Driving to work today, was changing from one CD to another with the steering wheel controls, when the current CD indicator started flashing and the error message "CD Error" appeared.

Unlike other, similar threads I've seen, the CDs were all able to be ejected, reloaded, and ejected again, but will not play.

The AWFUL local commercial radio stations are NOT an option for me.

Has anyone had any luck with "fixing" this basically unexplained glitch, or is it remove and repair only?

I haven't heard about this error before. Try disconnecting the 12V battery negative terminal for several minutes to see if that will reset the CD changer. Good luck.

I already figured I'd do that. From what I understand, all I'll have to do afterward is re-set my radio stations and auto window, is that correct?

I found several other threads in which the CD Changer was well and truly dead, and the Dealer or owner (depending on warranty status) had to swap it out. I THINK my car is still under the original warranty . . . . but if it's just a code that needs to be re-set I'd just as soon not waste my time with a Dealer visit.

As always, thanks for your insights.

Well, it was worth a try -- but killing the 12V for 10 minutes did not help. Guess I'll have to mosey down to the Dealer this weekend. Double drat!

Is the car still within it's 36K warranty? If so, the dealer should replace the unit for free.

Yes, it is, and they should.

It's been many years since I owned a car new enough to have any warranty coverage. I am hoping for a satisfactory interaction with the local Dealership, but steeling myself for any possible blood pressure elevating issues. Atkins Kroll Toyota has an opportunity here to make a convert to Dealer Service of me, and I hope they see it that way.

Something similar happened to me from one CD from a four CD boxed set. The other three CDs played fine, but the first one just got "CD Error". I then took it out, ripped it in iTunes, burned it onto a blank CD, and the car stereo reads THAT one no problem. Weird.

Do all CDs get the error? Does the set in the player play elsewhere? If the dealer pops a CD in & it plays you are most likely going to get "can not reproduce the error" then sent on your way.

In my four years of owning the car, this was only the second time this happened to me (the first time was admittedly my fault when I didn't notice it was a DVD I slipped in there).

Final test/action before taking it to the dealer is to run a CD cleaner through it. You -could- have algae on the head in Guam.

Well, ALL CDs failed to play. I thought about cleaning the lens, then decided, since I had found a number of other posts regarding this failure, to leave it alone and see whether I could get a new changer before Hal goes go out of warranty in a couple months.

The friendly people at the Service Counter (which included one of my USAFR squadron buddies) hooked me right up. They have ordered a new unit and will replace for free. I believe it's the first time I have ever received ANY service under an automotive warranty (I have almost always owned, er, more experienced vehicles, but could not resist the deal I got on Hal).
