Their intention is not to create a sound argument based on evidence. Their intention is to create a feel-good position for people who want to reject evidence in favor of the lunacy of religion. When creationists debate scientists, their target is not the scientist, but the scientifically-illiterate public who does not understand the arguments on either side, but simply needs to feel that an argument is being made. This is critical to understand: They don't CARE that their arguments are bullshit. They are simply giving people who WANT to believe in religion the feeling that there is an argument out there.

And they are being successful. Politicians who have spoken honestly about AGW have lost their elections. And the Republicans are now starting a witch hunt directed against scientists. And once they have silenced the scientists, their next step will be to overthrow the freedom of religion and make it a crime to not be a Christian.

I love you, Jocko! Only, wouldn't everybody have to be the same denomination of Christian? Different Christian sects hate each other as much as they hate Muslims or Wiccans.

I usually focus on pre-European colonization of the Americas. So that puts me at about 200yrs ago roughly. :) I really like the Pleistocene though!

Plastiscene was my favourite, too. You can do anything with that stuff. :D

Although, having been born into the Electronic Age, I doubt I'd be happy anywhen else. ;)

Christians did not stop burning people at the stake until their political power diminished to the point that they could no longer get away with it. Every time clerics come to political power, the result is oppression and brutality. From the beginning of history until today.

My blood pressure is actually excellent. I attribute this to a diet of vegetarian plus fish, regular exercise, not owning a TV, and always speaking my mind rather than letting my anger at the stupidity of the world fester inside me. :D

Of course, I could die in a fiery plane crash, or fall off a mountain, or drown while trying to freedive to 100 feet, or be eaten by a bear, or killed when an SUV driven by a cell-phone-texting idiot plows into my three-legged clown car... but I do exercise reasonable precaution, so it's more likely I'll end up being lynched by a pack of rabid bible-thumpers, angry at me because I believe in evolution. (The Pentecostal chaplain at FCI Sandstone told me I was going to hell for believing in evolution. He was extremely angry about it. He said I might be forgiven for being an atheist, god being merciful and all that, but never for believing in evolution. )

    An old joke:

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing
on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said "Stop!
    don't do it!"

    "Why shouldn't I?" he said.

I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!"

    He said, "Like what?"

I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?"

    He said, "Religious."

I said, "Me too! Are you christian or buddhist?"

    He said,"Christian."

I said, "Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?"

    He said, "Protestant."

I said, "Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?"

    He said, "Baptist!"

I said,"Wow! Me too! Are you baptist church of god or
    baptist church of the lord?"

He said, "Baptist church of god!"

I said, "Me too! Are you original baptist church of god,
or are you reformed baptist church of god?"

He said,"Reformed Baptist church of god!"

I said, "Me too! Are you reformed baptist church of god,
reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god,
    reformation of 1915?"

He said, "Reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!"

I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off.

I am skeptical of this number. The link provides no information. But if it's true, I suspect they are killed by other Christians, or else killed while trying to kill others. Note that crusaders who died while killing Muslims were considered "martyrs"!

I suspect that that chaplain would have some angry words for you, for disagreeing with his dogma that believing in evolution is an unpardonable sin. :D

In the peace movement, especially the nonviolent civil disobedience* segment of it, there are a lot of radical Christians. When I was in prison, more than one of these folks told me I was more Christian than most Christians. I actually found that comment offensive, but I understood it to be well-intentioned, and only shared my feelings about it with close friends who would not be offended by my reaction to their well-meaning comment.

(I always used the term "civil disobedience" because I was acting in disobedience of the existing civil authority. Within the movement, the term "civil resistance" is more popular, since many, especially the faith-based, feel that they are OBEYING a higher power, rather than "disobeying." One friend of mine uses the term civil resistance because he feels that domestic laws that protect WMDs are themselves in violation of international law, therefore he is obeying the law. I don't get hung up on the terminology. I felt I was breaking the law to protest far greater crimes, and in the spirit of Ghandi and King, I always showed respect for the Air Force guards and cops who arrested me, and I never participated in any protest that put anyone other than myself and my fellow protesters in any danger. The one time I actually had a trial in federal court, and therefore was given copies of the Air Force reports, those reports all referred to me as acting respectfully.)

I guess there's no way I can PROVE to anyone over the internet that my accounts are accurate without posting personal identifying information about myself, and I choose not to do that. I know that some of what I say makes some people angry, and I suppose this board is read by a lot of people who never post, some of whom may be unstable. I suppose someone who really wanted to find me could do so, but I'm not going to make it easy. So you can accept my accounts or not, as you like.

I got restricted to the base for several days and given extra duty at two different duty stations while I was in the USAF in the 1960s because I wouldn't put the name of a proper christian religion on my personnel records.

Wow! That's nasty. And probably unconstitutional. And probably even against the AF's own rules.

But it's not at all surprising.

I claimed conscientious objector status at around that time, and was denied by my local draft board (from which, as far as I knew, there was no appeal) on the grounds that I did not belong to one of the very few Christian denominations officially recognized by the military as being "legitimate" conscientious objectors. (I was ready after that to pack my bags for Canada, but in the end was not drafted.)
