That's right. If you want to get in line (when ever Nissan opens up the line again) for the all electric leaf you're looking at 2012.

Nissan sells out electric Leaf before it hits US showrooms - Yahoo! News

But the article gets better! Nissan plans to begin selling an all electric commercial van in 2014. I can't wait to hear how large THAT battery pack is.

Yeah! Good for them and EVs in general. Let's hope they - or anyone - never tries to play the "but the public doesn't want them" card.
    (I'm talking to you, GM)

I think you're :deadhorse: with that one nowadays. Even the "new GM" has seen the light.

That's great news for the Leaf/Nissan but there's still a long uphill battle to go:

There'll be 20,000 SCARED Leaf drivers not knowing whether they can get to the hospital with their dying child without a range extender.

Is that why they're planning to build an overpriced car with mediocre real-world EV range, no better than average FE when running on gasoline, that only seats 4, and build so few of them that you won't be able to get one even if you wanted one?

    I won't be scared.
    • My job is 3 miles from home, the hospital is 10 miles.
    • I have a prius in the garage next to my leaf.
    • There are these things called ambulances, which come to your house to pick you up and take you to the hospital. After all, not everybody even owns a car.

Zap has some serious quality issues, I hope the Green Vehicle's Triac will do better. They have limited numbers out to customers now in their "early adopter" phase, not sure when general production will start. (check this person's blog for the best info I've found so far).

I saw some Corbin/Meyers Sparrows at an auto show this summer, first time I'd seen them in person. They look pretty good (for a one-person 3-wheeled electric vehicle), but didn't see it in action.

The article is a bit misleading - while Nissan has collected $99 from 20k people who are interested in the Leaf (a pre-order reservation), it's highly unlikely all of them will go all the way through and purchase one.

Does anyone know how many they expect to produce in the first year?

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of mine - have already placed the order for my specific car with a local dealer and in should arrive some time between December and February and am qualified to be part of the EV Project so will be getting a EVSE installed at home on a 2nd meter and have access to the 30min quick chargers if I need them.

2011my world wide production is slated for 50,000 vehicles. Nissan has not announced publically the exact split but that should provide 20,000 for the limited us regional role out. The first north American allocated production leaf is already in Austin. With the low price and yen exchange rate Nissan should have a healthy loss or "investment" on every car sold in the united states. The potential profits and real volume are slated for the 2013my when the leaf and battery pack will be produced in volume in the united states.

I thought that 50k vehicles was the max Leaf production at the Oppama plant?

I will be (pleasantly) surprised if they actually get to that number for 2011 as well as sell 20k Leafs in the USA by the end of 2011.

With those kinds of sales numbers the Leaf would be up at the top of the hybrid sales numbers (excluding the Prius which dominates).

Ahh yes, but the Leaf isn't a hybrid, is it?

    Congrats Nissan!

Maybe GM should scrap the Volt, and just bring back the EV1. Don't they still have the plans laying around someplace?

prelim date (which is greatly estimated since it takes about 3 weeks from factory to dealer) is first half of Jan 2011. so hoping for a 1/11/11 delivery date but sooner would be nice.

    as far as the review part of it would be easy;

Prius still the best option for getting out of town and NO!! the Volt is not even a close 2nd on that.

Zenn; great idea but lacked execution and support. around here i tool around town and take advantage of free plugins but i am in a pretty rare situation.

    now for the 3rd review...
    ...
ok, patience is not one of my strong suits

i personally dont think its premature to say that all have been spoken for. GE plans to buy several thousand so wondering how many they will get. plus i am relatively sure that Nissan overbooked when they took those reservations.

as far as the plant capacity, i believe its around 55K but that is worldwide and there has been talk that the US allotment might be increased because of higher than expected demand??

to be honest with ya; as long as i get mine, i dont care!!

drees you are correct, I misrembered. That is coupled with Nissan's anouncement in mid novemeber that with 20K deposits all the 2011 production is spoken for. My guess is nissan may have a conversion rate calculation and expects the 20K deposits to translate to whatever their N.A. allocation is.

relax. I wanted a review "after" you have driven for a few weeks and got to know the car.

Nissan's concept rendition looks pretty spiffy:

However, It is likely that the van will be an electrified version of the
NV200. It's a whole lot cleaner than the Ford Transit Connect BEV, but
is scheduled for release 2 years later, 2014 vs. 2012.

Ford isn't saying when, if ever, they'll offer a non-commercial version
of the TC BEV. I wonder if Nissan will have the same marketing
    strategy.
