Are the hankook h727 tires as good as people say they are?

I am looking at these tires as well as an upgrade. Did you suffer any mileage hit? How much tread do you have left after 40/ 50K? I will be driving 110 miles per day beginning next month and need a long lasting tire that is quiet, handles well in the bay area rain downpours but don't want to take more than a 2mpg hit over the OEM's.

    Thanks,

4-6mpg hit new tires. That is common but the mileage comes back up after about 10k. There is lots of tread left after 50k. I'm told over 20k left. Rotate check align (free with my purchase) every 5k with oil filter (only) change. Balance 15k with oil change. All mine is freeway driving with 4mi to my house. So Cal area driving in the rain they handle well. Inflate to 40/38 during the summer and 36/34 rain. Car with 40k on them is the same even wear lots of tread left. (didn't measure depth). Both 07 touring.

I have Kuhmo Solus on my 06. Seems to be the same mpg hit. I think the same quiet but harder tire. 80k tire.

LOTS of tire comparison threads (not trying to start another)

I am in a real quandry re tires. My OEM's (30,500 miles) have tread remaining, but with winter (snow) approaching, I need the best traction possible. I have read Consumer Report's July 10 issue on mileage tires, and have checked Tire Rack. Today I spoke with a local tire dealer and they recommended Nokian all-season tires (Nokian eNTYRE).They said the Michelin Hydroedge are great in wet weather, but poor in snow. CR recommends the Hankook H727.

    I could use suggestions.

I got the Hankooks today. Go to Discount Tires and work a deal with them(say Sears has them on sale for $79.99). I got mine for $400 out the door w/tax and install. Then you go to Hankook's site and print out the rebate form to get $40 back. I also got the extra sipping done, cost me 7.50 each tire.

As for handling, it's quieter then the OEM tires. The OEM tires kept on hydroplaning but these seemed to perform a lot better in the little rain we just had today. So far I have taken a hit on mpg but I have only driven on them for 8 miles.

    Wth is the "extra sipping"?

Yeah, got a pretty heavy mileage hit - but haven't had the chance to really drive em along my "baseline" work route yet. Mpg down to the 45's or so... But then again, I was carpooling some friends around, so I wasn't hypermiling as heavily as I would have like...

I am really disappointed with my Hankook H727s. Down to the wear bars in 23k miles! They sure were great in the snow though, while they lasted. I replaced them with Uniroyal Tiger Paw TR's because they were cheap.

Man, it seems like the rolling resistance is massive compared to my old integritys - even at 60 PSI :/

Kinda close to being in de-acceleration instead of gliding when i'm actually gliding. Still breaking in the tires though... so hopefully it'll go up.

Sipings are the slits in the tire tread. They help to squish water away from the tire to give better traction in wet conditions.

    Mileage -
    47mpg, 43mpg, 45mpg at 200 miles

I recently replaced the stock tires on my 2009 prius (regular model, not the touring model) with the Hankook Optimo H727's. I bought them from Discount Tire which will install slightly different tire sizes than stock in the p195/60r-15 size (I believe, I'll have to double check). It was the closest size to the stock size, the same height as stock they said but a few mm wider. I'll note that they told me one price on the phone then told me another price in person, silently adding in a $50 "tire warranty" thing without saying anything about it until I asked specifically why the price was different, so they're kind of shady.

I live in Minnesota and wanted something that would have the max traction I could get in ice and snow, but that also wouldn't require changing tires in the spring/fall like getting dedicated winter tires would. As other people have mentioned, consumer reports tests say that these tires actually beat some of the winter tires they test for traction in snow and ice (it used to be you couldn't compare different categories, but a few years ago they started rating them all on the same criteria). I don't 100% trust consumer reports review (or any reviews really, lol) but tire rack gave them good ratings to so I thought I would give it a shot.

Plus - car wanders less with new tires - don't need to spend attention microadjusting the steering to keep the car going straight. The car doesn't plow toward the shoulder as quickly if you let go of the steering wheel either (my alignment is probably slightly off, but I didn't have the alignment done so it's the same between the new and old tires).

It's not snow/ice season yet so I can't speak to that, unfortunately.

There are some drawbacks to these tires that I hadn't expected.

The car used to be more responsive - went around corners faster, responded sooner to changes in the steering wheel. It's not a "big" thing, but I did notice it it was more fun to drive. The steering was

responsive, though not necessarily precise. But with the new tires it's not as responsive. It's closer to

    driving a van or something.

However - it's definitely possible that less wandering and less responsive are related, and that a stable ride comes from less responsive steering, and more responsive steering drive needs more attention to keep the car going straight. What I can say for sure is that it doesn't hug the corners as much as it used to...not sure that a horrible thing or anything, just something I didn't expect. I noticed that in Consumer Reports rating the h727's only got a middle rating for handling...but so did all their other top 8 tires except the Michelin HydroEdge, so not sure if other tires would have been any better of a choice.

The tires are new so who knows, but so far the dry braking distance seems like it's not quite as good.

