That's right, the Home of the Honda Rant has been provided a Honda CR-Z to test for the next few days. So far I've only had the chance to put about 7 miles on it, but I will give it props for being fun to drive so far in Sport mode. Eco mode is kinda meh, though. Full report to come soon!

Yea . . . and with that Honda orifice-like grill, that's a lot of suck.

So, is it the 6 Speed or the CVT? I test drove both and preferred the CVT. I thought it felt more peppy than the 6 Speed. I still want one, but will wait till the prices drops a bit and I have the cash on hand to purchase one. I love that white they have, looks like it would match my Prius real nice....

I really do like the look of the front grill and the car. Of course, I am a former CRX-HF driver...so I may be biased.

Not intersted. I think owning 1 hybrid (per person) is enough. 1 sports car and 1 hybrid is a good combo.

I totally agree. A Lotus Esprit and a Prius in the family. Looking to buy a 2010... 0% financing available now...

Well, if I were a billionaire and collected cars, I'd have the CR-Z in my collection. I like the styling, especially the rear of the car. I like the fact that it is a hybrid, although I'm not a huge fan of Honda's IMA.

    I. hate. you. There are none in my area for test drives!! I did manage to get some "seat" time in it and I like it.

First impressions... the fit and finish isn't that great. Why? Those are MASSIVE door/dashboard panel gaps. Even the Insight has smaller gaps. Not sure how that passed the design stage.

Other than that, it looks fantastic (esp. the blue gauges) and some nice touches like the rear compartment lights (Even if we don't have rear seats).

I'd like to know how it drives (did you get the CVT or 6MT?), how it handles, visibility, cargo capacity (it seems fairly large with the rear seats down).

A two-seater Honda Insight with worse mileage, what's not to love?

I have no idea what the story is with this thing and what would actually compel a person to buy it. I'm sure it is more fun than a Prius to drive but that says little!
In this car those "rear seats" never come up ;)

This vehicle should have been aborted along with the key project team put out of work.

Trivia question and it's not a trick one:
Who wins, me when the light goes green in my 04 Mazda MPV with my kids in the back laughing at the guy in the CRZ or the guy in the CRZ?

There is nothing sporty about a car this slow :)

Danny, this is awesome!!! Now we have a PC-er, and of all people, You! to provide us with an objective review of the CR-Z from the perspective of someone that is accustomed to driving a Prius. Very nice! I am eagerly looking forward to reading your ten page comprehensive review (please include graphical data and diagrams on pages 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, ...) !!! :)

(you can have a lot more fun in a car with a good suspension than a car with a huge engine - I watch all these guys in cars with huge horsepower, take off when the light turns green, and at the corner I'm on their bumper because they don't know how to drive - you can save a lot of fuel by slowly accelerating and then maintaining as much momentum as possible through the corners)

You don't need horsepower to have fun as the Miata MX-5 has shown us.

Remember, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

IOW, what's the fun of a 400hp sports car if you break the limit in 2nd gear?

Nice looking lil car, but I still think the IMA is useless on it! All it does is add weight, cost and complexity for 35mpg's? Dump that stuff, give it a peppy engine and you'll have a fast lil car that still gets around 30mpg for thousands less!

Doesn't even sound that tight, though. From Edmunds:

Again, I just don't see the point. If you want a sporty car that will blow this thing out of the water without trying get a Miata. That is a true sports car albeit not a terribly fast one (though much faster than this), but truly sport-tuned.

The problem is Toyota totally ruined the Hybrid Market! Now everything that has a Hybrid badge on it is expected to get 50+ MPG!

Honda totally missed the Marketing mark on this vehicle! They should scrap the Hybrid badge and market it as an economical 2 seater with electric assist to improve fuel effeciency!

Face it, It's not a sports car, by Sports Car standards because it doesn't produce 200HP! It's not a hybrid by Hybrid standards because it doesn't get 40+ MPG.

What it does do is provide a small, economical, fun to drive, 2 seat grocery getter for under $24K! And that's how Honda should have marketed it... BTW, those two indents where the back seats should be are the perfect size to carry a few grocery sacks without having the vittles rolling around the car!

Um, getting to that limit. And any decent 400hp sports car can break most local limits in 1st gear (though it's been too long for me to remember the top speeds in each gear in my Talon).

When I lived in CA and could get out in the middle of the state where it was mostly empty, I'd routinely destroy the speed limit in the Talon. But it was also fun on normal streets. A 0-60ft time of 1.5sec is fun any time, trust me ;-)

And my Talon wasn't that particularly fast, as I still had stock cams, and it accelerated pretty slowly. Some guys I know with Talons had them tuned right with decent cams, and they could snap you back in your seat in any gear - mine only gave you a sore neck and pounded your kidneys in 1st and 2nd.

You don't NEED hp to have fun, but lots of it sure helps ;-)

I'd so like to have the time, money, and SPACE to finally build a new engine for my Talon and get it back on the road. I'm about to get realistic and pull the plate and take it completely off my insurance, as a rebuild is probably years away, and I'm tired of paying for it being parked.

But yeah, a 400hp sports car and a Prius ARE a good mix.

This CRZ might even BE fun to drive. But as an overall package, it fails at everything, excels at none.
