I purchased the following items and will be installing them into my Prius II.

    Kenwood DIM KIV-BT900 Head Unit
    • Nice unit but presets are software and are accessed from menu. Need to program so that the remore << & >> keys scroll presets.
    Kenwood KCA-SR50 Sirius Interface Unit
Siruis Connect SCC1 Tuner and Antenna
    • Easy install and both Interface and Tuner fin in the dash under the radio.
    Metra 99-8226B Radio Housing Kit
    • Happy with this kit. Easy to install.
    ASWC Stearing Wheel Interface
    • Connected and worked the first time. No Delay. Works as good as the origional remote/radio
    Metra 70-1761 Wiring Harness
    • Saved lots of time and made install very clean and allowed me to solder in the home than install in vehicle.
There seems to be little information on the ASWC as well as installation of the Sirius Antenna so hopefully I can provide some more details as I document my findings on this post.

2010 Toyota Prius model II Head Unit Upgrade document

    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-toyota-prius-model-ii-head-unit-upgrade.html sticky by spiderman

    Metra 99-8226B Dash Kit Instructions
    https://metradealer.com/files/products/INST99-8226B.pdf

Note that the document by spiderman tells you to remove the part with the cupholder first, than the part around the shifter. The Metra Dash Kit says to do the part around the shifter first. I used Spidermans method and found that lifting the cupholder part first removes both the cupholder and shifter trin at the same time as one assembly. Theer was no need for me to sepperate the two.

Once the radio is removed, you will see there are five connections.

    1. Antenna cable
    2. 20 Pin 8215 Shell Steering Wheel Interface
    3. Power and Front Speaker Connector
    4. Rear Speaker connector
    5. A connector that goes to the AUX jack in the center compartment. (This will not be used)

The Metra 70-1761 Wiring Harness contains the lebeled connectors that plug into items 3 and 4 above. The ASWC will connect to the power in item 3 and Pins 6, 7 and 8 of the connector in item 2.

I assume it is impossible to purchase the male version of the 20 pin 8215 Shell connector. This is the jack that you need to connect to and do not have a connector to access the wires. Many people wish to keep this connector on so they can eaasily replace the factory Radio so you will see some creative methods to access these wires as you search through this site.

I ended up purchasing some resistors as they are cheap and have sturdy leads that fit into the 8215 Shell 20 Pin connector. I simply cut the leads off the resisters and soldered them onto the three wires that needed to interface with this harness. I also used shrink tubing to keep the three wires from touching each other outside the connector. See blurry photo.

After inserting the leads into the proper position; I taped the assembly with electrical tape to keep them together.

    ASWC

    - The video in this post: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ronics/75036-metra-axxess-aswc-interface.html

    - Instructions: http://documents.victorytechnologies.com//documents/product/23230.pdf

    - 8215 Shell (20 pin connector) Wiring Instructions: http://documents.victorytechnologies.com/documents/vehicle/10957.pdf

    Metra 70-1761 Wiring Harness

    - Metra Electronics - Products

    - The Large Connector has the Power, Ignition, Ground, Power Antenna*, Amp Turn on, Amp Gnd, Dimmer, Phone Mute, Right Front, Left Front.

    - The small connector has Right Rear, Left Rear, Illumination.

    - The color codes on the Metra and the Kenwood Wiring harness are the same with the exception of the Right Rear which is Violet on the Metra and Purple on the Kenwood.

    - The color code on the ASWC also uses the same colors for the Ground, Ignition (called 12 V accessory wire on the ASWC)

    * Note that the stubby whip antenna at the rear of the Pruis is not optimal for AM or FM reception. To make up for this there is an amplifier built into the antenna that requires power. The Power Antenna wire on the Metra 70-1761 Wiring Harness is the wire that needs to have power when using the radio. Most radios will have a power antenna line to power the amplifier.

Do not purchase an FM Booster amp and put it in line. Amplifiers need to be places as close to the antenna as possible in order to amplify the signal and not the noise that is introduced on the line before it gets to teh after market boosters. They just don't work.

Satellite Antenna Install (took me 45 minutes and used plastic putty knife)

    - Antenna Location do's and don'ts - SIRIUS Satellite Radio - Sirius Radio Activation, Activate Sirius Radio, Sirius Satellite Radio Activation (see
Routing the Antenna Cable from the Windshield at the bottom of the document.
    . o This worked perfectly http://www.sirius.com/wo/i/antennainstall/CoupeWireInComing.gif
    . o This also worked well http://www.sirius.com/wo/i/antennainstall/CoupeWireUnderWStripping.gif

Note I had to route the cable around the small side window as well. I drew a line in the picture where I routed the coax.

Here is where the coax is exposed in the driver side door...

    My Questions:

    1. The Sirius Antenna should have 2" of metal around it to form a good ground plane for best Sattelite Reception (least amount of drop-outs). Installing between the existing antenna and the rear hatch does not allow enough space for this ground plane. I would like to install it abobe the antenna. I am wondering how to remove the antenna to snake the antenna wire in where the antenna is mounted. I assume this is possible as others have installed the Shark Antenna. Any info would be appreciated.

    2. Not to crazy about the Metra 99-8226B Radio Housing Kit. The plastic looks a bit cheap and teh pocket benetrh the DIN radio has two hols in the rear. (Not sure why they designed it this way). I believe the only other option is the scosche dash mount kits. Are these any better?

