Soldering inside the harness adapter leads to the compact install without any external connection. If you decide to return back the OEM HU you simply unplug/remove the harness adapter.

But the Rosen doesn't require/use a harness adapter, at least the Prius specific model.

Fraychild, where did you ground the brake wire? I'm getting ready to install a Rosen Nav in my wife's car and this blue e brake wire has had me hung up on what to do with it. Don't want to connect this to the e brake but now that I have found that this can just be grounded, I'm ready to install it. Haven't seen inside the dash but I'm wondering if this wire can be grounded with one of the screws that hold the unit in place.

Your write up with photos is great and has been very helpful.

2 questions...I plan on getting this model and having my uncle help me install....What do I do with the brake wire...

    and
i already have the iPod interface kit installed can I just use that and plug it in to the Rosen unit or do I have to use the one it comes with?

Is it really really that easy to install?

    sorry three questions!

While you are in there - remove the ipod kit, and sell it on Ebay...

How does the "mode" steering wheel button function with this HU?

And am I right to assume the right hand steering wheel controls are unaffected?

    Thanks!!

Afterthought: how is the navigation? Can you compare it to TomTom/Garmin standalone units?

After the afterthought thought: Does this charge an iPhone with the iPod kit without the annoying "this accessory is not optimized for iPhone" warning?

The "Mode" on the steering wheel switches between sources -

The Navigation is great - It's really accurate, some few things that could use improvement are minor... like the street names are a lil' small in 2D view... or the position Arrow is too large (IMO) in the 3D view... really minor stuff... Or ROSEN should've allowed the unit's NAV button to be a "MAP" button as well... (can you tell this bohers me??) :) Otherwise, it's navigation is great!

The unit uses its own iPod wire... unless you wanna mess around with the wiring and figure out how to make them work together, I'd sell the interface kit you have installed...

The message comes but the it charges my iPod, my iPhone 3G and my wife's 3GS no problem.

Quick question... does anyone have or know where I could get the schematics/diagram or color code for the Prius's Factory Radio Wire Harnesses?? I just wanna locate the POWER, ACC, and GROUND wires...

Everything about the nav can be customized (you should even be able to replace the arrow with a little car of your choice) - just depends on version and maker of nav.

Do a search on gps underground. There are many mods (even changing TTS voices)...

    Thanks, Fraychild, you rock.

Just a couple other stupid questions, if you guys don't mind me asking. Do nav directions (voice prompts) continue while you're browsing another source, i.e. if I'm going through my iPod folders will it still tell me to turn?

And related, does music/etc continue playing while viewing a map with voice directions?

Does bluetooth sync with the iPhone phonebook? And is the mic quality acceptable at highway speeds?

    Two more...

The factory installed AUX still works, right?

And can I grab a Toyota factory backup camera off eBay and hook it up, or does it require a specific camera? (the eBay seller has one for $115, but that sounds expensive)

Thanks again! (hopefully this helps some other people out too)

EDIT: Ooh, one more. Does the Bluetooth work with steering wheel controls? It's possible with A2DP, but I would be surprised if that was built-in. If it's there, I'll be pretty excited.

The Ebay cameras for 'Camry' plug into the existing hole - I used a bit of hotmelt to hold it there - but they work great (day / night), and some have distance lines to show how far you are away from an object.

Did you use an install guide or just figure it out yourself? I searched around the other day and couldn't find a 2010 guide to installing the backup camera. Thanks.

EDIT: Hmm... looked at cameras on eBay and they're talking about connecting to the license plate lights and soldering wires... is there not just one wire that goes from the camera to the stereo that handles everything?

Some more pics that I managed to get for the curious minds...

Where I ran the USB wire around/under the shifter and into the armrest/center console:

Where I have it connected - Take out this screw around the shifter metal plate and wrap the wire around it:

To answer some of the questions,

Yes there is audio/music playback while viewing the Navigation.

No the Bluetooth doesn't sync with phonebook, only your Missed/Received/Made calls - The Mic is pretty good, you may need to lean forward a bit OR speak a bit louder, but reception is nice and clear.

The Factory installed AUX is no longer valid...

I don't have the backup camera (yet) so I don't know yet if it needs to be specific...

    Hope this helps...

Am I understanding correctly that the difference between a 'Prius' package and a generic one is the harness adapter only ? Makes we wonder if the adapter can be bought separately for less money.

meaning u can control it while driving and not in park right? -______-
can u just cut the brake wire?

Bathinazn, in order to watch videos in motion with any after market HU the E brake wire must be grounded. By "mounting" it, it will be permanently grounded, therefore the HU thinks the E break is on constantly therefore the HU will play dvds while in motion.

Navigation works whether or not the E-break wire is grounded or not.

I placed a bid on this product for 950, hopefully i'll get a response back soon.

    Thanks so much fraychild

    Last Question hopefully...

Can you play videos off your ipod?

So how would I go about using an AUX connection? There isn't AUX built-in to this HU, right? Just wondering how to play my XM portable through the car.
