good info on the some of the various filter brands out there:
    Oil Filters Revealed

I've had an engine failure years ago on another car before I knew anything about filters. The mechanic pulled off my Fram and cut it open to reveal the anti-drainback valve that clearly wasn't functioning. What was happening was oil starvation at every startup!

On a Prius, this is vitally important as our engines are stopping and starting often. You don't want to risk drainback! It allows the "dirty" oil from the contaminated side of the filter to drain back into the oil pan when the engine stops. BAD!

I see no reason to go much over the 5000 mile interval.
The Prius does not hold all that much oil, so I see no reason to rationalize extending the intervals.
Also, I have a lift, and a fully equipped shop, so not a big deal for me.
I don't feel I am "wasting" oil, as I have always taken it for re-cycling.

As for filters. Nothing but NAPA for me. They are made by Wix and I feel they are the best in the industry.
as pEEf posted previously, Fram is an inferior filter. Made cheaply, that's why they are sold at cut-rate auto parts stores.

The prius holds the correct amount for the engine size. Going longer cuts cost if you use expensive synthetic and recycling just means they dump it in a special land fill or put it in barrels.

I have an 05, 06, 2-07, 08 prii (kids cars). Used fram filters with zero problems. 2 nissan trucks fram filters no problems. 3 cars 200kmi no problems with oil related problems. Had the filter and oils tested. No problems. I stick with no problem parts. Of course 1 in 50 may fail as with anything cheap or not. Extending the oil filter AND oil is not maintenance. 5k filter only, 15k oil. Mobil 1, Fram long filter.
With the number of cars though (My camry takes the same filter as the prius) I can upgrade the filter if I buy a case (wix) vs individual fram same unit cost. Just my experiences. DIY is easy with the oil valve and simple ramps.

Glad you've been lucky with the Fram. I was too for many years, but what I saw, and what is also confirmed on this site made me switch to Purolator: Oil Filters Revealed

If I was still putting Frams in, I think I'd move to 500 miles instead of 5000! ;)

No doubt there is some truth to the fram since they aren't really in the filter business. Like every other company they cut corners eventually. It doesn't mean any other filter won't fail either. As I said I can buy Wix filters (yes a better quality) in the case for the same as Fram single so I'm moving that direction. Not to beat the filter thing further I've had mine tested and the oil several times. No problems going 15k on Mobil 1 changing filter at 5k (back to the thread subject) and it's been tested. What anyone else does is a guess until you have the oil tested.

I go longer than 5k, but the color of the oil is not an indication of anything.

Depends on the oil. Regular oil, yes 5k. Synthetic longer. Color is not an indicator but you can judge if you check it often. It's an indicator of material in the oil and needing to be changed. Having it tested is the only way and tells you the breakdown of the oil at a certian mileage. I find I can go longer between oil changes simply changing the oil filter and have gone past 15k (Mobil 1 oil tested at 18k started to breakdown).

I find with the large PL20195 filter and Mobil1, 10K is fine in the Bay Area with my driving cycles.

I roll with the larger Wix Filter and Amsoil 0W30 ... exceed 5k OCI with great confidence in my Prius and Tacoma ...

    same thing with the motorcycles.

Keep my vehicles in tip top,

plus less waste for the universe to contend with ...

piece of my mind and good conscience.

On my 2007 Prius, I go the first to occur of 10,000 miles or 12 months, using Mobil 1 0W-30 and Mobil 1 oil filter. But because I drive so little, so far I always reach 12 months before I reach 10,000 miles.

10K, Mobil 1. Since shortly after new, 195kmiles on my 2004. Last two years with plugin battery which reduces engine run time a lot.