    3. Wondering where the best place to mount the USB jack. It comes from the rear of the head unit. I would love a USB jack that I could mount on the dash or near the lighter jack or maybe in the compartment that has the AUX in jack. Anyone have ideas on this?

I hope to post some good information, but this will take some time. Yesterday I soldered teh wiring harnesses together and thats as far as I got. I will probably spread this out over 4 weeks and as you can see above I have several questions to make sure I proceed with the best solution. Thanks for your wish for good luck.

There's nothing special about the Sat antenna - look to previous posts. It will even work on top of the Kenwood - but not great,

The front Squaker (speakers) is an easy spot with great reception....

I use the ASWC with my Kenwood KDC-BT945U. It works great.

The only problem with installation was my confusion between the green/orange wire and the orange/green wire. Other than that, it autodetected and worked perfectly.

OK - The Green/Orange on the ASWC's two wire cable connected to the 3.5mm connector (specific to Kenwood installs only) will connect to pin 7 on the Vehicles 8215 Shel Connetor (20 Pin Connector). I guess the benefit to being color blind is relying on aspects other than color codes.

I too am interested in hearing if you experience a delay on the steering wheel control due to the ASWC, but I will find out for my self soon enough. (and will report out here)

I assume you didn't have to upgrade the ASWC firmware using the optional special USB cable. Wondering what upgrades are included in the latest firmware. (It would be great if someone had the pinout instructions to mod an existing USB cable to make one of these.

I have to disagree - With a digital signal, when you get the signal it is perfect. This can be misleading. A properly installed Sirius Antenna will minimize the annoying drop-outs.

I updated the resource section with links from Sirius.com My comment on the 2" ground plane is actually recommended to be 3" on Sirius.com. They do not recommend mounting inside the car or near the rear antenna, and especially in the tweeter location. That may be good for GPS that has many satellites and stronger signals, but it is not ideal for Sirius.

Yes - there are many optimized locations - ideally, you should just drill a hole in the roof...

That said, Toyota places the sat antenna in the dash.

Some have placed it in the dash, others at the squaker - others in the rear of the car.

As stated, you will get *excellent* sat coverage (very few drop outs - unless you are under a bridge, or in a tunnel). I've now installed (3) GPS antennae, and 1 sat (for various radios).

As stated, the best location I have found is at the squaker (ease of install) - using Toyota's docs, you need to pull the dash apart...

Re lag with the ASWC. I don't have any noticeable lag.

There are a couple of things I would say about holding the steering wheel buttons down.

Holding a volume button down causes a too-quick slew of the volume, so instead I will hit the button multiple times.

Also, when playing my iPod, the lower buttons will jump to the next or previous song. (No problem there.) On the radio itself, holding down the corresponding button advances quickly through the current song. From the steering wheel, it jumps ahead multiple songs. I suspect this is a limitation of the radio's remote interface rather than the ASWC.

I don't consider these significant problems. I'm very happy with the ASWC and have zero regrets.

Actually, Toyota does drill a hole in the roof and the XM antenna is built into the base if the stubby whip antenna.

The Antenna you are referring to is the GPS.

I installed my Satellite antenna today as described in the first few posts. It was fairly painless using the plans found on Sirius.com. I also listed the specific links to instructions I used in the first few posts. I am very happy about the install.

Hrmm - so I'm guessing your antenna is working as good as mine ;) How did you remove the roof liner at the rear???

From everything I've seen and dealt with, it's not easy to get to the rear center of the roof... But I've only removed the rear trim at the roof to install a rear cam...

Do you have pics? I'd have chosen that location if I known it was so easy... Can you put both antennae there (in that space)? How long did it take to run it from HU - through side moldings - dash etc?

GPS and Sirrius/XM use identical antennae - I'm curious how Toyota installs an XM - I'd think it was in the dash - as outlined (they have identical specs) in the Toyota doc...

Please post pics of your wonderful installation - it seems you know a lot about the car, and that will help all!!!!!!!!!

    GREAT JOB :D

    rrolff:

I placed the antenna 3" in on the roof Windshield side rather than back hatch. See the update I made to post #3 in this thread.

    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...connect-tuner-sirius-antenna.html#post1197937

The drawings I point you to are exactly what I did. I will post photos in the near future but for now due to limited time I am going to have to refer you to drawings.

The only thing that needs to be removed is a very small portion of teh gasket around the driverd door near the top hinge. This is where I fed the coax through than it tucks neatly under the trim all the way to behind the dash. The Sirius Connect Reciever, that dumb kenwood interface box and the ASWC all fit below the head unit.

I saw someone was using crimp pins to insert into 8215 Shell (20 pin female connector) that the ASWC uses to interface to the Steering Wheel Controler.

crimp pins - Google Product Search

The holes in this connector seem very small. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion on what type of pin I should buy. I can even solder the wires to pins if needed. I woild love to find a three pin connector that is spaced the same way the 8215 is. Since the three wires I need to connect to are all in a row, that would be ideal.

Anyone know the function of the parking sensor wire on the Kenwoor head unit?

    http://manual.kenwood.com/files/4be4997f7d9a4.pdf
(See first wire at the top on page 12)

I left this wire unconnected and everything seems to be working fine. I assumed this disabled some functions while driving, but wasn't 100% sure.

OK, I have updated the first couple of posts with more information and photos. Hope this helps others.
