"The rich are different from you and me; they get to hit and run, almost killing a cyclist, but get off without serious charges because it is hard to be money manager for Smith Barney if you have a record. District Attorney Mark Hurlbert is not charging Martin Joel Erzinger with a felony, because "Felony convictions have some pretty serious job implications for someone in Mr. Erzinger's profession," which is managing billions for rich people.
Dr. Steven Milo, the victim, is not impressed. " Rich Vail Fund Manager Hits Cyclist And Runs, Gets Off Because Charges Might "Jeopardize His Job" : TreeHugger

Our country has always been run by the rich, for the rich. It's usually not this blatant, but this is really no different from the way law enforcement is conducted on a daily basis.

This is contemptible and disgusting, but it's not unusual.

Meanwhile, DWB (driving while black) can get you pulled over for no reason, beaten, and then thrown in jail to cover the cops for having beaten you. And our prisons are stuffed to the gills with people whose only "crime" is being poor. Probably 5% of U.S. prison inmates have actually done something to hurt someone.

+100000000000000, but I'm somewhat convinced that you may not have that kind of sentiment had you not experienced it yourself.

Oh, I've always known that our "justice" system is a farce. Spending six months on the inside merely showed me what a huge majority of prison inmates (at least in the federal system) and jail inmates (in the few jails I've been in) are no more "dangerous" than the people reading this post.

The punishment should fit the crime. Mr. Erzinger should be tied down, face up, on a local bicycle path for a day or two.

At Least OJ Simpson went through the trouble of pretending to have a trial.

And having to spend his own money. This is what I don't like about CEOs/fund managers. They get way too much in options and benefits, and then their companies actually flip the bill for legal bills. Are they really that valuable??

US Law is set on precedent. Now we have two. Reagan stating "I can't remember" hundreds of times to court questioning about arms-for-drugs aka Iran-Contra, and now this guy "A felony could ruin my day/job" or what ever. All I need now is a crime to commit and I'm OFF!!!! by precedent, no less!!!!

didnt read the article because i already know that money runs this country. how would this be any different than a rich kid getting off on some rape charge because his daddy can afford to hire a high priced attorney who is literally good enough to run circles around the DA?

Daniel, I know what you are trying to say, but I don't think this is helping your point. I've met some of the people from PC.

Re: Rich Vail Fund Manager Hits Cyclist And Runs, Gets Off Because Charges Might "Jeopardize His Job

That IS my point! Except for being poor, our prison population is statistically no more dangerous or harmful than the population at large. If we just had a lottery, and if your number is drawn you go to prison, it would be no different at all, except that the prison population would not be 99% poor folks.

Yes, there are some nasties in prison. And as a percentage, there are the same number of equally-nasties outside of prison. Actually, the MOST dangerous people are in government, big business, and the military, so if we eliminated the "justice" system and filled our prisons with a random lottery, we'd be BETTER OFF, as long as congresscritters and military officers were not exempt.

My point was that PC contains a particularly large concentration of crazy and nasty people - much larger than that found in prison. I was only joking, although now that I think about it...

Yeah, but Congress has a higher percentage of crazies and nasties than even Prius Chat. :(
