Hi all: I just got a second letter from Toyota corporate in the mail taking me to task for not bringing in my car for the floormat recall.

I hate bringing up old/bad subjects....and I did look (sort of) before this posting....but nothing changed, right?

"We don't want no new stinkin' floormats?"

One poster got new black rubber all-weather front floormats and posted photos. I for one was unimpressed and will take my chances with the old all-weather floormats as well as the unmodified accelerator pedal. IMO cutting off the bottom of the pedal is not much better than using plastic cable ties to secure the floormats - both service actions seem like something a DIYer strapped for cash might try.

Hey, Patrick: You are right (as always! :)). Thanks for the correction....it's actually to modify the pedal, because of the floormats! :)

If the old is good enough for you....:D

132k and no problems. I like things just as they are and have no intention of letting anyone mess with it.

I received the notice as well. It seems pointless to me. If you have the correct floor mats (like I do), and they are properly secured with the clips to the floorboard (like mine are), then having the pedal whittled on for no valid reason seems just plain silly and paranoid. Also, this is the first car I've ever had that even had clips for the mats.

Yea, got my letter yesterday. They can send me letters all they want, not having mine done.

Got the notice as well. There are a few other regular maintenance things I'm considering going in for. I might have the recall work done or I might ask the Service Manager to explain how the work makes the non-issue any better.

All PC'ers agree - when it comes to the pedal ... more length is better

It's a CYA action. The service manager said that if I declined the mod and then had a problem, I would have no recourse against Toyota. This after I tried to explain to him 3x that I'd checked my mat and the unmodified pedal did not come close to the mat.

This whole floor mat issue looks phoney to me. I don't know, I pick up this month's issue of Car and Driver yesterday at the Doctor's office, and they have an article "grading" the different car companies for their models this year. I didn't get into the details, but Toyota got a D, Honda got a C- , GM got an A-, Ford got a B. Maybe the UAW is trying to fight WWII again.

We recycled the letter from Toyota.

We have the original rug mats, properly anchored, with Exactmats on top of them (the Exactmats have those long, pointy spikes to hold it in place). Never an issue.

"No, you may not shorten my gas pedal. I can barely reach it now!"

Even though I thought it wasn't necessary, I had the work done. If I ever sell the vehicle, a potential buyer might believe the hype and be concerned about it. Also, even though it's unlikely, I wouldn't want my insurance company finding out that I didn't have the recall performed. They might raise my rates!

After having it done, it really isn't such of a big deal. The length of the pedal has no effect on my driving, and doesn't look bad shorter. I never look at the floor anyway when I brake!;)

As part of the recall, they also reprogrammed the computer relating to the brakes. This was a surprise to me, because I didn't think it was included in the recall. When I asked specifically about it, I was told "the updated software is designed to shut the car down if the accelerator is pushed down 30% or more along with the brake at the same time." So, maybe this isn't such a bad idea.

PS I still got the letter in the mail even after having the work performed...annoying! I guess they were operating on the info based on my initial refusal to have the work performed, and hadn't updated my file!

The potential buyer, once s/he owns the car, can take it to his/her local Toyota dealer to have this pedal modification work done. The recall does not have an expiration date.

Please say more about this ECU reprogramming. Do you have the repair invoice available, if so what exactly was written regarding this? Thanks.

I had them do the recall when I had some work done on my 07 about a month ago. Its free, and they did a nice job just took about 2 inches off the bottom and rounded it off nice. And it does not make it shorter to reach. And since I use 2 mats also what could it hurt?

And yesterday I got the same notice imploring me to have it done. I guess its easier to just send it out to eveyone in there owner database then actually check to see who had it done.

I just recycled my letter. I have the standard mats, properly secured. The letter clearly states that there is no recall for that configuration.

we got them on the 08 prius and 08 hycam. already refused it on the hycam when it was in for warranty work. they made me initial a 'customer refused' statement or they wouldn't work on it. honestly, there is about 3" between the bottom of the pedal and the mat. rediculous. thank you, uncle sam. unintended acceleration. talk about a clusterf***! plus, i figure, every time you let a dealer work on your car, there is a good chance they will break something else!

My feelings exactly, bisco. My mat has the 2 hooks in the floor that goes thru the openings in the mat, so that's secure, and like you say, there is a good deal of space between pedal and mat.
Plus, I totally agree and was afraid that after they did some reprograming of the system, something would be messed up!

It's funny, the service man that I worked with for that oil change (my regular service mgr. was on vacation) almost made it sound like a hard threat, that Toyota could not be held responsible!!! Imagine a man trying to intimidate a woman in a car service department...
Oh, well- Good luck to us all with this mat problem.

Yes, I know this. However, it isn't a selling point if a potential buyer thinks they will have to take care of this.

Under the section describing the floor mat recall, one of the things listed on the invoice was the following: "recalibrate computor with updated software". At first I thought it was a mistake. I was very puzzled, so I asked them what that was all about. The service rep then told me that the recalibration which was performed "was designed to shut the car down if accelerator is pushed down 30% or more along with the brake at the same time." I wrote their exact words down on the invoice, so that I would be able to remember for sure.
