Bino your car was unbeatable. Rims, JDM headlights, carbon fiber roof, lowered, tints, shark fin, tinted fogs and taillights. It all just worked. Loved them all.

Ok, how do you disassemble the taillight, specifically, lol. I tried searching for a detailed thread on this but came up emptyhanded. I want to weigh my options and assess my skill before I commit myself. Thanks!!

bino... awesome mods! thanks for the great ideas!

I wanted to have the taillights off so i can wrap the film around the edges. to remove the taillight, just pop off the 2 plastic panels then reach in there to feel for 2 long bolts (one towards the top that you can see and one towards the bottom). Just remove the nuts on those 2 bolts and the taillight will come out. Once out, just unclip the wire harness.

Xenon, I can't get over how well the red tints match your magnetic gray car. This why I am so inclined to try this mod.

I did notice you wrapped the film around the edge of the headlight, but did any part of the film get tucked into the car (so that disassembly would have been the only way to install it the way you did)?

the film is tucked top, bottom and the outside. personally, i would not wrap it with the taillights on the car, as it is a lot more difficult (sometimes impossible) to tuck the edges.

i had to roof professionally done. it's quite hard to wrap a roof without getting millions of air bubbles, so thought i'd save myself the headache and frustration.

it's pretty subtle on a dark gray car, but i love it and would definitely do it again:D

Quick question. I really like what you did and I was wondering if the smoke film is the sticky type like the windows tinting one or the soft rubber one that will be removed by an automated car wash.

I had some bad experiences using the second type and I want to make sure before I even look in to this.

    Thanks a lot!

Good looking tail lights. I never was a fan off all the chrome looking plastic.

Can you ell any difference in the brake/tail light brightness?

svitale75.. i got the film from metrodecal.com (i'm sure there are lots of companies online that sell them) it's meant for headlights and taillights so it will not come off in a carwash. It's thicker than window tint so you can heat it up with a blow-drier or heat gun to conform it to the shape of the taillight.

xs650.. yes, the brightness differential is still quite obvious. plus, the top LED portion is only used for brake light.

with there being so many prius running around, it's nice to have something a little different:rockon:

I know the metrodecal tail-light film has a sticky adhesive, so just how reversible is the tail light wrap? Do you need to use a knife/blade to scrape it off like a window tint? It's hard to imagine a material that adheres to the light well without needing excessive force peel off...

EDIT: Hey Xenon, what do you think about instead of doing Red/Smoke/Red tail light pattern, I did Red/Clear/Red? Like this style BMW:

I looked at the pictures of your car for like 15 minutes and after tilting my head up and down I think I realized the part I don't like is your Smoked middle section. I think it would look better if I left it clear. My question then becomes, does Metro Decals sell a completely clear film for the taillights (that is the same material as the red out kit)? Do I even NEED a film since I want it the same as the stock color. My main concern doing no middle film is that the 2 outer red films will be raised and may look weird since the whole unit won't be flush.

    THANKS!!!

it's really up to you and what you like. personally, i prefer the middle section tinted. the film is thin so if you want to leave the middle clear, you won't need put film on that section.

it is also easy to take off. when i sold my volov SUV, the headlights and taillights were all tinted. it took about an hour to take everything off (total of 6 fairly large pieces). just heat up the tint with a hair drier or heat gun and peel. there will be some leftover adhesive which you can remove fairly easily with some sticker remover (i think it's call 'goo-off' or something that that).

it's better to leave the middle section clear or smoke tint as the reverse light is there. if you tint it red, your reverse light will be red as well: which means that other drivers cannot tell you're backing up.

    AeroTect

Would anybody be interested in trying out the Aerotect colored vinyl? From other car forums I've heard it's more glossy, thinner and clearer than most brands. I'd only be comfortable going for the true, clear red like in the picture of the BMW I posted before. I'm aware that example is actually glass and not film but that's more along my lines. I really don't like the translucency and pinkish hue or dark smoked red of most of the more common brands like metrodecals and rvinyl. It covers up the detail of the light fixture and you can tell they are films. I was wondering if the Aerotect product is actually any different. Thanks

All of these brands are most likely produced by 3M anyway.

That being said, i'd go with what is cheapest, or who has a proven track record of great customer service - Lamin-X.

I'd stay away from rockblocker, i've had bad experiences with their customer service in the past.
