The problem with this ad campaign is true greenies aren't going to own a car at all.

I suppose there are a bunch of hipsters with money that would normally buy Audi A3s or Mini Coopers. I'm not sure a lexus would be, pardon my expression, "douchey" enough for this crowd.

I guess lexus is trying hard to change their image from accountantmobile to doucheymobile. Seems like they are trying too hard, though.

    warning: cringe inducing ads ahead

Define hipster. Also, try to define it in the true sense, as in, " how does said definition exclude everyone who is not a hipster, and solely include those who are"

Everyone that drives a Lexus in SF is an accountant? Here in Socal (from LA to SD), people from all walks of life drive Lexuses, and there are a lot of them on the roads down here.

And down here, thousands of "hipsters" drive IS Lexuses. It's real popular with them down here.

it's a middle/upper middle class urban subculture of people in their 20s...

I like this definition from wikipedia:

basically all style no substance combined with smugness.

I'm trying hard to think of everyone I've ever known in SF and Silly Valley that has owned a lexus - friends, people at present and former employers, etc.

    admin assistants
    HR
    accountants.

Also, accounts seem to love harleys, too.

*im not speaking to anyone in particular with the term "you"
*im not emotionally tied to this, i just felt like talking.....

while, i agree that this description sounds like a terrible person to be around, I think the term gets bandied around as a catch-all for something that, according to the very definition you offer, is rather elusive.

how does one attribute "smug" based on appearance? how does one define unsubstantiated style by looks alone? the real answer is, while we'd like to think we can, but....well, you can't. you could, but the degree of accuracy falls into about the "all Muslims are terrorists" range (this is not a political statement, simply the first example that came to me).

my disdain for the term "hipster" is this:
-it's a catch all insult used by people who want to be considered as credible members of some group (society, sub-culture, etc.) aimed at people who society may recognize as being part of "your group" but who you, personally, do not feel have earned membership. my question to anyone who feels this way is "yeah? and just who are you?"

-the style sans substance thing just doesn't hold up under scrutiny either.
what are you wearing? taking "style" out of clothing means we're all wearing potato sacks. so if we're all subject to some sort of style, we're all accountable for substance....so why do you wear what you wear?
common answers might include "its comfortable" or "i like the way it looks". if a so-called hipster were to respond the same, would you accept the explanation?

it's like this backwards smug dismissal. most everyone ive heard using the hipster pejorative are themselves in a way smug; elitism expressed by accusing others of being elitist.

do not know why i felt like writing this much about it. i just hear the word often spat out venomously, and i suppose as an insult it should be, but the definition never really holds up. to be honest, it comes off as insecurity of the user more than it makes me think less of the hipster.

PS. lest we forget, most of us here drive a prius and are all too familiar with having to defend the decision for essentially the same arguments made against the hipster.

    haha, maybe.

while they seem like they're harming nobody sitting around, drinking their Ritual Roasters coffee and riding their fixie bikes, I do have one gripe - their transient nature tends to drive up rents in places and destroy neighborhoods.

the mission in SF is infested with them.

anyway, I don't think they'll be trading their fixies for Lexi anytime soon.

Man im so with you there. Gentrification is a plague.

Ps what's wrong with riding a brakeless bike on a city street? /sarcasm. Actually fixed gears are pretty fun to ride, but that's the athlete in me, not the me that enjoys safety and comfort

So... what's the difference btwn hipsters and yuppies??

I applaud Lexus for trying to make this vehicle cool (and really, if it wasn't for the powertrain, would it not be just another entry-level luxury hatchback like the A3?). I find it hard that the well earning businessman would drive a CT. They would rather have an ES or GS (or LS if they're up there). A sedan.

If it's true this car is supposed to be an entry level Lexus, then targeting young people with money and a trendy bent would seem to be the correct marketing move. I watched a couple of the videos at the website and didn't find them obnoxious. "Hipster" seems to imply a poser or someone who's trying too hard to be hip and cool. The people they are using seem like smart accomplished people who don't give off a smug or cooler than thou vibe, at least no more that the typical young person.

Not sure how useful or effective this campaign is, but at least they aren't doing cheesy live action cartoons like for the Prius! :D

FWIW, I'm interested in this car only because it appears to pretty much be like a small Prius, but with a much better suspension and damping system, and a HD based nav. It would be crazy for me to change cars at this early date, but on the other hand, there are days when I'd love a smoother ride. I also suspect I would get about the same mileage I get with the Prius (due to short trips).
