Is buying a COROLLA a better deal than a PRIUS?

I have carried linen presses, a 46 inch TV in the box, loads of stuff moving a friend, and camped in the back of my Prius. Do it in a Corolla? Don't think so.
Glad I bought a used Prius for the same coin as a new Corolla.

All my family and friends thought it was brand new until I told them it wasn't.
Had 60,000km on it and was like a brand new car.

If I let a family member or friend drive my Prius they brag about it for hours.

Yeah, I left that out because I don't know if those rebates are still in effect - I know the federal rebate was cancelled and immediately Toyota lowered the price of the Prius by the same $2000. Even the 2010 is $2000 cheaper than my 2008 was.

Anyway, at $1/L with the rebate factored in, the Corolla and Prius would cost about the same over 300,000km. I doubt the price of gas will stay at $1 so in the near future I'll be ahead.

I have twice in my lifetime driven Corollas- once as a vacation rental car back in the 90's and once for about 1 week 4 years ago while my BMW was in the shop. Both times I asked myself what the hubbub was with these cars. They are crappy roller skates IMO. Even the Ford Escort and Focus were better IMO- both of which cost less than the Corolla. The Prius being my first Japanese car purchase in over 20 years of buying cars, though not exactly "great" in the comfort/handling arena, was/is certainly several standards above the Corolla.

I agree with others who have said that a used Prius is a great compromise between quality and value....maybe even the best available. Value-wise, I am done buying new cars until the EVs have gotten a good foothold.

Please point me to where it is shown that the Corolla is "the most dependable car ever made". Thats a really bold statement.

Sure its reliable, but its still a cheap, ugly, slow, frumpy economy car with no style whatsoever. If all you want is cheap, reliable transportation the Corolla is a GREAT car.

But if you want some style and substance, maybe something thats a little interesting to own and drive there are LOTS of great options for the same money. I would never drive a Corolla, because I enjoy cars. The Corolla is simply a driving appliance.

Mazda 3, Honda Civic, the more fulfilling options are endless.

I'm not a huge Prius fan, but it has some style, its unique, and its fun to drive in its own way with the gizmos and features.

    Ha.

The Corolla is a great car. I think it's a great value. "Better Deal?" well that's pretty subjective. And come on? You're IN P.R.I.U.S. chat. What feedback do you think saying The Corolla is a better deal than the Prius is going to get you?

The "Best Deal" for everyone is the vehicle they would be most happy with, if that's a Corolla, Prius or Honda Fit...so be it...

I think buying, owning and operating a hybrid for most, goes beyond simple comparative economics of ownership and operation.

I mean unless you are peddling a bicycle you are probably going to be able to find something that can get you from point A to point B cheaper than a Prius, if you factor in the total purchase price of a new vehicle. But that really isn't the point....

With the Prius, you enjoy what is currently the best gas mileage available. In the package of a very utilizable hatchback. With a rather impressive array of available options. Add to that, amazingly low emmisions...and you really have a product that has very few competitors..and certainly The Corolla isn't even in the same class.

I see this as nothing more that subtle trolling.

You REALLY want a Corolla? Go get it. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy or keep a Prius...

I decided to delay my hybrid purchase, and I bought and currently own a Honda Fit...which I really, really like. But I don't come in here making Posts...Honda Fit Better Deal than Prius....

Because I have a little respect for the audience that is within a Prius enthusiasts website. And I know that there is a world of difference between a Hybrid and just about everything else offered in the ICE genre.

So yes, The Corolla has been a great vehicle for decades. I think it's IS a great deal today. Nice automobile.

    It's NOT a better deal than a Prius...if you want a hybrid.

I'm a former corolla owner (actually 2). They did the job. Nothing fancy comparing apples to apples. The best statement above was comparing an orange to a tangerine. The corolla's held up as well as my prii are. I expected that from a toyota. I looked at nissan too as they have comparable models. Just depends on what you are trying to do (as it is with all cars you purchase). Don't buy a corolla if you really need a truck. I like the feeling of doing something different with the prius. The are both cars to get from point a to b. If you want fancy or more stuff, you pay more. The camry hybrid is fancier with more comfort but not as efficent as the prius. Don't depend on anyone here to make a decision for you on the type of car for you. From my experience they both are dependable. I maintain my cars very well. I believe I upgraded to purchasing a prius for nothing more than technology and a bit more comfort. Along the same line I thought the camry (I have a non hybrid camry) hybrid was a waste of money. Another thread.
I had corolla's and prii. Both are fine depending on what you want. MPG and cost, get the corolla. The prius is a different kind of fruit.

Correct, as was said before you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

The Corolla is a very dependable car, but I have never heard it touted as the "most reliable car ever made". I have heard that statement made about the Lexus LS sedan, but not the Corolla. The idea that anyone really knows what the "most reliable car on earth" is, is a fallacy. There's no way to really know that, what we do know is that a model is reliable overall, or not. Both the Corolla and Prius are very reliable.

Lots of really ultradependable vehicles out there, many made by Toyota, many not.

I also agree this is a troll...interesting since it's been a member here so long. If it wants a Corolla...let it go buy a Corolla. Its a perfectly fine car.

Amusing thread. I own both. They are 2010 models. When you equip a Corolla to best match a Prius II you will get a difference of about $5000. If more of your driving is city than highway the Prius will easily be the best choice. With the assumption you invest the gas savings, my payback came out to be about 5.5 years. Why did I buy a Corolla? I'm cheap and got a good car. With two homes (a third might be on the way) I'll probably leave a Corolla in the mountains and commute with the Prius. Made sense to me.

We don't need that there either. Unless your forum has a Battlefront, it would be rude anywhere.

Do you know the difference between a Savings Bond and a man? The Bond is guaranteed to mature in 30 years.

    Best of luck.

Looks like the OP definitely has the buyer's remorse. He seems to be struggling within a lot so he unconciousely, oh I mean subconciousely started this fight, I mean thread, trying to let out some steam. Now if he gets banned from the forum because of this behaviour, he'd get his final kick in the butt, which would be enough to make him sell the Prius and buy a Coroder...err...I mean Corolla...

You may (or may not) be correct, in pure dollars and cents terms.

Still, I've driven many a Corolla, and cannot recall ever having had one make me grin. My Prius does that all the time.

In addition, I truly believe that reducing our dependence on fossil fuels is a National Security as well as a National Economic issue. As a patriot and a Citizen/Airman, these issues strike close to my heart. The Corollas all got about 30 MPG (on a good tank).

My Prius gets 50 without any extraordinary driving techniques AND as a Science Teacher (my 28 days a month job) I am intrigued by the technology.

For all these reasons, I'd much rather have the Prius.
