I hate being right. Back in May, James Sikes of "Crazy Prius Acceleration" fame bought himself a Nissan Cube to replace his 2nd Gen Prius. You know, the one engineers couldn't find anything wrong with? As soon as I heard that Mr. Sikes had purchased the Cube, I issued a warning to all Nissan Cube owners to watch out for their resale value. I hope some of them listened to me, because it appears that Nissan has just been "Sikes'd". Not even 6 months after Sikes' purchase, Nissan has announced a recall covering over 2.14 million vehicles worldwide. A problem has been found in the ignition relay on the Cube and over a dozen of Nissan's other models. The failure of the relay causes the engine to stall and the driver cannot restart the car. No word on whether or not the problem was uncovered by a desperate man on a San Diego highway.

That's one way to get from under a car payment.
Then again, the Cube might just get 'stolen' ... hey, it happens.

For the rest of my life (or until Sikes passes - he looks like 12 seconds from death), I will follow which cars he buys and be sure to never buy the same one. He is bad luck.

Can you imagine him now after another recall? He must be going insane! LOL

If the relay fails, wont the car go into neutral, flip over and explode?

Oh GREAT, thanks for the curse Danny! We own a cube too. 09 SL model. Fun little run-about but no the greatest hi-way car due to the aero's or lack thereof :)

    No, thats only with priuses.

The cube first implodes, and then turns into a white dwarf.

Come on now. Blaming Sikes for these new Nissan woes is ridiculous. About as ridiculous as...well, his claim that he couldn't stop his Prius...Oh I get it now...that's the point :):)

A "white Dwarf" refers to an exploding sun, not a vertically challenged person. Just in case.

Never know about those folks in the Bitterroot valley "banana belt".

Has anyone, ANYONE, seen any substantive proof that Sike's was, or was not, faking it.

And now we have the latest news that Toyota has been buying back SUA vehicles since 2006 only on the condition that the sellers maintain complete silence.

No problem there with the Saylors.....

Sure. Substantive proof was presented after the data logger analysis and tear down of the brakes. Short of an eye witness with a video camera riding shotgun, it was about as substantive as you could get.

If you believe, put any faith at all, in the data logger analysis then I'd like to talk to you about buying some land in Florida.

According to the early news from Toyota both the gas pedal and brake pedal had been applied ~250 times. They later they came out and corrected that to mean only the gas (brake..?) pedal had been applied that many times.

Now, as an engineer, I have to ask why a data logging system would or could be used that would "trap" only the events during an SUA incident. Unless, of course, you have reason to suspect the need to log such an event. Personally I tend to think the 250 "count" had more to do with a count rollover restriction due to an 8 bit counter resolution.

    Brake condition....

Unless I'm mis-remembering those results they were deemed inconclusive, the brake rotor and pad condition clearly showed abuse from over-heating. Was the over-heating the result of an SUA incident or Sikes being on and off of the gas and brake pedal...?

    We simply do not know.

The trailing officer made it quite clear that Sikes was using the brakes in an on and off fashion.

I can tell you from personal experience(***) that if you apply the brakes heavily for a period of time they will DEFINITELY began to fade due to HEATING. Get off the brakes for just a few minutes, maybe even 10-15 seconds and when you reapply you will have a higher level of braking "restored".

Might well be EXACTLY what Sikes was doing.

*** Ford country squire SW coming down a steep and curving ski mountain highway outside Wenatchee.

    Additionally...

The traditional implementation of data logging is to have/maintain a record, recording "loop" of system operation, just prior to an accident. In Sikes case it appears that NOTHING happened that would have resulted in the termination of logging in order to preserve the log contents.

Well, I can see how you might interpret the data in this fashion, but only if you deliberately want to distort the results. The results are about as conclusive as you could possibly get, given the limitations of the event loggers. The limitations have been discussed on PC before, and the reason for intermittent use of the brakes was also explained in great detail. As an engineer, I could explain it again, but you, as an engineer, already know this, but for some reason refuse to see the obvious. With your mind made up, I would be wasting our time to try. We have beating this horse before, and it is still dead.

"...only if you deliberately want to distort the results..."

Did you "copy" that from one of the current political ads that accuse without stating or giving a foundation...?

You're a pretty damn poor engineer if you're so unwilling to state, document, the reasons for your own conclusions.

    "..with your mind made up,..."

No, absolutely not, as my statements have made clear, I'm still "neutral" just definding Sikes against those that have made up their minds without ANY substantive evident for a conclusion, either way.

And CLEARLY, the SUA "horse" is far from dead.
