2010 - Help! Disabling Reverse Beep

    I requested the reverse beep to be changed from the constant dump truck beeping to a single beep when I purchased the vehicle. My sales person said they would have to check and get back to me but never did. I read this entire thread and was skeptical that they would do it. My purchasing dealership in Jacksonville Florida (Coggin Toyota) made the change for me at no cost at my first non-oil change 5,000 service after I stated that no one ever called me back on the subject.
    Hope this information helps with anyone in this area.

    All my local Toyota dealers want at least an hour labor ($50-$85 - one says it takes two hours) to do any programming customization. After contacting Toyota customer service by both phone and written letter, they told me there wasn't anything they could do, that anyone will be charged to have the programming changed. The selling dealership has only now agreed to assume the programming cost wherever I get it done, but it's only because I haven't yet completed the purchase survey and they'll pay for the customization only if I agree to give the dealership all 'excellents' on the survey.

    I guess if I had already done the survey, I'd be paying for the programming changes. As it is, I'm rather doubtful that the selling dealership will really pay for it, though.

    I must say, it hasn't exactly been a pleasant experience trying to get something as simple as having that annoying reverse beep changed to a single beep from the continuous beeping. FWIW, I recommended that the owner's manual be changed to reflect the fact that there will be a charge to have any of the customizable programming changed.

    That is RIDICULOUS. :angry: Did u ask to speak to the manager?

    I went to my local dealer. A tech walked to my car with a laptop. It literally took 5 minutes: 1 minute to boot up the laptop and load the program, 3 min to sync with the car, 1 minute to change the beep and sync back.

    My wife doesn't like the beep but I think it's helpful (granted it's only been 2 days!). Helps make sure you're in reverse with the audible beep which isn't as annoying as this thread made it out to be ;-)

    I called the dealer (Jim Hudson Toyota in Columbia SC) where I purchased my 2010 Prius just four weeks ago and the jerks want $54 to disable the reverse beep. They refuse to do it for free. I guess they figure they got my money so I can get lost now.

    Update: I called the General Manager and complained. He took my name and number and in 10 minutes the service dept called and set an appointment for tomorrow. They will disable the reverse beep - and the seat-belt beep - at no cost to me. But they should have agreed to do this in the beginning.

    That just plain sucks. My dealer gave me the run around too but was in the end able to get them to agree to it. I eventually got a ScanGuage and now can do it myself along with disabling the seatbelt reminder.
    Have you gotten your survey from Toyota yet? If not, call the dealer and let them know you won't be giving them high marks. See if that helps.

    Dear all,

    thanks for to this forum and all the info, I adamantly told my sales rep and the general manager of the Toyota dealership that I would not sign the sales receipt of my new 2010 IV Prius, unless they agreed to change the BEEP when I took delivery of the vehicle, when I showed them the owners manual they said it was a non issue and promptly took care of the issue. No questions/bickering on their end. I watch the service tech come out onto the lot with laptop in hand and he changed the setting within two minutes.

    For ALL future / potential Prius owners, ask the sales rep PRIOR to purchasing the vehicle and this shouldn't be an issues, I'm so GRATEFUL that I read this forum PRIOR to purchase...

    My dealer changed it to a single beep no questions asked at 1200miles after I bought the car. The dealer is Pat Lobb Toyota in McKinnery, Texas.

    Dealer did it for free. If yours wants to charge you, contact your sales guy and tell him you will never be back. Contact all other surrounding Toyota dealers and tell them if they do it for free they have a new customer for service/next purchase. Worked for me.

    For cripes sake! I wasn't even annoyed about the back up beeper until now because I thought it was a good safety feature.

    What idiot decided it should only beep on the INSIDE of the car? :rolleyes:

    If any car needs an exterior beeper it's the Prius. I'm constantly following people strolling down the middle of the parking lot because they can't hear my car coming. How would a child know I'm backing up?

    P.S. I like the seatbelt chimes because nobody is allowed to ride in my car without a seatbelt on - including me. Do the seatbelt chimes work for the rear seats too?

    The dealer here in Anchorage charged $50 to switch the backup beeps to a single beep. Sadly there are no other dealers within 600 miles to see if they would do it for free. I would have paid the extra money to do it myself with a ScanGauge but my wife already had the dealer do it.

    I would send a letter to Toyota and to senior management at the dealership that calmly tells them that this is unreasonable and that you are unhappy, then asks if they intend to do anything about it.

    Crazy. Pat Lobb Toyota in McKinney Texas did it for free an smiled the entire time. I think it took them 2 minutes.

    A big THANK YOU to all of the posters on this thread. Just took my IV into the dealership for its first scheduled maintenance. Wanted to get the beeper changed from constant beeping to the single beep. I was told that it was a safety issue and could not be done. I mentioned that it appeared on page 592 of the owners manual as an option and I guess I would call Toyota Customer Service to see what could be done about it. 5 minutes later the phone rang and they told me it was fixed but it was still a safety issue and that it would revert back to the constant beeping if the 12 volt battery was disconnected. Does anyone know if this truly happens?
    BTW, there was no charge to do it either! :)

    Yes all the optional settings revert to standard settings if you let the 12 volt battery die. There are much worse thing that CAN happen if you let the 12 volt battery die, as well. So don't.

    1) drive your Prius every two weeks, once a week is even better.
    2) be in READY if you plan to use electricity in your Prius, The HV battery recharges the 12 volt battery, and the engine recharges the HV Battery.
    3) Lock your Prius with the Fob, it will let you know if the doors are not all closed.
    4) never jumpstart anything with your Prius, try to never jumpstart your Prius.