The reason I wanted to post was mileage. I was getting 47.0 mpg from the trip computer before I changed tires. In the first 100 miles or so that dropped to 43mpg, however now that I'm up to 200 miles (I might have reset it at 100 miles) the mileage is back up to 45mpg, I've been watching it creep back up, 44.5, 44.6, 44.7, etc. This is all just my normal around town driving routes driving in the same way I drove before the tire replacment.

I'll try to remember to write back when I get more mileage on them to see if they go back to 47.0, just wanted to say that I had seen a post before claiming the mileage was affected more dramatically (like 42mpg or something) and I haven't found anything extreme like that to be the case after the first 200 miles - I did see a slightly dramatic drop right away but the mileage has quickly gone back up after some breakin.

P.S. The tire place said the filled the new tires up to 35psi, whereas before I was running them at 42psi. After a few hundred miles I'll try putting them at 42psi again and see how that goes.

Update: At 282 miles (same air pressure in the tires, nothing added), the average mpg was up to 45.9mpg (basically 46mpg). Unfortunately, I wanted to do further comparisons but the weather has turned dramatically colder (like from high's in the 90's to high in the 60's) so a drop in mileage could just as well be the temp as it could be the tires. But right now it looks like the absolute worst case for me is a 1.1 mpg drop after the first few hundred miles. Would try adding air pressure or tracking it up to 1,000 miles which both might also affect it, but with much lower temps I don't think it would be an accurate comparison - if anyone runs across this next summer and wants to know, send me a private message or ask in this thread and I'll try it out. :)

Paul, your reduction in handling and less precise response is likely due to the reduction in tire pressure. Driving on my 15s at 35 psi drives me nuts. Mpg takes a dive and feels like I'm riding on marshmallows! Air them up to 40 psi or higher and see if that helps.

I don't have them on my Prius, but they were original equipment on my mother-in-laws "07 Saturn Aura. She has 54k on the car now and had to replace one because of a blowout. The new on now has about 6k on it and when it was installed, there was not much difference in it and the ones that had 48k on them. Those tires are barely worn @ 54k. I would recommend them. I wouldn't doubt she will get close to 100k out of them.

My H727 experience: mushy, look at other tires.

H727s were okay in almost every other respect, but they feel dangerously unstable at high speeds and mushy at low speeds (I agree with PaulRivers here). I had a small mpg hit - went from 52.2 to 51.2, but the outside temperature dropped at the same time, so I'd say probably no hit.

I would not buy again. See my linked review above.

BTW Paul, if your steering is pulling you to the side, it's time to cough up a few bucks and get the alignment. :)

After blowing through two sets of Goodyear TripleTreds I went with the 727's. In comparison to the TT's-- snow traction is fantastic, wet road traction is slightly below, overall a very good tire. As for other handling traits, in relation to the Integrities which are the worst tires I have ever driven on (tossed after 500 miles), the Hankooks pose no problems. I have hauled massive loads across country several times at speeds in excess of 75mph. Many times emergency animal or vehicle avoidance maneuvers were required and the Hankooks responded without issue. I am due for a new set before winter and will buy the 727's again without hesitation.

I installed the H727's based on the CR review and the very high ratings on Tire Rack. I agree with most of the comments regarding these tires. They are EXTREMELY quiet on almost all types of road surfaces. I really love quiet tires and these are the quietest tires I've ever experienced. Handling is not as precise as I had with my prior tires (Fuzion). The wet traction and resistance to hydroplaning is very good. Now here is something that is really annoying that no one has mentioned. I live in the NYC metro area and on certain roads on Long Island there are multiple striations in the pavement and the tires wobble when on this type of roadway. It's similar to the feeling you get when driving over a steel decked bridge but not as severe. My prior tires were not unidirectional which explains why the tires tend to wobble when on these roads with the striations. Anyway, if I had to do it all over again I don't think I would have purchased these tires. I guess I may be jumping the gun a bit. I want to see how they handle snow and ice.

Actually...my OEM Integerities that came with the car used to wobble all the time. At somewhat random times on the highway the car would shake some - it was *really* annoying. I...don't think my Prius has done that since I got the h727's installed.

With the Integerities my right front tire was really, really worn out when I got them replaced. But the left front and two rear tires were worn out but not nearly as bad.

I wonder if it's the tire itself that's causing the wobbling on striations, or whether maybe the tire was put on slightly wrong or something?

I replied in the other thread, but I feel like I should reply here to - while I would call them relatively "mushy" at low speeds (though it's not a huge deal), I would in no way call them "dangerously unstable at high speeds". I would definitely say the exact opposite - they've become much *more* stable at high speeds. By far I find them *more* stable at high speeds than the previous tires (though see my previous post, maybe one of my previous tires was put on wrong or something).

Honestly...I think calling them "dangerously unstable at high speeds" is ridiculous. They don't respond quite as quickly, but I find they are far *more* "stable" in exchange. I have no idea how someone would try to call them "dangerous" or "unstable"...that's just ridiculous.

I have about 3,000 miles on my H727's. I find them extremely responsive and of course super quiet. No snow experience yet but rain and slimey roads have been no problem for the tires, they are real grippers.
