GE says it will buy 25,000 electric vehicles by 2015 in hopes of sparking demand for the emerging market for which it makes charging stations and other infrastructure.

This is the first time I've seen a target date. Previously, they simply committed.

Yuck. GE and GM both need to blow up but Obomo would NEVER let that happen.

If you compare GE to GM then you don't know what you're talking about. GE is world renowned for quality. What do you think is keeping many of the world's jets aloft:

That's right. You'd DEFINATELY know if their products were on par with GM. It simply aint so.

So if GE considers the Volt to be an 'electric' vehicle...does that mean that my beloved Gen III Prius is also electric?!? :mod:

I'd say so. You are the proud owner of a switchable electric vehicle with a 1 mile range and a petrol powered 'range expander'.

Hahaha, you can tallk about jet engines all you want, you live in a shell.

Obomo gave GE $25 million in taxpayer money which will go towards purchasing cars from another 20-billion dollar bailed out company, named GM.

Well if that's the case, then GE can forget about the Volt and get twice as many Prii for their fleet! More bang for their GE buck!!! ;)

Have you tried to make it a mile in ev mode? I think it can only be done when warmed up, going under 25 mph, on a tuesday, with a slight down hill, and a month that doesn't end in R during a full moon. I could be wrong.

The reinvestment acts of 2007-2009 considered PHEVs PH electric vehicals. I would say 25-50 mile ev range should qualify enough for government work. On the prius, I can't make it a bloc in ev mode before its warmed up.

I'm assuming GE will be leasing these for about $300/mo.

I wonder who got the other 13,000.

I would think more people would be happy that a large corporation is helping create demand for vehicles that help progress the world further away from oil dependence.

This just announced: After reading a thread on a website called PriusChat, GE CEO has cancelled his order. GM now says the Volt may not be viable. Nissan then announced that in the absence of competition, it won't need to improve upon the Leaf for at least another decade. Toyota announced the plug-in Prius will likely remain only 13 miles EV only for the next ten years due to lack of competition. ---Is that what you guys want???

Actually, I'm quite happy that this is happening. I'm just having a little fun with all the articles I've read about this today. Most of them only mention Electric Vehicles & GM Volt and no one else. I guess the Nissan Leaf doesn't qualify as an electric vehicle. Or the Coda. Or Tesla...or...

On on serious note, this is great news. The problem I have though is the simple fact that they mention the Volt as an electric vehicle, when people know that it is not 'purely' electric. It's been over 10 years that Prius' has been on the road, and I still have people coming up to me and asking where I 'plug in' the car to charge. If all this time has passed and the general public doesn't know what a hybrid is, then calling a hybrid an 'electric vehicle' is going to confuse folks even more.
