I'm not an EE but I've worked in the electronics field for my entire life. LED's do not emit noise, on or off. That's a crazy statement.

OP has got great mod and details, and I must say thanks first!

I've got to clear one thing lil bit.

OPs Lumen (brighness) explanation is (unintentionally) wrong or misleading. Brightness of a whole light device can not be aggrigated per smd. As per wikipedia...Rather its a measure of the power of light perceived by the human eye, again, for the entire bulb with X number of smd/led.

Simply...bulb mdf should know the lumen count of given bulb. or we, as user, can compare one with another and find which one is 'brigher'.

Yeah I know I screwed up on that one. The brightness explained on that auction is actually wrong regarding the brightness of 1210 LED when compared to the 5050 LED. The 1210 LED are the same as 3528 LEDs. They are 1/3 brightness and power consumption of 5050 LED Who Cares, 3528 LED Or 5050 LED Diode? I should have went with more densely packed 5050 LEDs. I will be changing my parents 2006 Sienna's interior lights with total of 310 5050 SMD LEDs. I'm anticipating it to be even brighter than my Prius.

I think that's far too bright than it should, this is of course a matter of preference.
Considering safety, a nice relaxing environment and my 15 months old son sleeping on the back , the only useful place for me to have it could be the side and back door.
On the other hand, they should fit with the rest, so I wouldn't mix bright white for the doors and the original for the rest of the car.
Nevertheless this is a nice thread and the job done was excellent. Congrats on that!

Don't the normal bulps gradually increase in brightness when you approach the car? How is that covered with leds? they just jumped on?

The function works the same, although the LEDs are quickly to "brighten" when you walk towards the car and quicker to dim when you close the door.

There are extremely dim 6000k LED lights to extremely bright 6000k LEDs and everything in between. You can always dim the lights by sandwich a thin white paper between the LEDs and lens cover. Toilet paper does the job perfectly. Or, you could partially cover the lens with tape. However, you cant brighten up dim lights without replacing them. Also, the visor lights work perfectly as dim lights. The only down side to bright interior lights is the pupil adjustment from the pitch black interior to the bright lights. I am used to it so it doesn't bother me that much anymore.

It dims and brightens the same way as the OEM bulbs. these LEDs have voltage tolerance but not as much as the OEM bulbs. That's why they dim and brighten faster than the OEM bulbs.

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread when I ask: How in the world is all of this done by putting in LEDs? I only know how to take a bulb out and put a replacement in. How does the number of LEDs, size of the area, etc. have to do with anything? Obviously, I know nothing about this but it sure sounds like fun.

Basically, I'd like to know a step by step process. Maybe take the overhead interior light as an example (and I'm not exactly sure how that comes apart).

These LED thingies just *replace* the current bulb - so it as simple as replacing any bulb.

That said, I so worry that they could come on, distract a driver, cause a chain accident, close a freeway, causing more cars to go to fill a different freeway, then have yet one more Prius with bright interior bulbs flash, and in-effect, shut down an entire city - possibly killing or maiming several people.

These things seem dangerous and scary... I am afraid, and suggest the moderators remove this thread...

I worry about the traffic light cameras flashing at people causing temporary blindness, ran into a crowded restaurant killing 5 families while they're eating their dinner, shut down an entire intersection. Those lights and cars are dangerous. I vote that all traffic camera lights and all cars made illegal. It would solve the global warming problems and save million lives that would have been lost due to traffic accidents. We should go back to horses and coaches. Ohh wait, we still need bright interior lights.
Anyway, I'm about to change my parent's 06 Sienna's interior lights. I'll post some pictures

It's been about 7 months since I've done the mod on my parents 06 Sienna and they love it. Here are the pictures comparing a stock 98 Sienna to my 10 Prius and to the 06 Sienna and to 35watt HID headlights.
I used a kit lens for the camera because it's the most popular DSLR lens. All the consumer to low end prosumer DSLR cameras come with 18-### with f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. Those with LED interior lights and own a DSLR can set the camera to the following settings and compare the brightness of their interior lights with what can be done.
I set my camera to the following settings
    ISO-1000
    shutter speed - 1/32 sec
    aperture - f/3.5
    focal length - 18mm
    exposure time 1/30 sec
    flash - no
    white balance - auto

BTW C3PO, do you know how to take a picture of a moving car? You know, where the wheels are spinning, background is blurred, but the car is in focus.
