    Hyvää Huomenta!
    Olet liian ystävällinen.

(In case I got it wrong, I meant to say "you are too kind." I love Finland. Spent 3 weeks in your beautiful country and had a wonderful time.)

    Okay, back to topic now....

I don't really understand the value of these systems, Safety Connect, OnStar, etc. They only work where there is cell phone coverage and if there is cell phone coverage I can call for help without going through Toyota or G.M.

Theft recovery may not always be a good thing, if someone steals my Prius I don't want it back. I would rather fight it out with the insurance company and buy a new one. To many stolen cars have been horribly mistreated and some of the problems don't show up right away. Insurance companies won't cover problems that may show up months later and may have been caused by the car thieves.

My guess is that Safety Connect has a larger cell range than a cell phone. It has more power available and a bigger antenna than a cell phone, plus it may use a signal amplifier.

If the car is stolen or car jacked, it's not so much my car that I want back. It's what might be in the car: briefcase, camera, child, etc.

Thanks for the replies, I don't see anything there I need.

BTW I don't think you can lock your keys in a Prius can you? and if they are going to try to diagnose problems remotely Toyota is going to have to provide a lot more and better training to their telephone answering people.

I'm glad I ordered my car before I was forced to buy a Safety Connect system in order to have the rest of the Adv Technology Pkg.

I had a Chevy with Onstar and the vehicle diagnostics came in handy when I had some problems, just hit the blue button and they will run and forward the report to your dealer helping them solve the problem with the car.

It's free the first year (built into the price) and you can opt out after that. In fact with Onstar you can opt out up front if you want to.

The Safety connect operator woke my step mom after she hit a telephone pole in her Prius. They got emergency crews there faster than if she didn't have it.

    To each their own.

Sorry your step mom had a problem, hope she is going to be OK. Hitting a pole with your car can't be any fun.

She's fine, pretty much walked away from it. They fixed the car with about 16K in damages. The car seems fine now.

There is a way to lock the doors and have the key fob inside the car. To do it accidentially would be difficult but not impossible.

I didn't know it could be done by accident unless the fob had a dead battery. I do lock mine in the car sometimes when I travel, but I do it on purpose. I hide the mechanical key and put the extra fob in a metal can and keep it hidden inside the car. A dedicated and well trained thief would have no problem finding my "hiding place" but fortunately the Prius is not a tempting target.

Would you mind telling us how it could be done by accident? The SKS is a fairly frequent discussion topic and the information might save someone from the "keys locked in car" experience.

You'll notice the note that says: "2 Smart Key helps prevent vehicle lock-out."

In other words, they'd have remote door unlock, except you don't need it, because you can't lock your keys in the car in the first place. It's just a bullet point to make them look more comparable to OnStar.

I've used SC to call police to respond to collisions. I just keep driving and it seems to take a long time to get a connection, certainly longder than dialing a phone.
